Kingdom Hearts 3 - Old and Updated Cutscenes Comparison - Main Story

NOTE: This has nothing to do with the Re Mind DLC! The new, free patch released a few hours ago added - along with new Action abilities and two new Keyblades - some graphical updates to a few of the main story cutscenes. Some of them are minimal, others are pretty evident and significant, as they actually did change the feel and the impact felt during some scenes. Effects, lenght, music and even new camera angles showing improved facial expressions of the characters have been added/adjusted.
I believe these are the only scenes which have been updated and I listed them all here, showing the differences between the old and the new ones. We're all in a hurry today and most of us, including myself, are preparing for Re Mind in a few hours.
I apologize in advance if we'll get to know of more scenes having other differences - if we do, I'll work on a second part of this comparison video.
And as usual, the Don't Think Twice music playing during the ending had to be muted for copyright reasons.

Notice how the cutscenes still have characters acting out of character or they dont make any sense if you look at other KHs? Well want that fixed? Agreed. Sorry, but the music before sucked lol. There was no build up to anything. The music didn't add to the gravity of the situation. Now it does perfectly. You can feel the weight of her shattering and feel the desperation and despair of Sora and the others. I just wish Riku and Kairi interacted more. The trio felt.... disconnected in this game I will say.

The Kairi scene was really pathetic and tried too hard to be emotional in the original. Honestly it was pretty funny like "whoops Kairi died" but now it actually feels like the stakes are high and she just ended up being Thanos'd by Xehanort just because Destati was playing. Look at the the original final form sephiroth fight in ff7 you essentially fight him in some type of sky area that's supposed to put you in awe of his power considering he just turned himself into a god in that game. Xehanort essentially did the same thing except he brought a heart shaped moon that created light. The new skybox fits the themes of what's happening way more than the very boring dark sky skybox did. Also it makes it look less like the villain is just opening a portal in the sky look as compared to superhero movies.

I love the new Daybreak sky that is created than just the end of the world version we had before. Xemnas' laser scene is a lot more impactful than the watered down version. Kairi's death is more serious and climactic. Amazing what a change in music can do. The graphical glow ups honestly make the cgs look better.

I was thinking the same thing. For me, the just grey sky really undersold the size of the moon, but the real dynamic sky kinda made me felt like it was a real cosmic object just a massive object over my head, and it's uncanny shape appearing perfectly flat above just horrifies me. I'd say this, in FFXIV ShadowBringers, light is actually seen as the enemy. In the xpac all locations are "plagued with forever lasting light" keyword is plagued. When the world is flooded with light, you're seen as the one who needs to be purged for not being just. I won't get down to the nitty-gritty, but essentially, daytime has looked constantly daunting in that game and i feel KH3 took some insight into that. Light can be scarier than darkness if one believes they're in the right despite their twisted methods.

@@soul6733 Yep. In the ending cutscene just after the final boss, Xehanort says the phrase "an empty world, pure and bright." A better translation would've been "pure and blank." Meaning it would be neither light nor dark. It would be "perfectly balanced, as all things should be."

But even if the scene was like this from the beggining, still doesnt meet Xehanorts character on past games, so Nomura would need more time to retcon this in this game to make sense, otherwise it gets inconsistent like it is now. Unfortunetly KH 3 was utterly fucked and Im not sure it will be possible to fix it.

britipinojeff Almost the whole rest of the game had cutscene specific tracks, thus making it feel like a movie at times, so it only makes sense for these final cutscenes to have some too. Very happy that they fixed that problem with this update.

Wait, it's actually a new voice for the new sections? I read that it was Christopher Lloyd on another video about the new additions, I just didn't piece together that it wasn't the same guy, and thought he just got much better at trying to do the voice. Still not perfect, but he did a much better job trying to get the voice correct. Hauer's voice was just too jarring of a difference every time Xehanort spoke.

Only thing left I have as far as aesthetics is I hate that the X-Blade just appeared. Originally I was hoping for some epic formation of it, the 13 keys forming together in some way, the last two turning to kingdom keys and clashing, something. But nah, just 'hey lemme hold up the one keyblade and poof turns into X-Blade instantly' and it really just doesn't look good at all. If only they could update that scene.

The sky and the music make this so, so much better. The sky signifies the dawn of the final clash, the dawn of a new time birthed by the following battle. Destati playing also is more thematically impactful because it signifies the beginning of the end. Props to them for making this section of the game much more impactful. :D

I like the new sky when KH is summoned. But I really miss the raining darkness. If they got rid of it because "kingdom hearts is light" or something similar, then I'd wish they had replaced it with raining light or maybe raining light and darkness. Dunno, those meteor-shower like particles just made it feel like KH's pressence was actual doing something. It also felt a bit symbolic, since it looked like a starshower, and since we learn in KH1 that stars are worlds, it feels symbolic of all the worlds "falling"

Oh, and I personally also liked the lighting on the beach at the end a little more, because it felt more like a sunset. But the new light does look better, it just doesn't have quite the feel to it that I would personally have liked

I can't seem to avoid being a bit emotional by seeing how when Kairi crystallizes the music playing is from the final world of KH1, moments before the ending reuniting them then splitting ways and most importantly promising they'll come back. It's like that fighting repeats like a cycle, it's so sad

I always thought roxas’ and Ven’s hair looked too dark. I figured maybe it was just lighting or my bad memory but I guess I wasn’t alone 😅 I think everyone looks a lot better after lightning changes

I was finishing up my critical play through today. Once I noticed these scenes my jaw dropped of excitement. To my knowledge I thought it was the keyblade update I didn't expect a cutscene update. I love them already.

One other change I noticed in the Xemnas and Axel scene is I'm sure in the original, Xemnas stood on Axel's hand when he tried to stop him from hurting Xion, but now he kicks him in the head. Admittedly, it's one case where I kind of preferred the original direction.

11:30 It's not a big deal but I did appreciate how originally Roxas' hair was shown to be just a bit darker than Ven's in this scene which I attributed to Sora with his brown hair having had somewhat of an influence on his own Nobody's appearance despite Ven's dormant Heart having been the clear primary visual influence. It wasn't dark enough to not mistake them for identical at a glance, in certain lightings like sunsets, or if you saw them individually. Also, the old game models wouldn't have shown that level of nuance so it wasn't a retcon. Oh well, what's done is done.

Theory I wouldn't put past Kingdom Hearts: the difference between Kingdom Hearts spewing darkness in one version and not in the other is actually really important. Pre and post-update are two separate world lines, and Sora went from one to the other in the ending.

Well, it is iconic. This keyblade defines the whole kingdom hearts universe. Same with oblivion and oathkeeper actually. It's also the keyblade of Roxas and Xion and two crossed kingdom keys actually make the χ-blade lol
