Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, had a long and successful reign. The Empire he ruled from Prague expanded, and his subjects lived in peace and prosperity. When he died, the whole Empire mourned. More than 7,000 people accompanied him on his last procession. The heir to the throne of the flourishing Empire was Charles' son, Wenceslas IV, whose father had prepared him for this moment all his life. But Wenceslas did not take after his father. He neglected affairs of state for more frivolous pursuits. He even failed to turn up for his own coronation as Emperor, which did little to endear him to the Pope. Wenceslas "the Idle" did not impress the Imperial nobility either. His difficulties mounted until the nobles, exasperated by the inaction of their ruler, turned for help to his half-brother, King Sigismund of Hungary. Sigismund decided on a radical solution. He kidnapped the King to force him to abdicate, then took advantage of the ensuing disorder to gain greater power for himself. He invaded Bohemia with a massive army and began pillaging the territories of the King's allies.

The hussite wars have always been a favorite of mine since reading szapkowskis remarkable trilogy of reynevan. Such an underrated period. Peasant armies resisting the bulk of the european knighthood, putting rome to shame by repelling multiple crusades, most of them with ease. Outstanding legends like the undefeated (!) Jan zizka who was said to lead the orebites for his last years completely blind, or andreas prokop, or ullrich of rosenburg, the most stoic defender of the loyalist cause in bohemia. The famous hradha proved to be one of the most genius and effective tactics in medieval history. And i just found myself being intrigued in the late medieval era where common warfare met the first gunpowder arms, a quite interesting mixture

Note that by the end of the 14th century, most European monarchies were in crisis. Not only was Wenceslaus IV imprisoned, but a similar fate awaited his brother-in-law Richard II in England and his cousin the mad Charles VI in France. The Western monarchies recovered in time, but the Bohemian kingdom never fully recovered from this crisis and was eventually absorbed by the Austrian Habsburgs. The main problem was Wenceslas' childlessness (and eventually Sigismund had only one daughter).
@rookiepundit84455 күн бұрын
What really sent Bohemia down was Decree of Kuttenberg and subsequent hussite wars. From golden age and Prague being seat of the emperor to troublemaking heretic province within less then century. Since than only Rudolf II (also childless) ruled from Prague shortly before 30 years war.

Thank you very much for another installment in your series on Czech history. Unfortunately I will not be able to play the game just yet...Anyway, two small mistakes I wanted to point out: Around the 2:47 mark the info box should read that Kladsko is in Czechia. If you had indeed meant to write the name of the country, not just an adjective, a national or the language. Around the 4-minute mark there is the matter of Hradčany. This is a name for the Castle district that stretches around and beyond the Castle grounds. Name of the Castle is "Pražský hrad", i.e. "Prague castle." For some reason, people from Germany tend to repeat this mistake and call the Prague Castle "Hradschin". That was never it, however. 😄👍

The czech identity wasn't really to distinguish themselves from empire or in nationalistic way "at all" , it was a natural humanistic linguistic evolution, wich started in the end of 13th century (otakar II send manifest to poland telling "that Bohemians and poles have same blood. And greedy Teutons will absorb Poland if they don't help "in short"), and started to be prominent in 14th century, (such as anti-german chronicle of Dalimil, and Charles IV issue decree that czech language will be spoke on diets and within Administration), From 1355 we have the first documented report of national differences in Bohemian cities. For example king Charles IV then issued a document for the city of Beroun in Bohemia, in which he stipulated that half of the Germans and half of the Czechs should sit in the local city council. The Czech community was so strong in Beroun, even among the wealthy townspeople, that it claimed representation in the town council. It can also be judged that the Czech national consciousness was already widespread among the townspeople at that time. how such a drastic change of events took place ? The answer is clear, due to the fact: first was the plague epidemic that ravaged Europe in the 14th century. The most terrible of them, the so-called Black Death from the forties of the 14th century, avoided most Czech countries. However, it is likely that its rampage in Germany greatly reduced the influx of immigrants to Bohemia, which significantly contributed to the development of Czech consciousness in larger cities. In 14th century long Before the Hussite Revolution, Czechs were already the majority both among the population and among the members of the city councils in many important cities, such as Pilsen, Slaný, Uherské Hradiště, Louny, Písek, Hradec Králové etc.. and all the cities of Prague. In other cities, such as Budweis this process had not yet been completed, but the Czech community was already numerous there. in beginning of 15th century basically majority of documents are in czech also as poetry/music/liturgy way before hussites wars (wich had more of a nationalistic ideas). Anyway a great video as always, this is just more of a objective take.
