Kingman displayed a potent turn of foot as he streaked by the top-class Toronado for a thrilling success in the 2014 QIPCO Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
Taking on the older horses for the first time would prove no problem for the three-year-old as he claimed his third successive Group 1 success in the hands of James Doyle for trainer John Gosden.

Most of Kingman's races went with a pretty slow tempo, it's so impressive to win like this, held up in a slow going race and win easily at the end.

10.22 second for the antepenultian furlong is the fastest recorded furlong in the history of turf on a flat track i am aware of. Better than any furlong in battash or nature strip have ever recorded for exemple. And better than frankel 10.4 on the same race years prior.

20.75 for the final quarter-mile in a mile contest is absolutely ridiculous! I wonder how many have gone quicker, considering the ground wasn't lightening-fast..

If you watch the race again and how Kingman did not pick up immediately, Toronado might have been better of leaving his sprint till later. Toronado is a great horse as good as Dawn Approach and with the same kick. To beat him like that shows class

I think if he went to the US it would be his undoing. They go quick there early on and the track is like a road. I actually think Toronado would thrive over there, he was done by the slow ace at the start. They barely cantered it and he's by a derby winner don't forget. Kingman on the other hand has a heavily speed dominated pedigree.

Toronado barley even came near Kingman in the past two races! Kingman is the best grade 1 winner i seen like Frankel. He has it all right now. He comes from the back to the front within seconds and pulls away to win. Love his speed. He would do better in the US i been to the breeders cup a lot and i live in NY and work at Belmont Park where they hold the Belmont stakes but i rarely like horses in other country's but Kingman is proving. :)

This race was run at a crawl to get Kingman beaten, if this was American racing they would be left 15 lengths at the start & would be under pressure to get back in the race. I remember a few years back when a 66/1 won a group one race unchallenged from the front & nothing got into the race. Hail the champion Kingman you will see his last sectional time is on par with Frankel to show how good he is. Bookmakers silenced the big shrewd players who bet a few times a year are laughing all the way to the bank. Be 1/5 1 10 / next time they don't want you backing him!

@@richfairclough123 Plus if a British or Irish 1000 or 2000 Guineas winner goes on to win races like the Derby, Eclipse or Oaks then they are unlikely to drop back to a mile again after. This was as already stated a slow run race; it looked like Kingman was totally switched off, and it would obviously take a while to get a racehorse into top gear from a crawl. Once he was "switched on" Kingman did what he had to do impressively. Given the type of race it was, perhaps Kingman's jockey could have gone a bit earlier.

Can't criticize Kingman too much here, few horses could have won more convincingly coming off such a crawl.. Darwin isn't any mug either, over a mile on fast ground.. But this turnt into a sprint today, and although it took Kingman slightly longer to get into stride than I would have expected, Toronado is the 3rd best miler on the planet and got first run on Kingman, and you can clearly see Kingman was only going away from them.. so it's foolish to not think a horse a 'superstar' for onlywinning a short distance.. No one doubts Frankel after almost being done by Zoffany.. Kingman is the best horse on the planet as we speak.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 10 жыл бұрын
Lee SOG , If you rate Toronado the 3rd best turf miler on the planet, and I'm assuming you're rating Kingman the best, I'm curious who you're rating the 2nd best miler on the planet, mate? If you tell me Wise Dan then I'm gonna tell you that Variety Club must be the Rodney Dangerfield of international turf milers, getting absolutely no respect, LOL. Variety Club's connections have been saying for awhile they're targeting the BC Mile this year. That's a horse that Wise Dan will have more than his hands full with if he shows at Santa Anita, IMO.
@leesog3203
@leesog3203 10 жыл бұрын
What's up bro.. Yeah that's exactly who I meant, Variety Club.. his wins in Meydan and Sha Tin make him officially the 2nd best miler around.. and I also think he'll be too much for Wise Dan, especially after his setback.. But Kingman is way ahead of them all in my book.. he was much more value than today's 1 length victory may suggest.. despite the 8 pound advantage and pace of the race playing into his hands.. He wins with such finesse and authority, if push come to shove, he'd do a job on Toronado under any conditions.. although i'm not saying he's quite Frankel-esque.. He reminds me more of Canfford Cliffs..
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 10 жыл бұрын
Lee SOG , Funny you said that, because after Kingman won the Irish 2000 Guineas I said the same thing, that his turn of foot sort of reminded me of Canford Cliffs at his best, yet Richard Hannon compares Toronado's ability as being on par with Canford Cliffs. I think you're spot about Variety Club. He ran well Dubai, but now that he's back racing on turf again it didn't take him long at all to show what he's about in the Champions Mile.

On to form - Kingman for all his talked about speed has not won a race by 5/6L - as aforementioned those sectionals are largely attributed to the conditions which is why his opposition have been close-ish. Granted in the QA he could have won by further if produced earlier. He has only beaten Toronado by around 1.5L despite receiving the equivalent of 4L in weight from him. Personally i don't believe Toronado is as good as he was last year without his weight allowance - he hasn't trained on 8lbs worth by a long shot hence his proximity to Verazano in the QA. Until Kingman either put a horse like Toronado to the sword by 5L or produce that electric turn of foot on good ground/ good to soft and more importantly in a properly run race i will still reserve judgement on him. The fact is in the 2000 guineas he was beaten fair and square by NoT in a properly run race - a fact that people still choose to ignore. NoT was in the same group as Kingman and came from behind to beat him. You can look at this two ways. First Kingman is an unbalanced horse who clearly likes a flat track - the undulations on the Rowley mile and today at Goodwood clearly unbalance him and it takes him a while to get going. I think this definitely has some truth in it. However you cannot say that the race pace of the 2000 guineas was an irrelevant factor in him losing that race until we see him tested properly again. My hunch is he will still be too good for the rest of the G1 milers - but it would be nice to have it confirmed. An exceptional horse definitely - a superstar - not yet .... and not even close to Frankel yet for all those twitterarti saying he is!

So if you talk about how he was beaten fair and square and everyone is ignoring that then how do you explain him easily reversing the form at ascot with NoT ?

Is this the NoT Kingman trounced at Newbury and Royal Ascot? This race was a tactical masterclass by the opposition who thought the only way to win was to outmanoeuvre an horse who had won at the Curragh on heavy ground. Unfortunately Kingmans sectionals over the last two furlongs scuppered the plan.
@simonpicket7245
@simonpicket7245 10 жыл бұрын
ben white Like I have already said - the pace of the race was much slower in the St James Palace which suits his turn of foot. The 2000 guineas was more quickly run on a more testing track and his turn of foot was not as quick that day as a result.
@simonpicket7245
@simonpicket7245 10 жыл бұрын
Terry Eggett NoT had his excuses after Newbury but was beaten fairly at Ascot - trounced? it was hardly a 5L demolition but was certainly very easy. Like i have said 3 times now - both then and today the race suited him perfectly. I agree Hannon tried to take him on for a turn of foot as Toronado is a hold up horse himself - he was never going to win like that. Nobody has yet countered my point regarding the pace and the ground significantly boosting Kingmans sectionals and the fact that in the St James Palace and today the opposition were also clocking sectionals similar to Frankel - on much quicker going. Nor has anyone countered the fact that he is still to bury a top class horse by a devastating margin - NoT is no world beater and this season Toronado is not as good. He is a very good horse - but his two 'stellar' performances have come off races where the pace has been a joke! His one loss came in a race where it was run at a brisk pace and on a testing track. I want to see him cruise home off even a normal pace before i start believing his is out of this world good

@simonpicket7245

I'll state this first before people start giving me flack. Kingman is a very good horse ... however i don't think he has 'yet' proved to be the absolute superstar that all the hype is making him out to be. A horses performance can be assessed in two manners a) sectional speed and b) form. Only the former of those two is being highlighted with regard to Kingman - Much is being made of his closing sectionals at Ascot and again today - people positively hyperventilating over the fact he ran a quicker sectional than Frankel. Again i'll state for the record - Kingman has a serious turn of foot - but not Frankelesque. People are seriously overlooking the fact that today and at Ascot the ground was extremely quick. Additionally both these races were run at a total crawl - today bordered on being ridiculous. Both of these things contribute hugely to Kingmans 10.2 second furlong time. People also ignore the fact that at Ascot the 2nd and 3rd home ALSO ran quicker furlongs than Simon Rowlands could find at any distance - not just Kingman. In fact it is likely that Toronado and Darwin both hit the 10.5 s/f mark too (at least). So please can we put these sectionals into context. By contrast Frankel produced a 10.6 at Ascot in good to SOFT conditions - going for home 3f out and in a briskly run 8f race. He ran 10.45 in his second Sussex on slower ground than Kingman in a faster paced race and stuck in 2nd gear. In summary on sectionals - whilst very quick his sectionals today were hardly mind blowing given the above and this is backed up perfectly by the fact that all four horses came home in a relative bunch - meaning they were also going quickly - ground and slow pace induced.

@simon I’ve made my point above about paces but couldn’t agree more that Frankel was far, far superior. The ratings tell you as much. Kingman at 126 and Frankel 140. Admittedly Kingman retired early but still the gulf is vast. I’m pretty certain A quickening Frankel 3f out would leave the half pace Kingman suddenly treading water and subsequently gassed with no turn of foot to call on, similar to excellebration. Even Toronado quickening here got him in temporary trouble, much as the end result was amazing on the eye

Comments of the clueless... If you go a slow pace and the race develops into a sprint of course the pace setter will be close to the winner! Kingman needed to get used to the course, it is very unusual. As soon as he got to grips with it, his class showed. Very firm ground, horses weigh 500kgs and have very weak bones, bear that in mind too. I knew Kingman had better acceleration than Toronado, apparently he was still 3/1 in running at 1 point though.
@Aquarius3277
@Aquarius3277 10 жыл бұрын
I cannot understand how some people can be so blind and stupid! A 6f horse went a crawl in a 1m race to get the favourite beaten and give himself a chance! It nearly worked! How much did Toronado beat Darwin by? A head? Would that have happened if they had gone a faster pace? Obviously not! Darwin would have been beaten by at least 5 lengths by both Toronado and Kingman. Why does Kingman need to win by 5 lengths plus to prove he is top class? How many times did Sea The Stars win by 5 lengths? I think, if I remember correctly, NONE! So was Sea The Stars rubbish? A good horse in an era of poor horses? No! Sea The Stars was THE BEST by miles in his time, he was just ridden to WIN his races and that's what they are doing with Kingman too - winning races with him, distance is irrelevant! Now let's talk about Frankel! Frankel was so exceptional that he couldn't (and obviously DIDN"T) get beaten! He had races won a long way out without needing to be ridden like Kingman is to produce his outstanding burst of acceleration! Forget the times, Frankel was just so far above the rest that no one ever worried. I watched Kingman today and thought he was beaten - I never ever thought Frankel even came close to looking like he was going to be beaten, everything was just effortless! Kingman is the best 1 mile horse out there now, he is not comparable to Frankel, I don't think there will ever be a horse like Frankel again. Kingman was unlucky to have been beaten in the guineas, I think the fact that Night of Thunder drifted away from him on his way to almost slamming Australia off the track was the reason he lost the race - he had nothing to focus on and he had clearly won the race on his side of the track. The day Zoffany got close to Frankel was simply because of the same sort of thing, Frankel was out in front for a long time and had nothing to focus on - I think if Zoffany had drawn level, Frankel would have quickened again and beaten him. There are horses of a certain level of class who come along very rarely, who are so far superior to the others around them that they can literally come from anywhere and have that extra gear change that the others don't and they just win their races - Kingman seems to have that. Apart from Frankel, I would say that Zarkava and Sea The Stars had it too in recent times - watch their wins in their Arcs to view a demonstration of what I mean. I'm very impressed with Kingman, they literally tried to stitch him up and failed because he had that extra gear change and too much class. Toronado just doesn't have the acceleration to burn him off. I have no doubt that Kingman is the best miler around now and I think Olympic Glory is the next best because he has a great bit of acceleration too - it would be interesting to see if they both run in the Prix Jacques Marois. Sadly, we will have to listen to the absolutely awful commentary we get when watching these French races.
