I'm 42, I was walking to school by myself by the age of 8 and back then 95% of kids made their own way to school (either by bike or on foot). I still walk past my old school sometimes an Al's right, now 95% of kids are being chauffeured in like celebrities

Britain is becoming afraid of it's own shadow. We'll be like the Americans soon. I'm an Expat living in Sweden and work in a school. Pretty much every kid here either walks or cycles to school. The only reason a kid would get driven here is if their parent was passing.

@@ecj6082 Can I ask where your kidnapping rate figure comes from? Don't remember it ever being rife in my day. I went to three schools with about 2000 kids and not one ever got kidnapped. Besides, nowadays we have grooming gangs and online predators who have no need to snatch kids off the streets and they walk home from school

The Black death (The Bubonic plague) is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which is carried by two vectors, that being the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the fleas that feed off of it. Both the fleas and the rats bit people which then spread the disease. This was not helped as there huge amounts of squalor, and due to the fact that the church had put a death sentence on all cats a couple of years before. This meant that there were few cats around to hunt the rats, causing an acceleration in the diseases spread. It got worse after it mutated into pneumonic plague, as this meant that the disease could be spread from person to person Myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) has a suite of symptoms mainly around tiredness , but can also cause joint pain, headaches or tachycardia (irregular heartbeat) and is caused by either viral infections, such as glandular fever bacterial infections, such as pneumonia problems with the immune system a hormone imbalance genetics - ME/CFS seems to be more common in some families

In 1665 - 1666 the Great Plague struck England. It brought devastation in London, then spread across the country. Hepworth near Holmfirth West Yorkshire was the most northerly point that it reached. According to local legend it is supposed to have come in on cloth brought from London. In an effort to save the village the residents split the village into two parts at Barracks Fold. Those that were infected remained, isolated from the world, in one half. Thirteen of the residents died from the disease, which was a considerable percentage of the population in such a small village and thirteen trees were planted to remember them. The trees still stand today, by the local football pitch. Two subsequently fell down and in 2004, replacements.

I thought it was Eyam that the plague got to from cloth from London? My ancestors lived there during that time, the caught the plague but didn’t die from it, they actually survived due to a genetic mutation that only 10% of white people in the whole world have and it only accrues in them.

Could be wrong but I think the posies were worn for the pleasant smell as the thinking was at the time that the plague was or could be spread by 'fowl odours' or vapours and they thought the sweet smelling posies countered or over came them. I wonder if they would have held them to their noses when they could smell the death or were in areas of infected almost like a surgical mask but 'filtering' smells rather than particles like a modern mask

Love Al Murray and glad you enjoyed his British sense of humour. Did you know he's also an accomplished historian? He's done a few series here on UK TV regarding WW2. M. E. is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, an illness that leaves you chronically tired. It surfaced in the 90's, I think. Anyway, you enjoy. Glad you get fun from British humour. It's unique. Don't forget it's in the name, it's GREAT Britain

Read "The Black Death" (1969) by Philip Zeigler. It's almost certainly one of Al Murray's sources for that part of this show. It's also bloody shocking. Between a quarter and a third (some studies indicate more than that) of the entire population of 14th Century Europe was killed by this (genuine) pandemic. If the same rate of attrition had happened with that recent little flu thing, 200 million people (out of 500 million) would have died in Europe. Britain, which suffered far worse than other European countries from the plague for some reason, would have lost the modern equivalent of 30+ million people on its own - that's nearly half the entire population. As I said, though, there are studies that suggest the death rate in 14th Century Britain was even worse than that. Puts bloody Covid in its place, that's for sure.

My grandmother (born 1892) talked of her aunt who used to save uneaten bread. That’s what they did in he 19th century. And she used to rub mouldy green bread onto the wounds of wounded relatives (children, mostly). I’ve often thought that the knowledge of that “old wives’ tale” was what prompted the scientific discovery. 🤔

When penicillin was being developed, they wanted to find the strain of mould which was most efficient at producing it - which could have come from just about anything mouldy, since penicillium fungi are extremely common. But the one actually selected for commercial production came from a mouldy cantaloupe melon found at a supermarket.

Hey KB your favourite Leeds nutter here!!! Ive been banging on in previous links for you to react to Brassic. I have been watching the 3 previous series' and will be treating myself on Christmas Day to the recently released 4th. I have to say, I dont think it will be suitable to react to because there is a lot of bad language in it and references. That said, the humour is akin to the Inbetweeners although a bit more dark in certain aspects that address mental health and some complicated love connections. The characters are amazing though. And the flow of humour is non stop so even when the dark moments happen, its not long before they are back on form. The favourite characters for me arent even part of the gang!! The farmer is piss funny and the doctor (GP) just as much! I hope you and your lovely Queen give it a bash and get back to me on your thoughts. Im sure you will love it By the way, about a week ago I received a PM "from you" saying I had won a prize so yeah they are still around

You're correct! It was the flees, who bit rats and then jumped to humans who were bitten. But also rats who had the plaque and bit humans. The Black Death resulted in 1/3 of the European population to die. Strange thing was that after this pestilence, the survivors got a better life. Farmers etc. where paid more by the nobles to tend their lands. The common folk suffered dearly, but the ones who stayed alive got a better life.

The weird thing about Great Britain is that it is not promoting our best profile. "Great" Britain is simply the largest island on the peninsula. It's also the reason why the full name of the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, because the land mass of the Emerald Isle is lesser.

Curiously it was thought that the stray dogs and cats would spread the black death, bubonic plaque (buboes). A bounty was paid for each dead stray, the rat infestation would have been more controlled had the strays been allowed to do what they normally do. Once the plague fleas infected humans, the humans, through coughing changed the symptoms to the more infectious disease, pneumonic plague.

Murray has done some serious documentary work (historical of course) He's written at least a dozen books. His latest and probably his most serious is this one Command: How the Allies Learned to Win the Second World War (Hardback)zoom Command: How the Allies Learned to Win the Second World War (Hardback) Al Murray (author) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★1 Revie I understand, through a secret poorly kept, that I have this one waiting for me under the tree in a couple of days. Looking forward to it and the bottle of mead I'm going to consume whilst reading the opening chapters.

There are three more of Al's videos you have yet to do that are very overdue on your part. Al Murray - National Anthems, All Murry - All Jobs are Terrible and lastly but far from least, Al Murray - Every Parent Must Watch This.

There's some audience participation in his piece on the financial crisis of 2008-ish. Well worth watching and reacting (to). kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHWTdaywab2EftU
