KB there are so many little subtle jokes in every scene. You will tune into them soon I’m sure. Like the scene with the Captains funeral ‘let’s show some respect for the Captain’ .. then puts his pint on the coffin, then after the war hero story it’s not just the fruit machine, it’s a ‘Das Boot’ machine which was a war film, and it hit the jackpot with three German flags. The best thing is, it really is like the old local clubs, the attention to detail is outstanding.

The 'British Comdy Guide' website, giving 'did you know' facts about the series. states that "for all the live performances that took place in the club, from Talent Trek to Half A Shilling's controversial folk song, all the audience reactions were genuine. The crowds were largely made up of club regulars and genuine people who thought it was a real show. They were not given any prior warning about what they were about to watch. The cast and crew would film close-ups of the acts in the daytime, and then would turn the cameras on the real audience in the evening in order to get very natural reactions." This explains their 'normal people' attitudes and reactions!

You were close when you said about the U.S Civil War. It wasn’t about your Civil War, it was about OUR English Civil War between The House of Lancaster (Lancashire) & the House of York (Yorkshire). With him (Peter Kay) playing other parts is a thing called That Peter Kay Thing, Pheonix Nights is like an extended version of the episode of that called The Club I think it was called and a character he played in another episode think was Eyes Down about someone Peter Kay was playing working in a Bingo Hall (I think as he had all those jobs and did various things, or witnessed some types of people) where he plays a man called Keith Lard who's also in this lol. When in Eyes Down he's slagging off Keith Lard "Hey keith, ya weirdo, dogtanian" kills me laughing!!! 😂😂

Peter Kay plays Max the bouncer and Paddy McGuinness plays Paddy. There is a spin off series called Max and Paddy's Road To Nowhere where they tour around the UK in a campervan getting into all sorts of trouble. I'm sure you will find this funny, check the series out.

We did have a Civil War in the UK, back in the mid 1600's. In fact, we had 3 of them between 1642 and 1651. The end result was that the Parliamentarians won and had the king, Charles 1, executed. But, 11 years later, everyone shook hands and had Charles' son, Charles 2, put on the throne. We also had a civil war between the Houses of Lancaster and York in the 1400's - and the trouble between the cowboys of Lancashire and the cowboys of Yorkshire in Phoenix Nights is true enough, as the two counties are renowned for their rivalry at everything, especially cricket.

Did you know they have them down south too? I always thought these clubs was a northern thing, until I moved down there for a couple of years, and because they were affiliated to the ones I was a member of back up north, I got automatic membership and could pay my subs and just sign in without making a new membership. Surprisingly they are identical to the ones up here, only with more cockney accents floating about. Also, I've never seen 6 or 7 club members go up on stage and shag the strippers act after they finished like at a do we had, definately not seen that up north before. Everything else is the same though, even the drink prices were what we paid back home. That surprised me because everything else down there was expensive. You needed a mortgage to go out for a pizza down there.

@@JohnDuffy-bq8wg we used to win the meat raffle every week -nit the actual club one, but there was a guywhoc came in Dagenham trades hall who worked at Smithfield meat market used to come in, and if you gave him £50 he would fill your freezer up for a year! He assured us it came from legitimate sources, but if it did, I don't know how he did it. I once got 10kg of bacon, about the same again in sausages, 5kg rib eye steak, 10 top steaks, bags of pork chops, lamb chops, 5 legs of lamb, carrier bags full of breasts of lamb, about 40 of them, 2 tomahawk steaks 5 chickens and a few other bags full of belly pork and similar, and I think it cost me under £80. It seemed to be pot luck what you got, but that did keep our family going on meat for about a year, and it was at a time we were up §hit street as myself and my girlfriend, now wife, had been laid off work. He used to supply the meat raffle sometimes at the trades hall, and he also dropped a giant turkey and a bag of sausage meat and a load of veg off to our house at Xmas, all for gratis and a cup of tea. He knew we were struggling and just wanted to make sure we were ok.top bloke. There was a lot of people like that who went in there. I do miss going in there to be honest.

I work in Preston, Lancashire. We actually walked past Peter Kay and Paddy McGuiness on the traffic crossing next to my old office whilst we were on our way to lunch, all we did was nod at them and say "alrite"or "owdo" (very Lancashire/Yorkshire greetings) and get away as fast as possible, not going to bother someone by asking for an autograph. They were filming something in Preston. It was kind of bizarre as you don't expect to see "famous" people in Preston.

Hey Boomer, I work at Lancaster University. Every year there is a three day sports event called The Roses, Lancaster Uni v York Uni. This years event has literally just happened (3rd/4th/5th of May), Lancaster won :). It represents The War of the Roses, an English Civil War in 1455 to 1487. One of the battles (The battle of Bosworth) saw King Richard the 3rd killed on the battle field, ending the Lancastrian Royal Lineage of The Plantagenet allowing the Tudor bloodline to become the new Royal Lineage. Lancaster's coat of arms has a red rose in the centre and York's has a white rose.

The thing is though, it was never actually between Yorkshire and Lancashire. It was between two rival factions of very high ranking nobles, to decide who was going to influence a very weak and mentally un stable king. Most of the Lancastrian forces were recruited from Wales the north of England and some Scottish, Most Yorkist forces from London and the midlands. Where I live, I have Pontefract six miles to the East, Pontefract castle was a Lancastrian stronghold, six miles to the west is Wakefield with a Large Yorkist castle at Sandal. Also it wasn't named the Wars of the roses whilst it was occurring, that was down to Shakespeare.

I prefer his acting roles to his stand up- his stand up is very conventional, nothing wrong with that, but, personally I like stand up more edgy. Pheonix Nights is just so well done, I've only been to a "chicken in a basket cabaret" club a couple of times but I think he gets the vibe perfect, it seems like he's taking the piss but with fondness for those type of clubs.

One of the best things about Phoenix Nights, is that Peter Kay used a real working mens club to film most of it. And when there were scenes like the acts and bingo hoover going on, the people who are filmed laughing or looking shocked were actual members of the club and the reactions were 100% genuine. Genius

We had working men’s club up the road from us and it was exactly the same as this. We also had an old WW2 veteran working the door collecting members subs. What you see here is exactly what you used to get. Every character you see is recognisable in most working men’s club, from the women who worked the kitchens to the old boy who collected members subs, to the crap talent that used to appear, the bloke who owned etc, etc.

The older people who are the audience aren't actors. They are members of that club used for filming and are never told what's going to happen so all their reactions are real. Also listen out for Kenny in future episodes. He's the worlds biggest liar. Sometimes as well you have to read some of the signs in the background as they are hilarious. Plus the music sometimes being used relates to what is happening on screen and makes the scenes even funnier. But you will notice all these things as you get further into the series.

Phoenix Nights lead character Brian Potter was originally written for Bernard Manning, says Peter Kay. Comedian Peter Kay has said that he wrote his Phoenix Nights lead character for controversial stand-up Bernard Manning. Kay was speaking to BBC Radio Manchester about his Channel 4 sitcom set in a working men's club when he made the surprising admission that he had been hoping to cast Manning, known for his racist and sexist jokes, in the main role of abrasive club boss Brian Potter. However, Manning, who died in 2007, became ill before Kay was able to sign him up, and so he ended up starring in the role he had written himself. Kay told the station's Ted Robbins: "Bernard Manning is controversial but he had incredible timing. "I wrote the character of Brian Potter in Phoenix Nights for him to play but unfortunately he was too poorly to do it. I thought it would have been perfect casting but it didn't happen."

Yorkshire and Lancashire are neighbouring counties (not towns). The Wars of the Roses were a series of civil wars fought over control of the English throne from 1455 to 1487. The term "Wars of the Roses" was not used at the time (1455 - 1485). If it had a name, it would have been The Cousins' War. Pedantic, perhaps, but when teaching an American about history, it's best to be precise. Or you could call it The Battle of Bunker Hill (when it took place at Breed's Hill).
