The Battle of Diu is regarded by some historians as one of the most pivotal battles in world history. The Portuguese sailed in against an enemy that had them outgunned and outnumbered. Yet despite that, Francisco de Almeida need for revenge was greater still. The outcome of this battle would forever change the world.

The history of the early 1500s Portuguese armadas is more incredible than science fiction. Thank you for your outstanding work in presenting these stories to all of us!

I’m a history buff and this is my favourite KZbin channel. Firstly the story is told in a colourful fashion and the graphic presentation is outstanding. Next it is a series of events that does not have a big profile in the English speaking world. A journey of discovery for me, as exciting as any Hollywood blockbuster. Well done and thank you.

Never learned any of this in Portuguese school. Just that Portugal 🇵🇹 conquered a few places here and there and had a few trading outposts. Had no idea Portugal managed to rule all of the Indian Ocean for a hundred years. Didn't know anything about the war with the Mamluks and the Turks. The Portuguese really do a terrible job of self promotion, especially their history. It's like everything is a secret in Portugal. The biggest waves on the planet, right off shore in Nazaré, were completely unknown even to the Portuguese, until an American came to surf there. And imagine all the history and architecture that was lost in the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755. Portugal needs foreigners to tell the stories of the Portuguese. Well done, sir.

You kind of learned this history via poetry books, rather than via history books: Também farão Mombaça, que se arreia De casas sumptuosas e edifícios, Co ferro e fogo seu queimada e feia, Em pago dos passados malefícios. A nobre ira lhe vinha prometendo Que o sangue fará dar pelos giolhos Nas inimigas naus; senti-lo-á o Nilo, Podê-lo-á o Indo ver e o Gange ouvi-lo. - Luís de Camões [Os Lusíadas, Canto X]

Crazy to think that in 1509, England and Scotland would still be two separate countries for a century, and we were still 98 years from Jamestown; yet tiny Portugal was all over the near east, Brazil, etc. I guess I just find it wild how the UK started so late and colonized half the world in such a relatively short period of time.
