It wasn't just the loss of ships and aircraft, but the irreplaceable losses of trained aircrew and, often ignored and forgotten, the loss of trained technical crewmen. Not having an in-depth plan for recruitment and training meant depletions in resources incurred permanent reductions in capability. A serious oversight . . .

They were also aircraft trained for a specific carrier while the american one were universal Meaning that if a japanese pilot lose it's aircraft he would be under trained for the other aircraft.

I agree completely. As a former Marine, my interest in later engagements from Guadalcanal to Okinawa is good, the march of the Japanese up until they received a bloody nose had not been covered very well (except for the Doolittle Raid) until Midway.

The defenders of Wake Island, Sailors, Marines, Army, and civilians, held for sixteen days. They caused great embarrassment to the Japanese, sinking two destroyers, damaging many more ships in the first attempt by the Japanese to take the island. Second, and final, attempt, they beached two patrol boats full of Special Naval Landing Force personnel. Only for the defenders to set the boats on fire. The Imeprial military also lost between 10-21 aircraft shot down. A submarine, the RO-66, was lost near the island, but it was caused by a collision with a fellow submarine, and not by the defenders. The RO-66 did not recieve orders to return to base, thus she stayed on station. While recharging her batteries on the surface, the RO-66 was rammed by the RO-62, the latter assumed the RO-66 recieved its orders to withdraw and did so. The RO-66 was lost with all but three hands. Japan lost around 1,000 men killed, wounded, or missing trying to take the atoll. Once they did they turned it into a fortress, using prisoners for slave labor. Only for the Americans to simply bypass and cut off the island, letting the new garrison starve.

Small correction at 2:02:44 you have the mini sub M-24 turning south out of Sydney Harbour, but correctly state it was found off Bungan Head. Bungan head is actually to the north of the entrance to Sydney Harbour, near the suburb of Newport. But not an overly important detail in an absolutely brilliant series. Will the long form video of the New Guinea campaign be posted at some stage?

They lied to him for the entire war. Hirohito was a pacifist, who didn't hold enough power to depose his militarist generals. He didn't want any sort of Japanese expansion at the start, and only when they were in to deep did he try to plan with his generals. Many think of him as evil and totalitarian, and in a few instances, this is true, but the amount of crimes that happened where mostly instigated by his military high command. The order to pillage and rape in Nanking, his generals, the order to invade china in the first place, his generals, the orders invade Manchuria and establish a zone of control, his generals. Even the more infamous groups in his nation like the Japanese research group, were kept under raps from him.

That faction had been lying to and manipulating their emperor since the Samurai was targeted. The militant faction saw them as a threat. The only threat the samurai posed was to hinder them from adopting western trappings. It was ultimately greed that motivated them.

57:45 only the Bordeaux Maru was sunk at Kwajalein - CL Katori, ML Tokiwa and AS Yasukuni Maru were only damaged in the attack!

Basically the phase from Pearl to Midway was America's Battle of Britain, Guadalcanal and Solomons were like the American version of 1941-1942 North African and Mediterranean

Yeah. The Japanese over committed to midway and payed for it severely. And while midway killed the IJN, guadalcanal and the Solomons would kill the Japanese so bad they had to figure out a way to die twice.

Really enjoy this series. As an American I always find it odd that in school when teaching about world War 2 90% of the focus is in the European theatre, despite the fact that the only reason the US joined the war was due to Japan's attack on pearl harbor. America's entry into the war was due to Japan and ended with Japan as well and yet all the focus is in Europe when teaching it in school. Are you also planning to make one of these playlists for the European theatre in the future as well?

Immediately following the Pearl Harbor attack, General Douglas MacArthur had plenty of time, at least 8-9 hours, to reposition his air assets located at Clark Field and other Luzon locations; sufficient time to orderly reposition them south to predetermined auxiliary fields on Mindanao. Upon learning of the initial IJN and IJA assaults Pacific wide, MacArthur had literally locked himself physically off in his private office and into an extended period of self-imposed “incommunicado” for over eight hours, cutting himself off to any consultation with subordinate officers and refused to issue any orders following word of the surprise Japanese strikes. Army Air Forces General Lewis Brereton, commander of the U.S. Army Air Forces in the Philippines, repeatedly urged General Richard Sutherlund, MacArthur’s chief of staff, that he be allowed to see MacArthur in order to obtain permission to release the bombers so as to fly the planned contingency strikes on Japanese air bases on Formosa with a return run south to Mindanao. MacArthur remained incognito for unknown reasons until after his entire air force, parked, with engines turning awaiting the go-order, had all been destroyed on the ground awaiting those go-orders that never arrived. MacArthur had also prepositioned most all of his defensive supplies in the event of a Japanese invasion; including food, medical supplies, ammunition, towed 105mm artillery, etc. in large caches in and around Luzon because he (MacArthur) always claimed he was planning to “defend the beaches” in case of a general Japanese assault. When that invasion day arrived, he did no such thing. Subsequent to the expected Japanese invasion and following the destruction on the ground, of his bomber and fighter forces; MacArthur, without prior notice to anyone in Washington or his subordinate commanders, threw out the established U.S.Joint Chiefs of Staff War Plan Orange and ordered a general withdrawal south down the length of Luzon island and ultimately into the bottleneck that was Bataan and ultimately Corregidor. In doing so he abandoned virtually all of the previously cached prepositioned combat supplies needed to defend the island as per set forth in War Plan Orange. Or for that matter, to significantly strengthen his defensive stand on Bataan and Corregidor. This all was just in the first weeks of the war. He doesn’t get much better as an Army General after this time period either. Even when he demanded President Truman let him atomic bomb the Chinese to end the Korean War! As a matter of fact , Douglas MacArthur was this republic’s worst commanding general since George B. McClellan of Civil War infamy.

The issue with a third wave attack on PH was a bit more complicated. Given when the returning planes from the previous waves were recovered and the weather a third wave would have been problematic to organize and recover before night fall. Landing at night in bad weather alone could have resulted in serious losses of IJN aircraft and aircrew, resources that Japan would find difficulty replacing.

The US cracked the JIN code and knew their next target was Midway.

That code break single handedly turned the tide of the war. Perhaps a bit of hubris on Japan’s side. I have zero doubt Japan would have continued to absolutely wipe face if it wasn’t for that. You really got to hand it to them. Very small country, stretched as thin as their lines were, everything had to go perfectly, which it essentially had up until that point. Infinitely resourced, bubba gump America probably would have overwhelmed eventually, but damn, Japan was absolutely locked and loaded.
