Is it safe for the bike to have a bike completely left side exposed at all times after thee install? It seems like a car without the hood. Just asking cause I want to do it

I rode my bike for months with both sides exposed I took off the side panels to have a more naked bike look..

What happened to the airbox intake you cut open. Did that actually make a difference or did you need to put the direct flow air intake on it to see horsepower gains?
