Neil Morrissey was the original voice of Bob The Builder. That children's TV character popular a few years back. So the impression was spot on to me anyway. He did a show called Men Behaving Badly which originally starred Harry Enfield as the flatmate with Martin Clunes. Neil replaced Harry when he left the show early on. Although that's probably why you see Men Behaving Badly actors like Martin Clunes in some Harry Enfield show sketches. Along with the woman who plays Clunes love interest in the show.

The joke about the "Morrissey autobiography" was that Morrissey, the lead singer of the Smiths (now with a somewhat tarnished reputation as a supporter of far-right politics), had recently released his autobiography and it was being lauded left and right in the press as being very well-written and important in the history of one of the greatest UK bands ever. When Peter Serafinowicz introduced it, people were expecting the autobiography of Morrissey the singer, but instead he pulled out the autobiography of Neil Morrissey, a much less serious person, comedy actor, and he absolutely nails the impression.
@jasperdevries17264 ай бұрын
Not that Morrisseys reputation was entirely stirling before, but I agree he managed to delve to new depths over the years.

And I'll add to this if I may - Peter does an amazing impression of Morrissey and started reading/singing his actual autobiography to the music of The Smiths. He stopped at page 2, but it's eerie how spot on it is. It's on Peter's official channel.

@SirHilaryManfat4 ай бұрын
@@applecorp As someone who hates Morrisey's politics and thinks he mostly speaks bollocks, I have to agree that putting a "far right" label on anyone who has alternative politics to the left, is a stupidly regressive way of going about things. There's plenty of examples of extreme "far right" politics throughout history (the most notable one coming from Austria), which aren't even close to applicable to Morrisey's views. The same goes for anyone who uses the label "far left".

Peter Serafinowicz is indeed a national treasure and his impressions are spot on. His best is, arguably, the late great Terry Wogan but Neil Morrisey was spot on! He’s never quite had the success he deserves though and often appears in other peoples shows though he did have one of his own which was kinda average. Otherwise you may have seen him as Aldo in “Spy” or the sommelier in John Wick 2 though he also appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy and will frequently appear in animated fare as a VO. He’s also played Tex in Alan Partridge (Geordie Michael’s US obsessed friend), Duane Benzie in Spaced (The awesome John Woo paintball episode) Garry in the criminally underrated and little seen World of Pub and as Ted Grundy in the “Amish Sex Pistols” skit alingside Kevin Eldon and Matt Berry. Then there’s stuff like South Park, Rick and Morty, Gravity Falls, The Simpson, Bob’s Burgers and a huge list of TV shows. If you’ve yet to see it my personal recommendation for a reaction would be Look Around You, though it’s a very niche British show that, especially with the first series, spoofed something so precise that some may leave unimpressed and/or confused. Series 2 was probably more accessible first a wider audience plus it was 30 minute episodes. Either way he’s supremely talented and deserves to be comedy royalty providing he never abdicates …

I second the "Wouldn't work in the US"-bit. Whenever we have a rather light-hearted wrestling competition, comparable to friendly games in football, we always dread doing anything with the US team.. They, for the most part, just have no chill whatsoever, even during warm-up they can't help but try to win. It's also strange talking to them, it too often just feels like a permanent pre-game stare off until the tournament is over, then they are the most friendly and talkative people you can find. 🙄

My feeling is that it's hard for you to produce shows with that kind of banter and a relaxed atmosphere, because of the main difference between UK and US humour: In the UK, a lot of humour is humble and self-deprecating, and may involve "punching up", whereas in the US it's the exact opposite; the 'funny-man' is usually grandstanding, "punching down", and laughing at his own jokes, which, I'm sorry to say, seems so childish to us. 🤷♂
