The Third Century BC was a notoriously violent time, filled with titanic clashes and amazing personalities. Alexander’s conquests gave way to a period of constant warfare amongst his Seleucid, Ptolemaic and Antigonid successors, while the rising Roman juggernaut began a series of conquests to unite the Italian Peninsula, and fought its Carthaginian Rival, paving the way for future dominance. India during this period was also experiencing revolutionary change, which culminated in the rise of the Mauryan Empire and the reign of Ashoka the Great.

'Should one blame other religion, or over glorify one's own religion, they are instead doing harm to it'. This is the best quote I've heard and it's something that so resonates in today's world. Clearly Ashoka was thousands of years ahead of his time.

@SS this is not true for muhammad specifically i misconception is that muhammad was very cruel / prosecuted other religions. as a matter in fact it is stated in both history and the quran that Mohammad respected all religions though he might not agree with some he never prosecuted any religion as a matter in fact most of the initial converts do so willingly and it was muslims who were prosecuted in the arabian tribes. it is only after the death of muhammad that the new rulers of arab and leaders of islam started doing those and yet the modern radicalist muslims only exist relatively recently while. in most of history muslims was more religiously tolerant than other abrhamic religions.

@@KingsandGenerals You missed a very IMPORTANT part which explains how Ashoka's thinking changed towards WAR. After Magadh army defeated the Army of Kalinga, the Kalingan Women came out to defend the Kingdom and stood there in front on Ashoka's Army. The Women at the front, Wife of the King who lost, told Ashoka how much insanity and brutality he did in that War. The Queen was good with words. Then after so much of Eye Opening facts she told to Ashoka, he felt guilty and remorsed. I don't understand why this is not told much as this was the Point that Changed Ashoka.

Well, he might be but it's his grandfather who had already started something of that sort. Was Ashoka the greatest Maurya or was it his grandfather, can be debatable. Greek Megasthanes, ambassador of Selucas, in his book Indica depicts an India from Chandragupta's so morally higher than just anywhere in the world at that time. Mauryan India was an unbelievably morally superior society for its time. Maybe more or less it was the case in Ancient India everywhere, it just became better during Mauryas.

Ashoka is frankly incredible. I remember reading when I was teenager a translation of one of Ashoka's rock edicts. The one where he talks about the conquest of Kalinga and I was shocked!! Here was a King and conqueror who in a public monument openly saying "I was a super douchebag!", "I committed horrible crimes", "I regret making conquests", "I regret the acts associated with such things"!! Such statements, especially in public, are very, very rare by politicians and conquerors. Generally what we get are celebrations of conquest and the violence associated with it.Well I was completely aghast, and was more so when I found out Ashoka's background of violence and usurpation. Sadly there are many conquerors like Alexander the Great in human history but very few figures like Ashoka.

Ashoka was called a "Chakrabarti" when he conquered the whole India. And he was called "Great" when he became a peaceful. After this, most of the Hindu kings never wanted to invade any other countries, they believed in peace. Therefore, with such great warriors, Hindus never crossed their borders.

@@admiralrabbit5166 The western world abides by Archaeology, history, science. Often India and other regions are subject to anecdotes and subjectivity. Often romanticized stories often have no scientific evidence whatsoever. And thus it's far better to abide by these sciences and other clear proof which originate in the west but are nowadays global due to globalization. Again. This is entirely different from the sometimes also false inaccurate stories from the Western world in the 19th century. We today live in a very different world where everything is ruled by science and other western principles. Anything that is not provable nor any scientific or other evidence of remains a fantasy/opinion. For example much of India's own bronze age is all uncovered thanks to French and other western countries. In other words, Western civilization that helps uncover the past from various regions all over the world. From Greece and it's many incredible historic periods among it's bronze age and classical period, all the way to Afghanistan and other places where archaeologists and historians not only help to uncover, but also preserve, and build and fund museums for the next generations to come. Again. If there are clear eastern sources that can be applicable to a subject, then it's good to address it obviously.

@@caomhan84 Yes. Exactly that. And I know this because I have been following archaeology websites for 10+ years now and history covering all regions of the world. It took me some time to unravel the history and social structures, religion of India, but I have also found that many of the Indians on the internet preaching everything is one big fat lie. I have since then addressed countless of Indians who are telling lies and asked them to support their opinionated claims. And 99% of all Indians never ever came with one. Only a rare 1 out of 100 is actually able to "discuss" and actually try to come with something. The other 99 was insults, and more lies. And in the meantime I had 1001 sources, facts, archaeology sites, sciences and other proof to prove them wrong. And still then they try to play the ostrich and try putting their heads in the sand like extreme ignorant people. Anyway. there are also more educated Indian people who can relate to this and agree to India's incredibly poor state of education among people. Most people don't know anything about their history, and more importantly about other peoples history. I have spend those 10 years among world's history because I fell in love with Greek history, and so to know where Greek history truly stands, I had to know the history of all other regions. And by then my respect for Greece's history has truly grown. It's for a reason why it's the most influential civilization in the world and the foundation of the western world which dominates 60% of the world today and to where it's principles and achievements are globalized. --------------------------------------------------------- 2). . I know exactly the story of the flying machines haha. They are the Vimana's, the so-called flying machines thousands of years ago. One of the greatest fabricated anecdotal fairy-tales coming from Indian soil. The modern-day extremely romanticized Vimana's storytelling are based on a 1930 Indian book written by a man thousands of years later, completely out of context and own interpretation. The Vimana's have never been mentioned in the earliest religious texts and when it was mentioned in later religious texts, the Vimana's where still a horse with a carriage on the ground. That's is something completely different from these "fllying buildings that could travel to the stars". A profound difference between fiction and true evidence/what has been found to date. 3). And an Indian NASA scientist even launched a petition where he states that the talk at the science congress is pseudo-science, which represents nothing but myths and lies, and demands that the talk is cancelled. “ Controversy The 102nd Indian Science Congress to be held at the Mumbai University in January 2015 is scheduled to have a session on "ancient sciences through Sanskrit" in which a presentation on Vaimānika Śāstra is included. It is slated to be delivered by Captain Anand J. Bodas, a pilot, and Ameya Jadhav, who holds in a M.A. in Sanskrit as well as an M.Tech. degree. Captain Bodas, speaking to the news media, has said that the aeroplanes of Vedic times could fly not only from country to country, but also "from planet to planet." "In those days, aeroplanes were huge in size, and could move left, right, as well as backwards, unlike modern planes which only fly forward," he added. Ram Prasad Gandhiraman, a NASA scientist, has launched an on-line petition demanding that the talk be cancelled as it represents pseudo-science.[10][11] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaim%C4%81nika_Sh%C4%81stra

Despite repeated foreign invasions, Sri Lanka has survived for over 2,000 years as a single unitary nation because of the ethical, moral and logical strength of Buddhism that unified our people throughout our history! Futhermore, Sri Lanka has served as the primary center of Theravada Buddhism from which the faith was spread to South Asian nations by Sri Lankan Buddhist monks ! Indeed, we Sri Lankans have much to be grateful to this great and visionary king Dharma Ashoka of India! 🙏!❤!

Two of the greatest but both in very different ways. Strangely Alexander also had a change of heart as he grew older. Now that I think about it towards the end Alexander really did change almost like Asoka. But what made Asoka so special was that he changed at his zenith. Alexander changed much later in his life as he started realizing that his grasp on this earthly realm is ever shrinking with age. In a nutshell coming to sense with his own mortality changed Alexander but Asoka came to sense through witnessing the mortality of others caused by his actions.

@@fanaticslayer7523 You mention that Inscriptions from Ashoka's side mention that Cholas were under his rule. Odd it seems that there are no mentions from Cholas side that they served under any specific emperor. So there are two subjective sides to this story which is pretty much a 'He said, He said' situation. The only objective thing here is the historical accounts of the extent of Empire which repeats the fact that Ashoka's empire couldn't reach the Cholas and that Chola dynasty remained far and beyond Ashoka/any other dynasties...

Chandragupta and Chanakya are the great examples of Guru (teacher )and Shishya (student ) which worked on Akhand bharat (one India) concept and with their constant sacrifice and struggle..they gave indians a hope..Jai maa Bharati

@Ankit Tiwari for Sri Lankans, King Ashoka is an extremely important character in our history. It was the turning point of Sri lankan history that whole country's population became Buddhists around 2300 years ago.

Fun fact : Mauryan empire had the largest military in the world, even surpassing that of Roman's.

Number of soldiers don't win wars, strategies does. Look at our British army and navy. We didn't have as many men back then to fight yet we built THE largest Empire ever. One needs technology and smart tactics in army otherwise it's just raw meat.

@@niranjandesai6766 Exactly, but I do think that at that time you didn't have a m4 or patriot system... All you had was manpower, and sure tactics and strategy did matter, I really don't think you can defeat an army than is almost as big as your entire country. Moreover, what makes you think that Mauryan's didn't had a strategy of their own? Chandragupta negotiated with the Greeks, defeated the kingdom Alexander was not ready to go for, made unthinkable alliance and eventually conquered and united all of India. And fun fact : His territories stretched all the way from Afghanistan, Iran to Burma. So I really do believe that no matter how good the Romans were, they would have a really really hard time fighting the Mauryans let alone defeat them. (hypothetically) And let's not forget the fact that India was the most wealthiest nation since the dawn of civilization till 18th century.

@@niranjandesai6766 useless argument, we talked about largest army, British played the divide rule thing, they could have never defeated Marathas or Mughals in a open war. Mauryans on the other hand were strongest of their time, and were not divided. Romans stand no chance. What makes u think Romans are smarter than Indians.

Quite Informative. One addition point about first Maurya king, Chandragupta origin. It is not unknown. But quite a legendary story. Chandragupta was raise by his Guru Chanakya (Vishnugupta). Chanaykya was great visionary and dreamed of unified Bharat (India). Should check it out more

Existence of Chanakya is debatable because historical evidence suggests Chandragupta was mentored by Vishnugupta (not Chanakya which is possibly an imaginary figure). Just to add more the famous book Arthsastra is written by Kautilya (not by Chankya). Some groups has tried to relate both real persons Vishnugupta and Kautilya over this past and tried to give name as Chanakya.
