I am an atheist, so, of course, what I think will be insulting for you. Religion is a good excuse to attack and invade, and it always has been this way. The idea that Arab/Berber lords were different just because they belonged to a particular religion is illogical. People invade and conquer. They did it before religions fully formed, and they did that even after they embraced atheism. That needs to stop and change.

What i wanted to know is what you think? I think those were not fought for religion. If they were fought for religion they wouldnt fight amongst each other. The only religious war that any country is always willing to fight is Israel. If you cant make the oldest religious people become completely atheist you shouldn't be optimistic about anything. Since they are more advanced in science and technology you would not say anything about them that would be insulting towards them!

An explosion of population growth fuled by rapid advances in agricultural technology, while the art and architecture of the era easily rivalled that of any other civilizations at the time. Millions of Muslims in the Middle East either secretly converted to Christianity or became atheists. Mostly because they are able to read the Quran and the Hadith now freely and question them on the basis of logic and morality. The apostates of Islam don't make this public, because then they would have to be executed according to Quran and Hadith: Sura 4:89 "They wish that you should reject faith as they reject faith, and then you would be equal; therefore take not to yourselves friends of them, until they emigrate in the way of God; then, if they turn their backs, take them, and slay them wherever you find them; take not to yourselves any one of them as friend or helper." (keep in mind Sura 4:65 in which ALlah commands full submission to his orders in the Quran) Sura 9:11-12 "But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then are they your brethren in religion. We detail Our revelations for a people who have knowledge. And if they break their pledges after their treaty (hath been made with you) and assail your religion, then fight the heads of disbelief - Lo! they have no binding oaths - in order that they may desist." Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 260: Narrated Ikrima: Ali burnt some people and this news reached Ibn 'Abbas, who said, "Had I been in his place I would not have burnt them, as the Prophet said, 'Don't punish (anybody) with Allah's Punishment.' No doubt, I would have killed them, for the Prophet said, 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.' " Sahih Bukhari (84:57) - [In the words of] "Allah's Apostle, 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'" Sahih Bukhari (89:271) - A man who embraces Islam, then reverts to Judaism is to be killed according to "the verdict of Allah and his apostle." al-Muwatta of Imam Malik (36.18.15)- "The Messenger of Allah said, "If someone changes his religion - then strike off his head." Reliance of the Traveller (Islamic Law) o8.1 - "When a person who has reached puberty and is sane voluntarily apostatizes from Islam, he deserves to be killed." Sura 16:101 And when We subtitute a verse in place of a verse - and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down - they say, "You, (O Muhammad), are but an inventor (of lies)." Provocateur: Unlike in the movies, battles aren't over in five minutes, they could go an entire day. Or even longer. Soldiers didn't battle like a great big streetfight either, ideally men were getting rotated in and out of the battle. So usually they had time to ask their neighbors what was going on. But you are right in the fact that it was very hard to know what was going on other than right in your vicinity. Just the other day I was reading a medieval historian writing about how the soldiers knew absolutely everything that happened in the battle THE DAY AFTER it was over. Immediately after the battle they don't know squat other than what they saw for themselves. Great point you made. Hope I wasn't patronizing you with the explanation...on this site you could be a Professor of Military History at West Point or you could be a sixteen year old who likes Game of Thrones, so I may have overexplained.

@@KingsandGenerals When naming kings of Aragon you should use they translated names if not the original. I am saying this because in this video you name Peter II of Aragon "Pedro", which is the Spanish translation. Spanish was not even official in the crown of Aragon, and most of its monarchs where culturally catalan, so the name should be "Pere" or maybe in this case "Pero". The rest of kings signed as Jaume, Alfons or Anfós, Pere, Joan, Martí... El Sid was a great hero - his wife Jimena Diaz was equally supportive to him. When El Cid was dead in an unlucky skirmish with Berbers , her wife , strapped El Cid's body to his horse , and stationed him atop the castle of Valencia, lied to the people that he was still alive, and commanded the army of Valencia , herself and defeated the Berbers. El Sid used to be a knight in the kingdom of Castillion, and when the jealous king Alphonso banished El Sid , his wife and daughters were jailed in dungeons of Castellion - however the banished El Sid soon found support from Muslim Emirs , and freed his family.

@@faizanhashmi389 despite their untouchable reputation, Abu Bakr ibn Ibrahim ibn Tashfin and Yusef's nephew Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad both failed to defeat El Cid. Yusef then sent Abu'l-Hasan 'Ali al-Hajj, but he was not successful either. In 1097, on his fourth trip to al-Andalus, Yusef sought to personally dig down and fight the armies of Alfonso VI, making his way towards the all but abandoned, yet historically important, Toledo. Such a concerted effort was meant to draw the Christian forces, including those laying siege to Valencia, into the center of Iberia. On August 15, 1097, the Almoravids delivered yet another blow to Alfonso's forces, a battle in which El Cid's son was killed. Muhammad ibn 'A'isha, Yusef's son, whom he had appointed governor of Murcia, succeeded in delivering an effective pounding to the Cid's forces at Alcira; still not capturing the city, but satisfied with the results of his campaigns, Yusef left for his court at Marrakesh, only to return two years later in a new effort to take the provinces of eastern al-Andalus. El Cid had died in the same year, 1099, and his wife Jimena had been ruling until the coming of another Almoravid campaign at the tail end of 1100, led by Yusef's trusted lieutenant Mazdali ibn Tilankan. After a seven-month siege, Alfonso and Jimena, despairing of the prospects of staving off the Almoravids, set fire to the great mosque in anger and abandoned the city. Yusef had finally conquered Valencia achieving dominance over eastern al-Andalus. He receives mention in the oldest Spanish epic Poema del Cid, also known as El Cantar del Mio Cid.

Today historians agree that Pelayo was a local Asturian leader. Neither basque nor visigothic. Muslim sources call it Belay al-Rumí. Pelayo "the Roman" (in opposition to godo, that is to say a ciristianized celtic) . On the other hand, there are no indications of Visigothic domain in Asturias. On the contrary, Astures and Visigoths were still at war only 80 years before.

@@sorrymosquito3897 Those castles were built in tall mountains or elevations for obvious reasons, have a lot of walls whit breechs for archers. Some entrances were in zigzag going up to keep invader tired (having ramps and stairs), also interior was somethimes like that. And including big open areas for catapultes. some castles would force you to go up a bridge above the soil which would go around the castle or alf of it, soldiers would show their side until they tried to reach the gate. (easy targets, slowly moving, falling from the bridge). And the usual Hot water dropping into the entrance. and the huge hole around it (traditionally used in Castles) Well the Arabs castles have similar characteristics to other castles. But they really used the creativity to make them "weard" Well, the guy i mentioned, trew himself to the gate preventing it to fully close, allowing the other guys to lift it up and getting in, but of course they had to face arrows being shoot from tiny holes in walls and water

For the record, I would like to point out some significant inaccuracies in the video: 2:25 What we know about Pelagio of Asturias points out that he was actually a Hispanic-Roman noble from a family with a very probably Asturian background. He was not basque. And the stories about Pelagio descending from a Visigothic king were written centuries later, mainly to strenghthen the position of the Castilian and Leonese monarchies and so as to lend some propagandistic support to the Kingdom of Castille - seen as the "heir" of the old Visigothic Kingdom - by validating in the eyes of the people its wars during the late stage of the muslim presence in the Iberian Peninsula. Also, the borders of the Asturian Kingdom have been drawn too shifted to the east. 4:03 During the period 824-924 a.C., Burgos (and the rest of the county of Castille) remained as a Leonese territory. It was not until the XI century when Sancho III Garcés (King of Navarre) took control of the county of Castille. 5:52 The intervention of Sancho III Garcés in the Kingdom of Leon is still an object of discussion. It is mainly meant nowadays to have been made to support the ruling of child-king Bermudo III (nephew of Sancho III). After the intervention, it was Urraca (mother-in-law of Bermudo III, sister of Sancho III) who assumed the regency of the kingdom, supported by the remaining Leonese nobles who were still loyal to them. With almost entire security, it was therefore the response of a help request based on the existing familial alliance between Urraca and Sancho, not a truly conquest. Also, Bermudo III is not related to the divison of Sancho III's domains among his sons, because he was not actually his grandson; he was son of the first wife of the previous king of Leon (Alfonso V) not a direct descendant of Sancho III. 7:00 After the battle of Sagrajas, Toledo was still held by Alfonso VI - despite he had lost the most part of his army - because the almoravid emir Yusuf ibn Tasufin returned to Africa inmediately when he heard about the dead of his son. Obviously, not such a large territory was lost by Alfonso VI - he almost did not lost any of it, actually. 7:30 The northern Leonese-Portugese border has been drawn too shifted to the north. Finally, I must say I would have liked to watch a bit more about the battle itself, the previous movements of Sancho trying to cross Sierra Morena, the castles attacked before and after the battle, how the french crusaders abandoned the allied army because Alfonso VIII denied them to slaughter the defenders of Calatrava (Spanish are not always the most intolerants, you see), the murder of Muhámmed an-Násir as a result of his complete failure, ... Talking less about the beginnings of the Kingdom of Asturias and more about the expansion of the Almohad Caliphate in the Iberian peninsule, the internal revolts, the disintegration of the Caliphate or a more detailed coment on the battle of Alarcos would have lead to make the content more relevant, too. Although I love your vids, I think you have tried to compress a too long period in just a few minutes, allocating few time for the battle itself and the related events, making this video not so consistent and compelling as others.

They pronounce all Spanish words with a very heavy English accent, but that's natural for someone who doesn't speak Spanish. Theirs is not even the worst, I remember an American speaker pronouncing "de" (in Spanish) as "dee" (in English). Generally, English or German accents sound particularly funny in Spanish, I think it is mostly the English "e" and the English or German "r" (both sound horrible in Spanish, but the German r particularly). Speakers of most other European languages (sans French) can usually roll the "r", so their accents don't sound as funny in Spanish.

I would say based on the people commenting and some bad pronunciations, other than the the animation it was not that well put together. And missing Pelayo as a basque is a very bad error considering the topic

Just a small note, Pelagius is described by most historians as visigothic, not basque; and Asturias as a remnant of the Kingdom of the Visigoths.
@nb94192 жыл бұрын
Nope! Visigoths never had any power in Asturies but the Vandals and then the Suebi. Pelayo would have never been followed if he had been a Visigoths, and, on the other hand, his name is Roman, Pelagius means man of the sea, not Germanic. He must have been a sort of Astur chieftain or nobleman. The Visigoth thing was 'invented' during the Fascist rule to present him as the continuer of the Visigoth Kingdom, but it seems most unlikely.
@spades9681 Жыл бұрын
@@nb9419 Could also have just been invented by Christian monarchs to grant extra legitimacy to their claim over Spain.
@nb9419 Жыл бұрын
@@spades9681, the Visigoth oc ancestry of Pelayu could have been an invention to legitimate his rule and kingdom as a continuity of Visigothic monarchy. But, as I've said, Asturies was Suebi, not Visigoth, and a foreign person ws unlikely to be followed.

LjFJDhs you sound biased af, the Iberians of Spain have definitely intermingled with Maghrebis during Muslim rule of Spain whether you like it or not, it’s a well known fact, your biased opinion won’t change a past history no matter how many times you try to convince yourself that you don’t have anything in common with Maghrebis, I’m not Spanish nor Maghrebi, I just studied history well unlike you

LjFJDhs you just proved me that you don’t know anything about your “own” history, once again your biased opinion won’t change real facts, if you didn’t know Muslims comprised almost 80% of total population of Al Andalusia by 11th century, 5% were Jews and remaining were Mozarabs (Christians). Ethnically majority of Muslims were in fact local Spaniards who converted to Islam and/or had mixed Arab origins who were known in society as Muladies and minority were ethnical Arabs and Berbers, but as long as Muladies were Muslims they had no problem assimilating onto Arabic culture and even having to identify partially as Arabs. Muslim men could marry Christian women very easily because that’s allowed in Islam (something you didn’t know). See I don’t like people (Arabs) who exaggerate the history of al Andalusia in their favor and I also don’t like people like you who try to minimize the history and presence of Arabic/Muslim rule in their biased history views. Only people who study true unbiased history deserve recognition for their work.

Great Video. I lived in Spain for a number of years and traveled all over visiting friends in many cities. The Spanish are very proud of their culture, history, food. Perhaps it is because they lived under Franco for so long, they are taking pride once again. The stories I heard about Franco, and the Siege of Madrid - told to me by people who lived through the battle are pretty harrowing. Wish you would do some more modern day vids on Franco, and post Franco in the 1970s. It is so fascinating. Keep up the good work, I just subscribed!

It is said that Al-Nasir had a elite guard of black africans who were tied by chains, so they'd fight to death. So when the navarrese knights charged and defeated them, they took the chains as a symbol of victory and added them to their flag. es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escudo_de_Navarra

It is a shame that Fernando unites Spain with lies and the signing of a covenant from the Pope that he will not kill Muslims, but if the Muslims rejected the covenant and did not sign it and demanded war, then you would have known the outcome of the war, especially since the Ottoman Empire was ready to provide support

Like the video, short but sweet kinda like the reconquista in 5 minutes (or 13 😝) the only criticism I have to say is that you could work on your pronunciation a little more. It’s a pet issue I guess and I hate to be that guy but as a Spanish speaker it can be off putting when Spanish words or names are mispronounced especially when the subject matter is indeed Spanish history. That’s all for the rest I thoroughly enjoyed video and you’ve got yourself a new subscriber! Keep it up!
