Excellent insight into Gummo. You guys get it. It was a lonely gig back in the '90s trying to defend this film when it came out. Even critics I respected completely flatlined with bad takes. I avoided it for awhile based on that and then saw it and was really blown away and moved by it. Nice talk, fellas.
@ahobimo732 Жыл бұрын
Saw Gummo in theater when it came out. It affected me deeply. It was so depressing, but it never felt like Korine was mocking or condescending the characters. It was just brutal, unflinching honesty. Ultimately it was a staggering human tragedy.

My favorite film of all time, there is a strange beauty to it (that y'all touch on) that so many miss, it isn't pure nihilism, it's... life, just honest life.
@josephineblahblah597211 ай бұрын
I honestly find it so beautiful the closeness between the charecters .The love between the sisters ,the mother hand washing her sons hair and the respectful and kind way the father and son talk about his passed mother .I think it shows genuine true connection that you cant find with wealthy "acceptable" families and friends.

My feelings on Gummo are so mixed. All the criticisms are basically right; it's Harmony Korine--an ironic rich kid--making mean spirited misery porn about poverty. It's not "real" or "honest," because it's too cartoonish in its negativity to be honest. (Chinese restaurants don't actually sell cat meat in America. That's just not something that actually happens. etc.) But from an audio-visual standpoint, it's an incredibly well made and evocative film. And a lot of the acting is so natural.
@NormanFinkelstein9863Ай бұрын
Kind of agree. Middle class viewers - like myself - just want to believe this is realism, to experience this as true. But its a story, a series of stories that are invented to make a meaning and an emotional experience. The fact that a certain audience chooses to suspend disbelief and accept this as life-life, real or authentic is a testament to the author's ability to match artistry to our perception.
@eliottsmith690815 күн бұрын
I see both of your points but to think there are not people who actually live like this is pretty nuts. Who cares who tells their story? Obviously he told it quite damn well and was very effective. It's like this whole ridiculous thing going around now about cultural appropriation like a Chinese person can't sell fried Chicken or any other soul food because it's not from their heritage.

The characters of Gummo are basically the untouchables of America. People who are lost in these dead rural towns, with no resources and no prospects. Harmony is great at artistically capturing these people on the fringes, humanizing them, and finding something beautiful where most might see something grotesque. Also, it's funny to think of Korine as "woke", since he's such a big fan of Al Jolson.😂 We've all got problematic favs i guess.

Saw this not too long after it came out. It's pretty straight forward on the themes it's trying to portray - a little in the nose, but does a much better job than most films of demonstrating what white trash/poverty looks like. Difficult to do, and not exactly a joy to watch.

I contend that the kissing in the rain, in the pool was Bunny Boy's reward for finding Foot Foot's corpse. It's a happy end of sorts. In spite of the transactional nature, this scene is in sharp contrast with the (false) transactional undertones in the scene where the dirty old man lures the girls into his car to find Foot Foot but not really. I'm not sure if it's consent, the result (of actually finding her) or the smaller and the reverse age gap that makes one transaction seem wholesome and the other vile but it's there, and like you said, Foot Foot ties all three story lines together. If this was a sub-genre (let's call it Intimate Squalor) I could point to one other movie that would fit in it: Ugly, Dirty And Bad (1976) by Ettore Scola, a brilliant Italian movie.
