I agree to a point. Kinkajou doesn't really need to do anything other than just be herself. You said so yourself that she's the kooky optimist, and I think that's really all she needed to be. Also, she DID have a reason to stop Darkstalker: He hurt her friends. She doesn't need anymore reason than that. If you do do this again, Prince Smolder is my suggestion.

I'm glad you bring up how random it was for Kinkajou to finish Darkstalker off. It felt underwhelming.
@pyronuke47687 ай бұрын
I also thought it was rather convenient that Kinkajou was suddenly capable of writing a complex enchantment with enough clarity to satisfy the notoriously picky wordplay needed to pull one off, after she spent half the arc in a coma and most of the rest gallivanting about the countryside with no indication she'd been working on her penmanship, after Moon Rising showed us she was a beginner-level reader. The scene is pretty insistent this is Kinkajou's accomplishment, but if you stop to think about it for more than a few minutes the timeframes don't add up.

There actually was a reason Kinkajou was the one that got the kill shot on Darkstalker, Poetic Irony His entire mindset was that he was the most powerful dragon in the world He had Mind reading, he had Foresight, he had magic, he was the one that lead the world into a glorious future... AND he was defeated by a bubbly ball of fluff that no one took seriously
@dudotolivier63636 ай бұрын
It's true that is an indeed ironic thing, and it's actually a thing that others medias franchise have done as well. That a relatively minor and comedic character is the one to mainly or completely defeat THE evil guy of the story. And that indeed, there some messages to get from this. However, in most of these others medias, there kind of foreshadowing and developpement for such end and situation. Here, it really coming as a twist which seem kind mean at the last minutes. So, it does not work entirely like this trope does in others said franchises.

Personal bias here, but I would love to see more about Hailstorm. Though I totally get that he doesn't do much of anything in books 7, 9 (epilogue), 10, or him being mentioned in 14... and what little he does do, either as himself or as Pyrite, is more as a means to progress someone else's story rather than his own. I hope he appears in Arc Four.

I think there was also confirmed that she claim, however, she will never get her own book. So, apparently, Tui was fully aware of most of the things Charcoal bring up in this video and acknowledge Kinkajou, while not a bad character and a decent one, would not be a good one as a protagonnist for a (main) book.

@pyronuke47687 ай бұрын
I think Kinkajou is an enjoyable character, but agree she's kinda one-note and works better in a support role. There is one inconsistently with Kinkajou I have always had a hard time getting over, and that is she *wrote* the spell that defeated Darkstalker herself. It's treated like a big character moment for her, but if you stop to think about it, when did she have the time to learn to write like that? Animus magic is notoriously picky about the wording of a spell, of which Kinkajou's was never revealed in it's entirety to us the audience. Arc 2 takes place over a timeframe of roughly three weeks, most of which Kinkajou spent gallivanting around the continent or in a coma and there's no indication she was working on her penmanship in that time. Moon Rising was the only time she spent at the Academy, which book makes clear Kinkajou is a beginner-level at reading, meaning she's only had about four or five days of formal education since the arc started. The only thing I can think of is if Turtle or Moon or Foeslayer wrote it for her, but then that undercuts the whole moment the scene is playing up. When the audience is tasked with filling in the gaps themselves like it was a homework assignment to make sense of a character's actions, It's usually an indicator of inconsistent and/or lazy writing.

Going to have to disagree with you on this one. You have some good points but your rating is based on the false assumption that Kinkajou is annoying to the reader. I find her ADHD style of passionate enthusiasm really endearing. Importantly, though, she is not being enthusiastic all the time. She is quite capable of having normal conversations and behaving reasonably. Her enthusiasm lightens the mood through comedy but also through wholesomeness and general positive vibes. It’s not joke after joke and, as you mentioned, she does not fill the role of incompetent comedic relief character. Her impulsive and passionate personality also allows her to be bloodthirsty and brutal without contradicting her character or taking away from her kind, friendly nature. Overall, I think its a good balance. (Particularly for a dragon character.) She definitely has more than one badass moment, as she heroically participated in Glory’s escape in book 3, fighting full grown dragons and using her death spit far before any of the other (modern) Rainwings in the rainforest. On top of that, Kinkajou does a lot of really important things, playing important roles throughout the book. Heroics in both night kingdoms, her role in supporting and stabilizing Moon by befriending her in book6, for example. While much of Kinkajou’s internal Arc took place in book 3, she has not recovered from her captivity and the revelation that no one missed her when she was gone. You can clearly that trauma, though Tui slipped much of it into subtext. From Moon’s perspective Kinkajou is full of happy thoughts by day, but if you pay attention, her dreams are nightmares of captivity and many of her thoughts feel like she is trying to force a sense of happiness to cover darker emotions. Moon is explicitly pointed out to not be good at seeing the deeper subtext and having a tendency to take surface thoughts at face value. Her interactions with Quibli and Winter are great examples of this. Quibli can see deeper into others than she can because she understands how minds work. Yes, Kinkajou is happy and positive thinking, but underneath those surface emotions is a some serious hidden depth. I completely understand the sentiment of not needing a PoV book for kinkajou. We get her surface level thoughts just by her being in a scene so much of her PoV benefit is already there. However, there are some reasons it may have worked better than what we got. Primary, the ending with nightstalker. The ending had a lot of issues, but many of the issues with Kinkajou’s role in that ending would be fixed if it was a Kinkajou PoV. If Kinkajou’s PoV had followed Kinkajou’s journey to the nightwing kingdom, it could have focused on her trauma and having her overcome the nightwings/darkstalker would have made a lot more sense, even if it simply set up for her being the ultimate one to trick Darkstalker after Quibli failed to make him see reason. Consider that kinkajou just woke up to 1. the faction that had previously kidnapped and tortured her now was an active threat to her friends and community 2. Glory, was a target, being the rainwing queen. This threatens Kinkajou’s role model, and the only one who came and cared that she was missing 3. Darkstalker is unable to take her seriously, because of magic, playing into her trauma of being forgotten 4. She had to sneak into the night kingdom, and love among all the dragons who tortured her, bringing that trauma to the forefront of her mind. 5. An animus dragon just twisted her mind, and she cannot be sure if her thoughts are even her own. With Kinkajou following Turtle in Turtle’s PoV we get a couple comments venting frustration about her thoughts not being hers. But with a Kinkajou PoV at that part of the story… it would be a harrowing mess of trauma and stress, with her constantly second guessing her thoughts, suppressing PTSD flashbacks, and desperately trying to reassure Turtle while struggling to maintain her positive attitude underneath. Instead, we only get glimpses into Kinkajou’s struggle, and much of Quibli’s story becomes pointless as Darkstalker is too powerful for any of the queens to act against and the threat to Thorn is summarily executed by Darkstalker. (He needed another book and the payoff of the other tribes coming to help the Icewings thanks to the earrings). But all that I just mentioned is still there, just much more of it is contained in subtext. Kinkajou’s heroics occur throughout that part of the arc. Not just her attacking Darkstalker, but when she tricks him by pretending his spell affected her, remaining in that situation waiting for a time to strike, as well as the final trick (which absolutely makes sense, Darkstalker was much too far gone to give up power voluntarily, as seen in the Legends prequel). Add some interactions with the nightwings while undercover, and that could be a whole book. Honestly, anything below B tier is a disgrace to this character. Personally, I think you’re just upset that Quibli didnt get more screentime in book 6.

Darkstalker isn't killed by Kinkajou. He's just transformed physically and his memories erased. And another name is given to him. He's more under cover oblivious to himself than anything else. All of that is very different from an actual death. An actual death is... well the character just dying by falling apart on the ground or its body desintagrating into dust, or something like that. Even if we consider what happen to him as a ressurection, that don't change it's still the same person, just no more aware to what his was before. As far I we, when a phoenix die and ressurect right after, it is entirely reconized by everone its the same ones that died minutes before, and he have just rebirth. Same for Jesus from the Bible, but I don't want to include or speak about religious stuff here, in case. If think people will clearly get my overall point. So, just saying that using the word "kill" or "killshot" isn't correct in this situation. Just saying "defeat" or "defeating" is enough in itself.

LOL im dissapointed that u didn't mention winter- if tui hadn't ruined him by making him side with his toxic family, that is. Darkstalker brainwashed him into worshipping him, killed his aunt, hurt his tribe, etc. He was also a great option, among the many others u mentioned.
@pyronuke47683 ай бұрын
Totally. Winter is probably the arc 2 protagonist who has been affected the most by Darkstalker's actions (Hailstorm was transformed using Darkstalker's magic, Winter was the one to find and free Forslayer, he was put under a spell to make him more docile, and it was his tribe being the one targeted by Darkstalker's plague) and he gets tossed aside so casually by the second half of the book because the romantic subplot needs you to be rooting against him. Like, he was already sliding into irrelevant background character the past few books, but this one straight up throws him under the bus. He is so inconsistent here you can tell Tui had no idea what to do with him.
