Technically, Magnus' dark bishop wasn't a sacrifice; he offered a trade for a knight.

Just a quick note of appreciation for your videos that I follow often, this was quite brilliant. Here Magnus is not doing the fine conservative play I think of being more his style. All the more amazing his age. I practice a relatively aggressive aproach but often fall short where Tal, and Bobby almost always pull it off. Keep up the nice work, maybe I'll get the nerve to play a blitz with you down the road. I'm only a 1640 in rapid. Cheers in any case! David Askew in France.

@Metagross31

Ah, ok I got it. after Bxg5, black can go for Qe8 followed by Qh5, forking both bishops. And if you try to save your DSB by playing Bxg5 Qe8 Be3 Qh5 your LSB is still trapped and the Q next to our King on an open file with the f3 pawn looks really scary. The best continuation, if you go for the pawn is according to Stockfish Bxg5 Qe8 Kh1 Qh5 Rg1 Qxh3 Rg3 Qh5 Qa4 Ng6 Rag1 Rf5 and a repetition of Qe8+ Rf8 Qa4 Rf5 After all, Stockfish doesn't even recommend going for the pawn, since you lose your LSB anyways. It's suggestion isn't Kh1 either, but Re1 (at least on my slow PC at a not so deep depth).

Yes very good question, and I am a bit gutted I didn't go into that possibillity. I will add an embedded comment. From what i can gather, the two loose bishops here of White's mean that Qe8 is very powerful (also the threat as well is Qg6 pinning the bishop to the king) as this engine analysis shows (with the threat of Qh5 - also really embarassing the Bishop on h3) : Magnus Carlsen - Dennis Rylander, Salongernas IM-turnering 2003 r1b1qrk1/ppp1p1bp/4P3/2PPn1B1/8/2N2p1B/PP3P1P/R2Q1RK1 w - - 0 1 Analysis by Stockfish 5 64 SSE4.2: 1. = (0.00): 17.Kh1 Qh5 18.Rg1 Qxh3 19.Rg3 Qf5 2. -/+ (-0.80): 17.Qd2 Qh5 18.Kh1 Ng6 19.Rae1 Qxh3 20.Rg1 Qh5 21.Rg3 a6 22.d6 cxd6 23.cxd6 exd6 24.e7 Re8 25.Qd5+ Kh8 26.Qf7 Bh3 27.Rd1 Bg4 28.Bf6 Bxf6 29.Qxf6+ Kg8 30.Qd4 3. -/+ (-1.21): 17.Qd4 Qg6 18.Kh1 Qxg5 19.Rg1 Qf4 20.Qxf4 Rxf4 21.Nb5 Nd3 22.Raf1 Kh8 23.Nxc7 Rb8 24.d6 exd6 25.Rxg7 Kxg7 26.cxd6 Rh4 27.d7 Bxd7 28.exd7 Rxh3 29.Ne6+ Kf6 30.d8Q+ Rxd8 31.Nxd8 Rh4 4. -+ (-2.02): 17.Bh4 Qh5 18.Qa4 Ng6 19.Kh1 Nxh4 20.Bg4 Qg5 21.Rg1 Ng6 22.Bxf3 Qd2 23.Ne4 Qxb2 24.Rab1 Qe5 25.Rg5 Qf4 26.Rg3 b6 27.c6 a5 28.Qc2 Ba6 29.Be2 Bxe2 30.Qxe2 Rad8 31.Qd3 Qe5 5. -+ (-1.63): 17.Qa4 Qg6 18.Kh1 Qxg5 19.Rg1 Qd2 20.Qe4 Ng6 21.d6 cxd6 22.Bf5 Rxf5 23.Qxf5 Qf4 24.Qh3 Bxc3 25.bxc3 Qf6 26.cxd6 Bxe6 27.Qg3 Kh8 28.dxe7 Nxe7 29.Qg5 Qxg5 30.Rxg5

Its an amazing game by Magnus. However, I'm pretty proud of myself and my engine actually agrees with me (Stockfisch on a pretty good system) that on move 17 after Qd4, Bxe6, saccing the bishop is a pawn advantage for black believe it or not! The line would be: Bxe6 18. Bh6 Bxh6 19. Qxe5 Bd7 20. Bxg4 Bg7 21. Qe4 Bxg4 22. Qxg4 Qc8 23. Qg3 and Black is still better at depth 30 by roughly a pawn!

kingscrusher Looks like my engine had some kind of problem. After restarting it I seem to get the correct numbers like you said. But I still think that this line is very interesting and might have saved black here. It's certainly better than the game continuation and I thought it was an interesting idea in a difficult position. :) Thanks for the answer anyway.

I asked myself why the Bxe6 move was not considered in sidelines. It's easy to show the amazing game Carlsen played, but you can't assume black won't try "everything" in order to save himself, even for a lost endgame. And it may be that Carlsen calculations weren't 100% perfect, just much better than his opponent's.

I've got a question... What if 16. Bxg5 Qe8 17. Be3 ? (5:55) In the note it sais Qe8 has Qg6, but after 17 Be3 Qg6+ 18Kh1, there isn't a inmediate menace to the king because of the bishop in h3. Please tell me how would be black's continuation after 16.Bxg5 Qe8 17. Be3 (or Bc1, if prefered)

I was perplexed why the mate I thought I found wasn't the mate shown, but it works for sure you can check it with an engine if you want proof. 1. Qh8+ Kf7 2. Rh7#. Turns out there was yet another faster way that I didn't spot until I checked it with the engine which is after 1. Rh8+ 2. Kf7, instead of 2. Rh7 2. Kf8 3. Qg7#, simply 2. dxe6#. I'm sure Magnus saw all of these as well but I just thought it was interesting to point out.

Rg1. 3 attackers on g4. If gh3 then qxe5 threatening mate with qxg7. Rf7 is the only option but bh6 triple attacks the bishop. Qf8 could be played but then u can attack the original bishop with qe6 pining the rook to the king. It's a good idea that winds up being devastating for black.

when black take the withe-square bishop i think that wolud be much more stronger make an intermedian move discovering the atack on withe queen with Ng6 or Nd7, the withe squere bishop of withe is trap so black can capture anytime. i thnk this atack really could be defended but its really on tal style. :) even when sacrifice the second bishop can be defenden in the variation of bishop g7 and rook f6(i think that rook f6 is stronger but in bishop g7 after rook sacrifice for the bishop knight e4 is weak to King f8 (rook is defended by pwan on e7 so queen f8 only cut the scape for the king) i think here is stronger rook g1 instead of kinght e4. after rook g1 king must move to f8 becouse king h8 is losing to knigh e4 now with the idea of knight g5 iwht the powerfull atack on h7 maybe sacrifing the knight for the pawn an then the check mate of Queen h5 and the idea of kight f7 check mate. so king must move to f8 an d then queen h5 is very strong, in this poin black would be checkmated in three moves. but black have defence before all that. black can defend with rook f6. i think that kig to g7 is a weak move, stronger would be Bishop g7.

The Nb5 move is crushing? Oh, yes, the threat is crushing, Nc7. But what if black answers Kh7? Now WQ is "en prise", and in order to keep the pressure on g6 the only square (I can see) is g4, but this allows g5 by black (WQ can check, but Nc7 now "only" wins a R (in fact, it deprives W of a good N for a bad R. Nb5 - under this point of view - is not that good (I can be wrong, of course). Ne4 was "the" plan: bring reinforcements into the fry. Concretely: after Ne4, Kh7 was not possible anymore due to Ng5+, Kg7, Nf7 - and this is crushing, much more of Nb5.

Interesting game indeed. The title gives away the moves, tho. Obviously you will sac the bishops, since the title says so. But nevertheless - video worth watching. Thanks KC.

At 6:06, can't white just take the pawn g5 with his bishop? I'm sure Carlsen had the whole idea mapped out in his head, but it still looks like a free pawn to me and the g file still gets opened up.

Fellows, but what's wrong with 16. Bxg5 Qe8 17. Rg1 My computer evaluates this as +3.3, which (although indeed slower than the actual game continuation), should still lead to a very big plus for white, more than enough to win the game. I sincerely doubt that Magnus would still play 16. Kh1 these days, as he evolved into a calculator, rather than spectacular player.

Well, kind of false publicity, the second bishop move (Bh6) is not really a sacrifice but a simple exchange (Qxe5)...
@Godl1ked
@Godl1ked 6 жыл бұрын
The reason "sacrifice" comes to mind in this situation, is because bishop pair is almost always stronger than knights or mixed, also, bishops make it much much easier to mate the black king in a vicious attack, also - they're superb in endgame. So when you're attacking the black king and you're losing bishops, you're losing "trump cards" that may make the mating of the black king much easier. Which essentially means, in order to be "brave enough" to lose them, you have to have counted ~12to15 moves ahead, and you have to know, that you won't be needing them. That is what every "sound" sacrifice is all about, and Tal's and Nezhmedtinov's sacrifices were just like that. It's just an exchange of energy for different purposes.

C'mon mate...reminiscent to Mikhail Tal u say?? now I do appreciate that Magnus is an awesome playerin his own right but he is defs no Mikhail Tal. I do agree Magnus played an extraordinary game especially for his age and is phenomenal in his own right and I take nothing away from him or his achievements. But I do think its a bit rich to compare him to Mihail Tal who holds a positive win/loss record against Fischer and who many people believe would've been the greatest ever if he had looked after his health. Tal even had "the great Kasparov" lose by running out of time after setting him to many problems to figure out on the board in his last game. I mean no disrespect, I love your videos and appreciate your thorough analysis of such memorable games and I will sub and will continue to watch your content but imo Magnus is Magnus and Tal is Tal ✌PEACE✌
