Fun fact the US fleet planning to invade Kyushu had Japan not surrendered were also hit with a Typhoon shortly after the surrender. It heavily damaged most of the merchant ships and quite a few warships. Japan's weather is not friendly to enemy fleets.

It isn't weird. There's typhoons every year, it's like hurricanes in Florida. If you pay attention, each campaign lasted months. It was a matter of time before they got caught in a typhoon, and they spent plenty of time. It was bound to happen. Also both times they were already retreating. An interesting fact maybe worth mentioning is that, even though the Japanese were victorious, the invasions did destabilize the government and led to its collapse. Traditionally, Japanese warriors were awarded after combat with the spoils taken from the vanquished (usually land), but since this was a defensive victory there were no spoils to share. Disgruntled warriors and their daimyo became more and more rebellious, and the financial burden of the defense was being felt heavily. Japan always was a collection of estates more than a unified country, and the outcome of the invasions drove these estates and their lords further apart.

i mean, even before mongol invasions japan was a land of warring factions. a little over two or three times i think that japan was actually united in one banner? correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the shogunate that was established before the mongol invasion was because of the mongol invasion in the first place, thus they weren't really that stable in the first place.

@@futoifutomomodesu3206 The Kamakura shogunate was established after the Genpei War (1180-1185). Japan did not see the first Mongol invasion until 1274, so I doubt the 2 are connected. I'm no expert on the Kamakura period though so I could be wrong.

To be more exact, After this battle,The Hojo clan reinforced thier influence across japan. This state is called the exclusive control of the Hojo-Tokuso family. As a result, Emperor and the other powerful samurai clans repined against the dictatorship of the Hojo clan. The Ashikaga clan is one of them.

The storms helped a lot, but only because the Samurai were skilled enough to keep the Mongols in the water. What an heroic defence. (And just killing the Mongol's envoy after that first attack was a boss move.)

After first attack, a young shogun thought they will come back. So J built stone walls of 2~3 M high and 30KM long alongside Hakata bays. Although Mongole 140,000 army and 4500 ships reached Hakata, they could not land for two months, Japanese were only one third of mongole army, J were waithing and fought off in front of walls. Mongole were backed off to Islands near Kyushu , four times. but J attacked at each island where Mongole were. Finally Mongole built stone walls for protection on the island and surrounded the island by their ships. J was good at fight against one by one. So during night J crept into their ships and kill. Mongole tactics were fight enemies as groups from distance with arrows or riding on horse. During two months, their tactics became defensive only. Then Kami Kaze came.

Assuming that the emperor is a figurehead mostly dominated politically by the shogun, then there was a certain period of Japanese history where the shogun was in turn a figurehead dominated by a regent or some "shogun's assistant" or something like that. However, this was only a small part of Japanese history. Most of the time, the shogun was the direct ruler behind the emperor, and was no figurehead of anyone else. I don't think Ieyasu abdicating to his son and/or heir counts as a "regent of a regent" because they're still both the same institution/"faction".

@@ZhangK71 Ieayasu wasn't actually a "regent of a regent", but he was too much of a relentless and cunning politician to completely and voluntarily cede power. He was shogun for a mere 2 years, between 1603 and 1605, then abdicated in order to avoid the same fate as his immediate predecessors. He was exposed too much in that position. But he continued to rule the country as the ogosho until his death in 1616. You can easily find information about this on the internet. His son and heir became the new shogun, but it was, and it is, clear where the real power resided.

There was another large one in 1019 by China and Korea. 300 ships with 3000 men . Tsushima was invaded by surprise, took women&children of 1200, killed 300. There is precise number was recorded but I can not remember. The monk reported to Bakufu/Government for help and reported what villagers&he saw. They ate human fresh uncooked and domestic animals including dogs. Japanese were horrified. "The Japanese abominate meat eating for no account as cruel and unclean. " by 17 Century Jesuit Missionary

By the way, someone should mention the incredible similarities between the Mongol invasion of Japan and the Persian invasion of Greece in the 5th century BC. The similarities are crazy: 1) In both cases the aggressor was the largest empire in the world, an unstoppable force that never faced defeat before 2) Number of invasions for Mongols and Persians before they gave up the campaigns: two! 3) Persian fleet was destroyed by a storm close to Chalkidiki - Mongolian fleet was destroyed by the typhoon 4) Persian invasion led to the unification of the Greek city states and the self-identification of the notion of being "Greek" - Mongol invasion had exactly the same result in Japan! It really feels as history repeated herself in the Eastern Asian version of it.

And the fact that both failed against underdog nations significantly smaller than them (the two smaller nations having their culture and warriors still renowned today and considered badass, which I find awesome). Both the Achaemenid and Mongol Empire collapsed soon after as well, albeit one was through literal conquest by ya boy Alexander and the other just fractured and dissipated. Still tho, so many similarities.

Fun fact: the Japanese sea wall defending against the Mongol invasion was built by Japanese clans, each clan constructing and maintaining a section of the wall individually. This video shows kublai khan in an entire different light to what is usual in pop culture. In my experience, kublai is often portrayed as a wise leader who effectively became chinese, leaving behind his mongolian ancestry and whatnot. I've never heard of his abscence of government, his military mismanagement and his overall responsibility (or lack of) in the empire's later fragmentation.

I can recommend a pretty good anime called Angolmois Genkou Kassenki, depicting the Mongol invasion of Tsutshima, it a semi historical and semi fictional account of the samurai encountering the Mongol warfare.

@@someorclad9738 also Ghost of tsutshima lool interesting although it is pretty fictional not to mention the mongols in there are inaccurate depicted as they look stereotypical "barbarian" look while in reality they are pretty much organized and have standard uniform based on Chinese and Koreans armor

@@hanchiman You got that right. The Mongols were pretty much a full on Imperial force by this point. In the game, they look more like Huns if anything. But hey, it looks awesome so who really cares. Shame it doesn't have a Sekiro or Bloodborne like look (Gothic anime inspired rather than full on realism).

@@someorclad9738 oh yeah. In terms of beautiful Japanese armor depiction. I think Nioh is pretty much the best one. All the armor that Willy was wearing were based on famous general and daimyo historical armors. They even have info of each armor.

Mongolians did not know the operation principle of paper money, so a large number of printing paper money led to currency. Expansion. Kublai's forces were also routed by the Vietnamese at the Battle of Bach Dang River (invasion of Dai Viet by the Yuan dnasty) and stands as one of the greatest defeat of the Mongols. Hope K&G team adds this up for their future video in the Mongol series. Great content as always, Cheers!

@Adib yep the massacre of 1305 AD ordered by the Sultan against converted mongol citizens/POW's and a series of failed mongol invasions of the Delhi sultanate, still those defeats cannot surpass casualties suffered by the Yuan dynasty in Dai Viet (Tran Dynasty). At the Battle of Bach Dang 1288 alone the mongols lost 80,000 men of the original 110,000. so yeah Dai Viet may very well be the Mongol's "Vietnam".

Adib those 29 invasions 'claimed' by the Delhi sultanate was fought over centuries with different rulers of the sultanante (Khajils, Mamluks etc.). Those can be considered as series of see-saw battles in which Mongols (Chaggatid khanate) invade (e.g. occupation of Kashmir and Lahore in Punjab province for decades) and retreat after being routed, at the same time ravaging towns along the way. Most of these battles was waged as raid/retaliations from previous defeats thus the mongols only field 1 to 2 tumen at any given time depending on how many mongol commander is present on the field (exceptions were battle of Rivi and Almorah? With casualties inficted against the mongols ranging 30 to 60 thousand). This back and forth raids by both sides never really stopped until the slow decay of the mongols over time. Having said that, the battle of bach dang river on 1288 was greater in scale because of the staggering loss of 80,000 mongol soldier in a SINGLE CAMPAIGN with vietnamese estimated loss of only 4-6 thousand men, thus at par with hannibals cannae, a complete battle of annihilation.

Man, I was going to play World of Tanks before work, but these videos are too interesting and I love learning too much...lol I just keep clicking the next video over and over. Also, I remember reading about this in a Clive Cussler book. I'm paused at 4:14 so I don't know if you mention this, but the book says this is where Kamikaze/"Divine Wind" came from - something about hurricanes destroying the Mongol fleet... Didn't this also happen with England vs Spain where John Dee told Queen Elizabeth not to do anything and hurricanes destroyed the Spanish fleet on more than one occasion? Also, it blows my mind to see a giant Aral Sea on the map. So crazy how big it used to be and how it's basically a pond now.
