Kingdomino: Age of Giants Review with the Game Boy Geek

My review of the expansion for the Spiel Des Jahres (game of the year in Germany) Kingdomino titled: Kingdomino:Age of Giants. It’s designed by Bruno Cathala and published by Blue Orange Games. In this expansion, there are new goal tiles that change the way the game is scored and Giant tiles take away crowns, but you might be able to send them away to an opponent!

Do you still have to remove tiles at the beginning like you do in Kingdomino? I can't figure out how the game works with the number of tiles you end up with. Or do you just play until you have a 5x5 grid and leave the rest in the tower?

On the fence with this. I only have Queendomino and love it. Not sure if this will just add more stuff but not in a good way? That tile dispenser though...

EHngel don't take the best tile and you are safe! ;) Or you can even play the game without the giants mechanic, if you don't like the mechanic it's perfectly fine.

Same here! I ordered this expansion sight unseen and now I'm really on the fence about canceling it. I waaaaant those challenge tiles but I don't want a tray that won't fit in the Kingdomino box, and I don't want a take that mechanism.

This and queen Domino are perfectly fine, but I think anything derivative of the original kingdomino spoiled the Simplicity of the game. I'm happy that this is been such a surprise, and so many enjoy it, but for me personally, the strength of kingdomino always lied and its Simplicity. I'm surprised after winning the award blue orange invested so heavily in expansions and spin-offs. Maybe i shouldnt be. To each his own.

matthlowder I enjoy the base game more than the expansion myself. It’s so easy to teach and play that I don’t want to tell people there’s an expansion. The base has a nice small box to carry around wherever you want to go.

I agree that the strength of kingdomino was its simplicity and still being so engaging for so many people. We were excited for Queendomino, but have only played it once. I wish we would've just waited for this expansion as it's more in line with what we'd want out of "more" Kingdomino.

That magnetic box is pure luxury :) does it cause a bit more friction and roughs up the tiles?

Instead of placing out the tiles and then discarding unneeded ones during the game depending on the player count, doesn’t it make more sense to only pull out the tiles that are needed (leaving the extras in the tower)? I’m not sure why placing five and then discarding them makes sense if they’re all randomly stacked in the tower anyway. I don’t really get why this would make it more challenging. The goal tiles are an awesome addition. I’m wondering if my kids would like the ‘take that’ element or if the little bit of meanness might be too much for them?

Benjamin Spears This allows every tile you be seen so you know what is discarded. If you know the tiles well, and you see one discarded early that you might need later, you know it's gone, as opposed to not knowing if it will come out or not.

Benjamin Spears it makes it more challenging because in the base game toy get to see all the dominoes, and the one(s) not chosen are discarded. In the expansion dominoes are discarded before the choices, so the one yiu needed might get discarded before you get a chance to choose it.

Also it increases the chance of the new tiles showing up, they never get discarded. Plus they always show up, no matter the player count.

Those footstep cards really makes an interesting dynamic mechanism. I wonder how they came up with it

I don't know, the giants feel like a 'threat' that ruins the peaceful atmosphere I get while playing the base game. Also it triggers the 'gang on the leading player' by passing them the giant, which is another mechanic that disrupt the peaceful feeling you get while playing base Kingdomino.

Hm, I don't like that you have to discard tiles now. Not very elegant and I can imagine the frustration when a tile that you really want gets discarded. I'm torn because otherwise the expansion looks interesting. It adds just enough to a game I thought was a tiny bit too simple.

Actually it's better than the base game where you'd not see all the dominoes. This way you can actually see if something gets discarded that you were going for, and not hope that tile comes up later. So you get more info and can change your strategy accordingly instead of just guessing which tiles may or may not come out.

@@TheGameBoyGeeks I've only played the base game with 2 players (7x7 variant) so we didn't remove any tiles, but I get what you're saying. In the end, it probably does not make a huge difference.
