I was a Sophmore that year. It was an AWESOME drill. We came in first in music from all judges and would have made it to the finals that night had it not been for 1 marching judge who obviously had something against military bands. I think we were placed in the single digits from two judges and almost at the end from the 1. Top 7 went on, we came in 9th :(

Next year, UIL will have a separate marching contest for military marching bands. Spring Hill (4A) finished 5th in state last year and White Oak (3A) finished 4th at state this year. The talent is there. It is sad that military style band went into state competitions with a handicap before even taking the field.

stunningly beautiful - from an admirer of 6-5 military marching bands. I marched it myself, and taught it. Beautiful!

KM4B was HUGE in the 1990's! That's a great advantage musically. This is probably the biggest that the Kingwood band got. Very impressive!

I cant believe this was almost 20 years ago!! I remember this performance. The sound of the crowd at the end....we thought we had won it all and then the disappointment of 9th :-(
@jasongates68943 жыл бұрын
We got something like second to last place in "Musicianship" I think. We also didn't score very high is the marching section either. Clearly the judges had no idea how to properly mark Military bands.

I remember this performance at NAMMB...lol, one person did a 'to the rear' early, and there was a hush in the crowd cuz of one mistake...everyone was worried...lol

I agree!! I was there as well. It was my junior year. It was a wonderful experience. We sure did work hard to get there.

Wow! I just happened to stumble upon this clip b/c I'm from Texas. I've marched in high school and college in this style as well as high-stepping and this is an AMAZING performance. I didn't expect the visuals on the field but I guess that was the director's goal...element of surprise. Well done, ESPECIALLY for a high school band.

Great memories! Everyday from 3 to 5 on the hot blacktop avoiding parked cars, high G's on the clarinet, and yelling at people to get into the diagonals was all worth it. The best part was watching this on those tiny charter bus tvs on the way home.

I remember going to Waco for the State Finals this year and when I arrived the parking lot was vacant and trash scattered all around....I had confused the days and arrived a day after the contest all the way from Houston....so, I did not get to see this performance.

Looks great, but it's not the first time that Kingwood was in the State marching competition...I marched there with KM4B in 1988. That was also the first year of NAMMB competition at Texas A&M when Kingwood won Best in Class, Best Overall, and Best Performance of Military March Music.

It's taken Longview a few years to get this big again since the 80s. We will be marching a solid 304 this year.
@DenversMac8 жыл бұрын
CrushingSkies whitehouse still bigger but you didn't march 304 at contest
@JeffPhillips17 жыл бұрын
I'd say Whitehouse's rather unfortunate performance at contest last Fall is pretty much the epitome of bigger isn't always better, although I'd add "and sometimes it's much, much worse" because...I mean, seriously, is anyone actually delusional enough to think the Whitehouse band is even the slightest bit better than absolutely mediocre bordering on marginal?
@DenversMac7 жыл бұрын
Jeff P that also goes for Longview with there 2014 performance. When they DIDNT deserve a 1 by any means and people were booing when they announced a first division because the band literally fell apart. Whitehouse didn't do to well because they had to relearn drill this year after the administrators made a mistake and left a few people off of failed list so the band had to relearn all of there drill in a week.
@JeffPhillips17 жыл бұрын
Oh, and how about that little snippet they close the first half of their performance with. If I were marching against them at contest and heard that low brass I would've pooped my pants in fear. I mean...WOW...go low brass!
@DenversMac7 жыл бұрын
Jeff P we don't march "against them" at contest. UIL Region Contest is a band against the standards that UIL dictates. You get a 1-5 (5 being the worst). There is no competition of rankings between each band and after each bands performance is when the judges give the ratings. It is against UIL Rules to a band ratings after another band has begun playing.

Fun story: this performance ran long and if they started the clock early we were in danger of disqualification. Listen to how quick the drum majors kick us off at the end. Mr Ward told us that the drum majors are going to look at the clock and if it is too low they would blow one LONG wistle and if we heard that we were to not march off, but get off as fast as safely possible. We were all hoping to get to run off the field. ALAS, two whistles.

certainly... I only name about 2-3 East Tx Band Directors that actually had some imagination.... Randy Kiser, George Little, Jason Steele. I’m calling out for the sake of God Mr.Chris Smith from Center changes some things with his band. They could certainly give 4A a little more competition.
