The Sequoia Kings Canyon Rae Lakes descent from Glen Pass to Bubbs Creek may arguably be the most beautiful hike in California. After surviving days 1 and 2 of the Kings Canyon Rae Lakes loop, our adventure continued onward as we climbed the steep ascent from upper Rae Lakes to Glen Pass. Though the high altitude makes this an intense climb, you're totally rewarded at the top with insane panoramic views of Rae Lakes and the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. From there, we headed down the trail where we were lured off the loop to take an icy plunge in the gorgeous Charlotte Lake, then onwards to Vidette Meadow, Junction Meadow, and, finally, out to Road's End and Cedar Grove (where we just barely managed to escape death by mosquito). Can't wait to show you why Rae Lakes is one of the best hikes in California!
ABOUT US:
We’re Adam and Elise, a couple who believes that adventure is the best therapy. We’ve climbed Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro in gale-force winds, hiked Iceland’s famed Laugavegur trail in a sleet-storm, and run through Death Valley in 130 degree heat. Through it all we’ve laughed, cried, bled, bickered, and grown ever closer as a couple. Live Hard x Love Hard will inspire you to get into the wild and outside your comfort zone. Join us on our lifelong pursuit of adventure!

Oh my gosh, this video makes me smile so much. How Elise was feeling before vs. after the swim is so relatable. Literally me every day on the Appalachian Trail, but it was too cold to swim so my attitude shift usually came after a gorgeous view and a snack. 😂Adam's aversion to mosquitos and snakes is also extremely relatable. For a smile, you should check out the song "No Me Moleste Mosquito" by La Tropa Loca. It's an anthem for summertime hiking.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha yes snacks are the ultimate attitude adjuster! Elise brings jellybeans on our really tough hikes for precisely that purpose. And as for those F-ing mosquitoes, I feel it's unfair that that they "moleste" some people more than others. Maybe it's my blood type or some kind of scent thing, but if I sit outdoors with 4 other people, I'm likely to wind up with as many bites as the rest of them combined! Will def check out that song. --A

As a comparison hike of similar length (I believe), try the North Lake - South Lake loop including Lamark Col. Hi Marc, yes we've encountered several black bears. The way we handle black bears is to stay calm, speak in a firm voice, and raise our hiking poles above our head to appear large. In each of our black bear encounters, the bear just ended up going on his way without bothering us, which as we understand it is almost always what happens.

That's a really interesting question. We of course use mosquito spray (when we don't forget it!), but haven't bought bear spray yet. We've come across a few black bears, but never had any problem with them. However, when we start doing more stuff up in Montana, Canada, and Alaska we will probably get bear spray just to have some kind of defense against grizzlies in the event of an attack, because they are much more dangerous to hikers than black bears.

@@LiveHardxLoveHard We did do it as a day hike - the other people in my group did not want to backpack. They all finished before me. I was nursing a sore ankle I got doing the six-pack of peaks in So-Cal as training. The trail started out with very nice conditions but after Mirror Lake it started to get rocky on the way to Trail Camp, and then it just got even worse on the 99 switchbacks. The rockiest part was from Trail Crest to the Summit. I'm not a fast hiker to begin with and I'm in my 50's. It took me 25 hours in all to complete the RT. I was so tired by the time I finally got back to the Portal that I was hallucinating! The people starting their hikes for the summit, the day after my permit date, were already on the trail going up as I was finishing going down. Started at 2am on 08/03 and finished at 3am on 08/04. Not a single ranger checking permits that whole time. So tough, as you say, but such an amazing place - I'm pining for the Sierras all the time.

Hoping that ankle is okay, I'm sure it's hard to rest it with so much beauty out there to explore. Speaking of hiking for 25 hours... we just discovered our new favorite bingeable show on Prime, have you heard of Eco-Challenge? If you think 25 hours of hiking is long, see what these adventure racers have to do. Some of them don't sleep for five days. So yeah, it was probably hot and all but hiking without a shirt in mosquito swarms is certainly a challenging approach...no wonder he was trying to outrun them. I hate mosquito repellents but a light shirt or long sleeve rash guard soaked in permethrin is lightweight and makes them more bearable.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting about the permethrin, Dave. I will look into that! I have not found that light shirts (non-permethrined) help me at all -- the mosquitoes go right thorough them. Wearing my anorak helps a lot, but I was sweating up a storm in there. Someone needs to invent a super light, breathable shirt that mosquitoes can't penetrate -- like the shirt version of that bulletproof jacket in John Wick -- but not sure if that's possible. Would make millions, though!

@@LiveHardxLoveHard It's best to wear a loose shirt made of woven fabric for mosquito protection. The gaps in the threads of a knit fabric don't provide any protection against mossies. Yeah that pack is wack! 😂 but bear canisters really make it challenging to fit a lot in the pack. That coupled with the hot days but cold nights made it tough. But we are not usually backpackers (we would generally prefer a 26+ mile day vs breaking it up into two or more days) so we definitely have a lot to learn about ultra light, and would pack differently next time for sure :)

@@LiveHardxLoveHard hey thanks. I assumed that with your just insane adventures up and down mountains that would take me days, would translate into back packing. It was odd seeing you two breathless. Thanks so much for the effort to share it with all of us. I'm making plans for the trip from the eastern side (Kearsarge) can't wait.

Well Covid has cancelled us two summers in a row, and guy who owns the castle in France where it's supposed to happen has moved the booking back yet again to June this coming summer. Will Covid cancel it three years in a row? If so, we will give up on France and just do it here in Cali! ❤️

@@danepedersen6770 HAHA! To be honest Elise is more of the Peanut Butter Porker when we are at home, so maybe we should just dub ourselves "Pounder" and "Porker" LOL 😂 But seriously, you have no idea how jealous we are! This trail is an all time fave of ours. If you have time on your route to make it to Charlotte lake please do not miss out on it. It was one of our favorite parts of the whole trek!

@@LiveHardxLoveHard we should have plenty of time we are giving ourselves 5 days on the trail. Looks like we will have way too much time. We were thinking 10 miles a day with a flex day, maybe to take a detour. But it looks like we can get this trail done in 3 days. So we might have 2 flex days.

Oh you'll have tons of time but don't worry you will be happy to have it! We were bummed we didn't have extra time at the Rae Lakes too - you're not going to want to leave! Let us know how it goes :)
