Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues. Last week, a decisive battle started in New Guinea, as the Allied forces attempted to quickly destroy the Japanese defenses in the Buna-Gona area. Yet we only got to see the beginning of this struggle last time, and contrary to MacArthur’s expectations, there is much more to tell about the bloody Battle of Buna-Gona. Additionally, today we’ll see Colonel Carlson and his Raiders embark on a Long Patrol to pursue and destroy the Shoji Detachment, a patrol that would last for 29 days and that would see the Raiders endure some of the most extreme conditions in the jungles of Guadalcanal.

Established Titles does not give you Real Titles at all, you don't get anything at all, the Laird title is limited to ONE per property and cannot be divided like that, more importantly, your "souvenir plots" can't be registered due to a prohibition as per Land Registration (Scotland) Act 2012, s 50 (2).

EstablishedTitles is a Scam! Stay away. Bummer he slings this garbage. The company behind Established Titles only gives a vague address within the plots of land it purports to sell (which should belong to others) and it is not a postal address, which means it cannot be the registered address of the business. Further digging shows that the company is actually based in Hong Kong but according to its Terms and Conditions page, it abides by the laws of the State of New York (however, no such company actually exists in NY and Established Titles does not appear anywhere on the HK company’s website apart from a reference to single individual by the name of Katerina Yip). Additionally, souvenir plots are not registered with the Land Register of Scotland, meaning you don’t legally own the land and in fact, the land you “bought” can be sold to others as well. Buying a single square foot of land is NOT enough to actually make you a Lord or Lady; the British and Scottish take these traditions very seriously: The Court of the Lord Lyon (a Scottish court specifically dedicated to overseeing all issues of heraldry, including titles and coats of arms usage) has ruled that programs like Established Titles are not real and anyone using a descriptor like Lord or Lady supposedly granted to them through the purchase of a souvenir plot has no real right or authority to use them

Echoing what everybody else is saying, Established Titles isn't genuine. The company is based in Hong Kong, one square foot of land is not enough to get you a Lordship, and there's no legal backing up of these "Titles." If you went to Scotland and tried using these titles, they'd laugh in your face. I love the channel, but you need to stop promoting these snake oil salesmen. It's a scam, and you're better than taking their shill-money.

It was mainly the work of his media/pr team. He would finally be sacked after his blunder at Chosin Reservoir in Korea. His decision to keep pushing into North Korea and go against the orders of President Truman to stop advancing and hold the 38th parallel would ultimately lead to Chinese intervention in the war, resulting in the battle of Chosin Reservoir and the UN withdrawing its forces back to the 38th parallel. His inability to admit he made a mistake would ultimately be his downfall.

They are fighting against extremely entrenched and hidden Japanese soldiers while also having streched thin supply lines with unfavorable terrain. They're gonna have trouble breaking their lines no matter whose in charge. This channel gives too much grief to Macarthur when he held out against japan in the Philippines longer than anyone else in the early months of the war.

A few years ago I was reading some first hand accounts of the "Battle of Brisbane". I remember reading one account by an American that the day after the "battle", an Aussie came up to him, slapped him on the back and said "that was one Hell of a roll we had last night huh?", and he said the Aussie bought him a drink.

The Australian officers at Buna wanted 24 hrs for reconnaissance but where told no from MacArthur and this killed a lot of Australians, after the battle it was found that there was a gap in the Japanese defences which could have been exploited thus saving a lot of lives !

Just another Screwball decision from Dugout Douggie! Biggest Tragedy in American Military History is Douggie MacArthur. He knew how to manuever the press! I hated him from learning of his days on the streets of Washington when he turned loose the Tanks on the Bonus Marchers! He totally Bungled the Defense of the Philippines and then Rammed thru a CMH for his ineptitude. He wanted to invade Rabual!!! WTF! His whole New Guinea Battle plan is/was a JOKE! Any Second Lu from West Point could have done better! Now, there is clear evidence he was a pedophile and kept a 16 year old Philippine child/girl as his play toy. The guy should be stricken from any form of Military acclaim in the USA. It would have been quicker/cheaper/easier in terms of human life to bypass the Philippines and take Formosa/Taiwan but Douggies EGO didn't allow such travesty. The narrator does not mention this, but prior to landing, Dog Company’s strength had been reduced to about 40 men. Because of this, Peatross mentions that one 20 men were kept as HQ defense and the other used as a “Special Recon” patrol. During the Asamana engagement, Hubert Faltyn says they were walking down the narrow path and were ambushed, cutting the 20 man patrol into two. Captain MacAuliffe (who would later become a company commander in 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines at Peleliu), after trying to escape multiple ambushes, eventually made it back to Carlson, who was furious. As another force was being assembled, in comes Plt Sergeant Harold Schrier (of Iwo Jima fame) with the survivors. Dog Company had lost two men that day, both of whom are still MIA.

@@jozzieokes3422 The operational necessity of the Raiders became obsolete after Guadalcanal, and USMC Generals didn't like the idea of an "elite" service within the Marine Corps syphoning the best men away from the Marine divisions.

A Pacific war was envisioned to be more fluid and wide-ranging than it ended up being, with the reality being a series of extremely high intensity fights in defined locations to control air and sea routes to the next battle zone. As such, a small and relatively lightly armed unit (few heavy weapons and no artillery) that nevertheless soaked up many of their best recruits was unpopular with Marine commanders who were fighting divisional battles for the first time in their history. Raiding as a shaping operation to conventional assault soon became de rigeur in Marine doctrine, but the units to do so were folded into Marine divisions as organic assets - what became Force Recon - and the existence of a dedicated and separate commando unit was disbanded. Modern Marine Raiders as part of SOCCOM is really a neologistic consequence of Special Forces becoming effectively a sixth branch of the US military during the GWOT, and the USMC not wanting to be left out. As well, unlike WW2, the US usually lacks the political will (or clear objectives) to send conventional divisions into sustained combat, meaning the use casse for commando style units exists now in a way that it did not in 1943.

It's such a shame that Carlson's guerrilla tactics are not used after this operation. It was just such an effective tactic. Imagine what the Vietnam and Korean Wars would be if the US focused on guerrilla tactics for its specialized missions like this one.

People forget that Americans pioneered the effective use of light infantry in guerrilla tactics. Ever since the Revolutionary War and instances such as Timothy Murphy’s assassination of British general Simon Fraser and the minute men militias, we have been using tactics like those used in Carlson’s patrol and the tactics overall used by the Marine Raiders throughout our wars. You could argue the 1st US Sharpshooters (disbanded in 1864) was a guerrilla warfare unit. Unlike commandos that pursue butcher and bolt, hit and run objectives, guerrilla units lead a prolonged campaign against the enemy using concealment, surprise and evasion to disrupt enemy operations. The reason we got our butts kicked in Vietnam is that our Army and Marines grew too conventional. Guerrilla tactics in warfare is the future, you can see them at work in Ukraine currently.

Anybody who loves the Pacific Theater might enjoy the series of books by WEB Griffin titled "The Corps". Although fiction, the historicity of this series is spot on. Thanks Kings and Generals for this wonderful series. The only thing I would ask is maybe a mileage/KM scale and a cardinal direction indicator for some of the battles--it helps to understand how vicious the fighting was to see how many were lost in taking a few hundred yards of stinking jungle. I've read great detailed accounts and would like to see the combined US, Cdn and British efforts through eastern Europe.

Ah yes Battle of Brisbane. Several factors skipped here that sparked the violence: 1. The Australian military was generally disregarded by America's high command. Douglas MacArthur had already expressed a low opinion of Australian troops, who were then fighting along the Kokoda Track. Though Australia was bearing the brunt of the land war in New Guinea by itself, MacArthur would report back to the United States on "American victories", while Australian victories were communicated to the United States as "American and Allied victories". 2. U.S. military pay was considerably higher than that of the Australian military and U.S. military uniforms were seen as more appealing than those of the Australians. The U.S. Army provided silk stockings and candy to American troops which they handed out to Australian women, as well as U.S. Army rations, in a time where Australians were on a poor diet due to rationing of food to civilians. This resulted in U.S. servicemen not only enjoying success in their pursuit of the few available women but also led to many Americans marrying Australian women, facts greatly resented by the Australians. 3. Many factors reportedly contributed to these tensions, including the fact that U.S. forces received better rations than Australian soldiers, shops and hotels regularly gave preferential treatment to Americans, and the American custom of "caressing girls in public" was seen as offensive to the Australian morals of the day. Lack of amenities for the Australians in the city also played a part. The Americans had PXs offering merchandise, food, alcohol, cigarettes, hams, turkeys, ice cream, chocolates, and nylon stockings at low prices, all items that were either forbidden, heavily rationed, or highly priced to Australians. : While race was not a direct causative factor in this instance, it has been cited as a cause of tension between Australians and Americans and as a contributing factor. This tension arose from the treatment and segregation of the African-American soldiers by the U.S. military. Racial issues and segregation also played a substantial role in conflict between locals and Americans in both New Zealand and Britain. While in civilian life white Australians treated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in largely the same way as white Americans treated black Americans, institutional discrimination was "paternalistic", varying significantly from state-to-state. Despite official policy ostensibly barring the enlistment of indigenous Australians, in practice, a more flexible approach was adopted that saw many indigenous Australians enlist. Segregation was not overtly practiced and most Indigenous Australians received equal pay, were promoted on merit and were generally accepted and treated as equals. Troops of the U.S. 208th Coast Artillery rioted for 10 nights in March 1942, fighting against African-Americans from the 394th Quartermaster Battalion. This was attributed to white American resentment towards African-American access to dance halls and for associating with "white girls on the streets of Brisbane". As a result, U.S. military authorities segregated African-Americans, restricting them to the south side of the Brisbane River. However, trouble continued with a major race riot at Wacol, knife fights in South Brisbane and American military police assaulting or killing black troops simply for crossing the Brisbane River. This further incited the Australians, whose culture towards military police was notably different. : According to authorities, up to 20 brawls a night were occurring between Australian and American servicemen. In the weeks leading up to the Battle of Brisbane there were several major incidents, including a gun battle between an American soldier and Australian troops near Inkerman which left one Australian and the American dead, an Australian soldier was shot by an American MP in Townsville, an American serviceman and three Australian soldiers in Brisbane's Centenary Place were involved in a confrontation which left one Australian dead, an American soldier was arrested for stabbing three servicemen and a Brisbane woman near the Central railway station, and twenty Australians fought American submariners and members of the USN Shore Patrol, mauling them badly. On the morning of the battle, an Australian soldier was batoned by an American MP in Albert Street

There is so much hidden depth to the "Battle of Brisbane". In brief the brutality of American MPs was something that often shocked and horrified allied nations during the war. When a mixed group of Aussies and Yanks were coming home after a night of drinking a pair of MPs decided to pull them up for being drunk. When they didn't produce their IDs fast enough the MPs started beating them with their billy clubs. Nearby Aussies witnessing the unwarranted brutality came to the aid of the drunks. The combined group chased the MPs back to their nearby station, jeering them and threatening them. In retaliation the MPs emerged from their station with shotguns and after the crowd ignored warnings to disperse began brandishing the weapons. Something happened and the MPs opened fired on the crowd, wounding several and killing one. Understandably foreign cops gunning down people on the street enraged local Aussies who then spend the next night roaming in groups beating the crap out of any MPs they could find. A "regrettable incident" to be sure but one entirely to blame on the poor training and brutality of American MPs. Another fun incident was when the US MPs caused a riot in England by attempting to segregate pubs in towns near their bases. Or in New Zealand when MPs attempted to stop Maori servicemen from drinking in a pub with their comrades and were promptly taught why you don't mess with Maoris. In brief there is a major, very downplayed thread of brutal and/or racist US military cops causing issues in allied nations by being assholes. It's a interesting rabbit hole to check out.

When my grandad's (British) platoon came home from North Africa prior to D-day, they went to the local pub and found a sign up saying "US only" as an officer he then "saw nothing" as appropriate action was taken - after that he and his platoon underwent "compulsory fratenisation with US units - one plus point being he got to fly in a B17 :-)!"

Wow the cost on the marines for such hard fighting is eye opening. Makes one realize that while those victories were great, the fact that they couldn't fight anymore actually hurt the American war effort. Maybe not the most effective strategy.

Carlson was the promulgator of the Marine Raiders, and he was determined to prove his theory. As in all jungle fighting at that time, debilitation of troops from the environment was epic. The Aussies in the Kokoda Track campaigns had many lost due to inability to recover, and of the Chindits in Myanmar the majority were forever unfit for service after their initial raids.

My grandfather was in a RAAF repair and salvage unit was present during the "Battle of Brisbane" and watched it unfold below from a vantage point up in the GPO. The spark that started things was when some American MPs were excessively beating up on a American PFC and some beer affected diggers tried to intervene. My grandfather's unit had been assigned to work with a US repair and salvage unit and some fellow US NCOs had gone into Brisbane on leave with him for a drink. When the violence kicked off my grandfather used his local knowledge to get his group up a little known access to a safe vantage point high in the GPO. It was a rare occurrence for my grandfather to talk about his wartime experience however a newspaper article prompted him to correct some false claims that had been made about the incident.

No offense to MacArthur fanboys but he only seems like a take it or die trying type of dude so long as he doesn't have to do the dying. I guess it makes sense because dying violently sounds like it sucks. However, it seems like he is under the impression his subordinates are chilling around a campfire on a tropical beach drinking beers with the Japanese and not dying violently throwing themselves headlong at prepared defensive positions. What's more, it seems like he thinks the perceived inactivity is some sort of spitful maneuver directed at him personally.

So many frontal assaults, one after the other, with little or no change in tactics. This is disregard for the soldier's lives is astounding. Any commander that orders a frontal assault in an entrenched enemy without any force multipliers (i.e. armour) is knowingly sending men to their graves. You don't do this is you are taking over some juggle thousands of miles from your homeland. You do this to DEFEND your homeland.

EstablishedTitles is a Scam! Stay away. Bummer he slings this garbage. The company behind Established Titles only gives a vague address within the plots of land it purports to sell (which should belong to others) and it is not a postal address, which means it cannot be the registered address of the business. Further digging shows that the company is actually based in Hong Kong but according to its Terms and Conditions page, it abides by the laws of the State of New York (however, no such company actually exists in NY and Established Titles does not appear anywhere on the HK company’s website apart from a reference to single individual by the name of Katerina Yip). Additionally, souvenir plots are not registered with the Land Register of Scotland, meaning you don’t legally own the land and in fact, the land you “bought” can be sold to others as well. Buying a single square foot of land is NOT enough to actually make you a Lord or Lady; the British and Scottish take these traditions very seriously: The Court of the Lord Lyon (a Scottish court specifically dedicated to overseeing all issues of heraldry, including titles and coats of arms usage) has ruled that programs like Established Titles are not real and anyone using a descriptor like Lord or Lady supposedly granted to them through the purchase of a souvenir plot has no real right or authority to use them

If even one person would decide not to buy it if they knew it wasn't legitimate, then it's a thing that they should be up front about. People can get mad at MacArthur, but his impatience with the progress at Buna was understandable considering the state of the 32nd Infantry Division under General Harding, who did almost nothing to assert control over the battle and allowed his junior officers to loiter in the rear while enlisted men were fighting without direction.

Nah--I'm staying mad at MacArthur. Nimitz went to tour his troops' encampments and talk with front-line commanders about their progress and needs. Mac just sat in the rear and issued orders that had little connection to the realities on the ground.

Probably because at the time of this battle the Japanese controlled the Solomon Sea from their base in Rabaul. If there was any naval bombardment to tbe done it would be the Japanese Navy doing the shooting.

I have spent time in these places in New Guinea. Before comparing the swamps and jungles of New Guinea to the medieval fields in battles like Agincourt or Stirling Bridge I suggest you go there yourself and see what the fighting conditions were like. There are several authors who report the field conditions in New Guinea were the worst battlefields in the entire WW2 - including.both Lenningrad and Stalingrad.

I'm a US Citizen, and I think history is too kind to MacArthur. His entire campaign in the SW Pacific is typified by unrealistic expectations and blaming subordinates for his own failures. The only reason he kept pressing so hard in the Buna Gona campaign was because he didn't want to lose his influence as the Marines were winning in Guadalcanal.
