I’ve never known what “training” for a karate match entailed of other then breaking plywood planks or hitting a heavy bag. (Not trying to be funny, I’ll take a chuckle, I’ve just been a boxing guy) It’s just my belief that martial arts, without the grappling, focuses on offense. Hence why an mma fight is only 25 min and you focus taking out your opponent hence why an mma guy feels confident against a boxer. Only as I’ve known from a brief boxing experience, a boxer has to focus his training on hitting of course, that’s easy part of training, include training not to get hit, condition to go 15 rounds, not the modern era 12 for a fight, but the 15 just for reassurance, and, you gotta prepare TO GET HIT WHILE YOU ARE GOING THROUGH THE FIRST 3 circumstances during a fight. I will say that a boxing guy hates wrestling n wouldn’t succeed as an mma guy in my opinion.

Larry Holmes was the next great boxer that was keft out of this list. How can you possibly not have him in this group. One of the greatest power jabs by any boxer. Won 21 straight title fights with 20 of then defending all comers. He beat Spinks in the rematch, but it was Spinks who was gifted the win by split decision. Spinks then was stopped in 91 seconds by Tyson. Tyson then gave the retired Holmes a crack at the belt, and even though he was stopped in the 4th round he lasted longer than Spinks did. He also went the distance against a prime Evander Holyfield trying to become champ again at 43 year's old. He then worked his way back to a title fight at 45years old against the 30 year old Oliver McCall who just knocked out Lennox Lewis. Holmes lost by a close decision. At 48 year's old Holmes last fight for a title he lost by split decision. His record was 69-6! Not sure if the Butterbean fight was held against his great accomplishments, or someone involved in making this video doesn't like Larry Holmes. Still one of the greatest in my opinion, but what do I know?

It's a dirty game, but I don't know if Larry was the best, but he won the two Spinks fights. He wasn't allowed to retire undefeated. I believe Ali's fights with Liston and Foreman were fixed. Ali lost at least 2 fights against Ken Norton. Tyson in his prime looked unbeatable, but alcohol and drugs beat Iron Mike. None of Larry's victories were fixed. I think Larry Holmes was the Greatest. Yes, I now say Larry was the best. He had to knock most of his opposition out in order to secure his wins.

Best boxing documentary on KZbin. Hands down. Anybody can watch this and find it interesting. Everytime I watch the intro with Joe Louis knocking out Max Schmeling - one of, if not the most, iconic heavyweight fights ever - it gives me the chills. There was a time when boxing was the most popular and meaningful sport around.

I don't think anyone could have beaten Joe Louis on that day. He had a look in his eyes I've never seen in any of his other footage. Schmeling made the mistake of turning his back to avoid head shots at one point, Louis destroyed him with body shots & broke his back. Schmeling spent weeks in Hospital after that fight.

Great documentary. Just finished reading "Championship Boxing" from Jack Dempsey. He clearly uses what he wrote in the book. I was relieved after learning about his years after boxing. Sadly, most of these champs had a rough life afterwards.

Larry never fought Foreman. And big George won the heavyweight title for a second time while Holmes was active. If Larry wanted to be remembered it was his own fault he is not. If he was better, he never proved it in the ring.

One thing that's hugely apparent with a bunch of boxers through the years starting with JACK DEMPSEY.. YOU CAN'T BE INACTIVE FOR THREE YEARS WITHOUT FIGHTS AND EXPECT TO REMAIN CHAMPION.. when he fought Gene Tunney he had a three-year layoff.. and then later Fighters like MUHAMMAD ALI, MIKE TYSON, WHO ALSO HAD OVER THREE YEAR OFFS FOR DIFFERENT REASONS LEARNED THE SAME LESSON!!

Norfolk Boy He was never an undisputed champion. I think he only hold the WBC title and there was not a unified/undisputed champion. King of the Ring are only the “The Undisputed Champions”. This could be the reason that era was not mentioned. I hope that answered your question.

@@dwasd6951 Joe and Ali had 3 fights. Ali won 2 ( 1 by TKO and 1 by unanimous decision) and Joe won one. Incidentally, Forman destroyed Farser ( very humiliating in which Joe was discombobulated) and after that fought Ali. I would say that fight was Forman's first lost by a knockout ( preceded by his knockdown)

Thank you to those responsible for this excellent Boxing documentary. At age 54, it was the best of it's kind, I have ever seen. Covered so much boxing history, in such minimal amount of time. Question: Why did Jack Dempsey never fight Jack Johnson? Both popular at the same time. The fight would have broke records at the box office. So, why didnt it happen?

Jack lost the championship 5 years before dempsey got it, and by that time was a bit past his peak

Yeah I think Jack Johnson was retired by the time Dempsey was fighting for championships. Perhaps the bravest thing Jack J did was marry a white women. When he retired he opened a desegregated Restaurant. I would put him right up there with some of the better know civil rights activists.

Max had a severe back injury in the second fight. He shouldn't have fought at all. Being a good sportsman, non-nazi, Max went ahead with the fight and you can hear him call out in pain when hit by Joe.

I just learned that smelling said 35 years after Joe lewis 2 that Joe hit him so hard he spent 2 weeks in the hospital and his back was still messed up. A brutal sport.

The older people that got me in to boxing didn't like him for the same reason I don't. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way with how he spoke about his victory over Ali. Even then they all knew Ali was not right and he was already taking medication for his Parkinson's syndrome before that fight. His crowning and most bragged about achievement was beating someone late in their years for boxing with brain damage. Maybe if he would have been more humble about it most people wouldn't think he is an ass.

Trevor Berbick, Carl William's, Mike Weaver, Ray Mercer, Ken Norton, etc. He beat many top level boxers who were young, in and around their primes, when Larry beat them. He had a fantastic career. Witherspoon, L. Spinks, Berbick, Smith, Weaver, Norton, all held one of the heavyweight world championships at one time. Larry is the best heavyweight since Ali left boxing, IMO. Better than Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Klitschko brothers, etc. Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali are the two best heavyweight champions in boxing history. After them, we can talk about Holmes, Foreman, Marciano, Frazier, Johnson, Dempsey, Holyfield, Tyson, Lewis , Liston, etc.

He actually cleaned out his division of everybody worth fighting. Jerry Cooney was a fantastic fighter in his young days, he knocked out Kenny Norton in one round.

His eign has been called "the dark reign of Jack johnson". its not fair, really, he was an amazing champion and beat the best theof the best in his era. He drew the colored line against his own race, but he had defeated the top black fighters before he had become champion. He honestly was the best of his time.

You see Primo Carnera? He was 6'5-6", and weighed an average 260 when he fought. Thats what a large, natural athlete looks like without all the 'supplements'. Like Bruno Sammartino benching 575 with no supps, he wouldnt even take vitamins for a long time, bc he considered them 'chemicals'. It was only after a doctor explained to him what they were. 575 is an impressive weight by any measure, but to do it on just the food you eat and exercise is even more impressive, imo.
