I'm so glad to hear that. I get a lot of flack for doing mine early. It is such a relief to not worry about decorating last minute. Besides, it gets you in the spirit and then you can focus on shopping, to-do list, entertaining, etc. And I really do a lot of decorating. Every room, including bedrooms, gets decorated. So it is just self-defeating to put all that work in and take it back down right away. Mine is up to at least February 2nd or mid-February.

I have no problem with decorating for Christmas in November, but for me, I wait until after Thanksgiving. I love fall and do extensive decorating for the season. I want my harvest decorations to take center stage through Thanksgiving then I switch for Christmas. I spend a week settings up Christmas and it’s always worth it. I still have the whole month of December to enjoy the holidays.

You could not have said that better. I'm the exact same way. Fall and Christmas decorating are neck and neck. I go beyond all out for both. And Fall is up for 3 months. I start decorating the first weekend in September. Christmas is only up for a month. Come January 1, it comes down, St Patrick's Day decorations go up and it stays that way until the end of March. And I decorate for that just as extensively.

Hi Rebecca, I actually start my Christmas decorating in October. Why, do you ask? I worked for an interior designer decorating her store for Christmas for more than 10 years. Since retiring, I'm 71, (72 this November). It would take me 2 weeks, some over , nighters, to complete for Open House the first or second weekend of November. Also, I decorated homes and businesses for Christmas, therefore, if I didn't get my home done that early, it would never get done and I wouldn't have any time to enjoy them. Now, I've gotten into that habit and have continued it. I decorate that way for all the seasons, although this year will be much different since I have been in the hospital with bronchial pneumonia and having to deal with a diagnosis of asthma. I'm having a hard time adjusting to the fact that I may not get to do any decorating at all this Christmas season. I love all your decorating, videos, especially, my favorite, CHRISTMAS. I love Christmas and I put a lot of effort and thought into it, as I know you do also. Looking forward to seeing your videos this year. God bless.

After all these years Rebecca, I was hoping you’d have figured out the importance of Autumn🎃 🍁and especially Thanksgiving 🦃🍁. You could add so much to your channel, by focusing on the beauty of AUTUMN 🍂 AND THANKSGIVING season, instead of skipping over it.

I couldn't agree more, although by the looks of the comment section, we are clearly outnumbered. I love to do things ahead of time when I can, but I can't tell you how sad it makes my heart to see us as a culture move further and further away from the incredible richness of the Thanksgiving holiday. I thought it was just the retail stores, but to see someone as widely followed as Rebecca actively push people to completely skip it without so much as a "here's how to do some things in advance without overlooking Thanksgiving" is downright heartbreaking. Honestly, it's a huge, huge loss for us as a society & fewer and fewer actually acknowledge that loss, at the same time more and more justify it as good (like in this video). You would think someone like Rebecca would understand spending extended, focused time on gratitude, and fostering that focus with decor during November would lead to greater peace of heart & mind in December than early decorating. I would really like it if the US could be like Canada & move Thanksgiving to October....
@rebeccavaughn889710 ай бұрын
About Christmas decorating in November: I think it depends on two things 1) How much you enjoy the fall/thanksgiving time 2) Whether or not you’re going to host Thanksgiving at your home If you really love fall decor, decorating early for Christmas might make it feel like you’re skipping Thanksgiving and missing out on valuable pumpkin time. And if you’re have a lot of guests over for Thanksgiving, it could look “off” if the whole house is decked out in Winter Wonderland and Jungle Bells. I think everyone needs to find what works best for them. I tend to do extra fall cleaning in November, so putting up a Christmas tree would just be too much work in one month.

Maybe you could fase that tree trough the different holidays. Halloween : pumpkins, witches, lots of orange, green and purple Thanksgiving: keep the pumpkins , just switch out the green and purple for metallic browns and golds (fall colours) Christmas : take out the pumpkins and anything brights orange, but keep the luxury browns and golds. New Year’s Eve, add some silvers, maybe extra tinsel to simulate fireworks You only have to really put up decorations once, and with little alterations every few weeks, you might start to love the unusual tree again. Don’t think of it as a black Christmas tree, but as a flexible Holliday tree.

My mother and I were obsessed with properly fluffing the tree, deeply seating the ornaments within the branches, and always adding an extra string of lights - all in order to create a more 3-dimensional, richly dressed, yet still natural-looking tree. We aimed for a look that made us feel like we were in a fairytale woodland, decorated by the pixies for Christmas. It's silly, honestly; but for us, the holidays were a time to express that magical, childlike wonder that still sparks within our hearts. Now, I continue to fuss over the decor in my Mother's memory. But I have learned one major lesson about Xmas decorating: Chilling out and de-stressing the decorating process is The Most essential aspect to holiday decorations. In past years, I was frustrated when my husband and kids had little interest in decorating. I was annoyed to have to decorate the whole house either entirely on my own, or else with eye-rolling, sighing assistance from whatever family member I could rope into helping. Ultimately, I realized I was killing the spirit of childlike wonder and fun that I had been attempting to create in my home. So now, I decorate for me. I start as early as I feel like, so that I can take my time and be as fussy as I wish over things like fluffing the tree and tilting the bubble lights at the perfect angle to maintain maximum bubbling. I decorate as much or as little as is fun for me that year. And then I stop. I'd rather leave half of my decorations in the basement, than decorate my house thoroughly but have a grumpy, exhausted experience while doing so. One thing I really love about your videos is that you give excellent, practical advice, without judgment. You often emphasize that if a particular style or theme makes us happy, then who cares if it is out-dated or considered a decorating mistake? Your advice is for those who are wanting to enjoy the art and process of interior design. It's not meant to make us feel like we're just Wrong, or our homes are ugly. Thank you so much for that chill vibe and your frequent reminders that we should not feel self-conscious about things we love. So, my Xmas decorating observations are meant in that same spirit. I have so much more fun when my process is less like a giant To-Do list or Major Event Production Schedule, and more about having fun with my holiday decorations - but only until the moment it stops being fun. Thank you for this fun video! It is a delight to see how much Christmas decor you have packed away with such great organizational skills. I feel much less self-conscious about my excessive holiday china and lights when I see you so unabashedly displaying yours. 🙂

You said to put the ornaments deep into the tree. I would add lights to that. Years ago I got to help decorate a couple of trees at the Festival of Trees in Portland, OR. We had roughly 2500 lights on each 7 foot tree and we wrapped each branch down to the trunk. Those trees absolutely glowed from the inside out and they totally stood out from all the other trees. You don't have to put that many lights on your tree, but putting the lights deep in the tree will make the whole thing come alive. EDIT: You did mention it later in the video

I’ve always started the day after Thanksgiving for decorating the house - no room is missed. I start with my Woodland themed room and move on, doing one room - sometimes two - in a day. The living room is done last. Santa is the them bc that’s where we open gifts. Our tree is a fresh cut tree, so the earliest it goes up is usually the first weekend of December. By New Year’s Day, it’s ready to come down! I just reverse my decorating, and un-decorate until I’m reach the Woodland. I tend to leave that a little bit longer, bc it fits the winter season. This year, though, I’ve decided to start sooner, either this 2nd week of Nov, or next week. I’m not getting any younger (70), and I don’t want to rush or stress myself. 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

#7 is my favorite! I used to be that person that waited till after thanksgiving. You are right. I was burnt out trying to decorate with the rush. Now I start Nov 1 and get to enjoy my 5 Christmas trees a little longer.

i remember spending SO much time fluffing our trees as a kid, and its tedious work (which is why my parents made us kids do it) but holy heck it makes it look so beautiful! I never not fluff

I used to be a day after Christmas decorator, but now that I am a mom and work 40 hours a week, I learned you can't enjoy Christmas if you wait to decorate. I 100% agree, you have to start decorating in November.

I can hardly wait for your Christmas videos. I really start getting excited around this time of year waiting on your videos. As someone has already mentioned, your the Queen of Christmas decorating.

And November decorating leaves plenty of time for Celebrating the ONLY reason we celebrate at all. The birth of Christ. So leaving time for church, prayers, the Nativity story is most Important. Let's be sure to invite Christ to HIS birthday party.

I’ve already started our cards, shopping is nearly done, and our plans for dinner are tentatively set. Decorating will start on Nov. 15 by clearing out decor and getting decorated by the week after Thanksgiving. We travel from WV to NJ for Thanksgiving dinner with my son and his children and his son and grands. We usually take all the gifts for everyone in NJ with us because we can’t travel after Thanksgiving. This gives us the opportunity to enjoy Christmas in WV with each other and close friends. BTW this planning has really worked for me for YEARS.

Oh my god, so much stuff! Just looking at it all feels so overwhelming to me. I’m not a Xmas fanatic, seems crazy to need a big house to store stuff. I just decorate with a simple tree and it never takes more than 1-2 hr to get it setup or taken down after xmas. But to each their own of course.

I started Christmas decorating before Thanksgiving several years ago. My family thinks I’m nuts but I’m in charge of all the details for Christmas. I want to be able to enjoy the holiday. Are there any other mothers, daughters,spouses with me?

I started implementing your Christmas design principles when I discovered you in 2017. My house never looked better and all my family said "What happened to mom?" (Snowflakes from the ceiling!)

Thrilled to see what you have in store AND how you "store" what you have in store. THANK you. Also.....I have a great idea (for me) to make the entire season a wee bit better. Starting with my FALL decorating I keep a somewhat woodsy feel so that I can actually create a base for decorating and then just switch out or add things after Thanksgiving. The garland will go up for fall but then the foliage changes from Harvest to Christmas but the base items are already placed. This alleviates having to totally transform my entire house from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Maybe that's what everyone already does and I'm late to the party but I'l going to try that. I'd LOVE to see your fall decorations or maybe you don't do them? Just not enough time....either way, LOVE YOU.

Since I started watching your Christmas decorating videos about 5 years ago, everything about Christmas has been elevated and so much more joyous in my home! I start thoroughly cleaning at the end of October and then plan out my decorating and get to work! It is so beautiful by Thanksgiving and I have so much less stress. I actually started having a Christmas party for all of our friends every year and I host my family for Christmas every year as well ! Thank you so much for sharing your videos and helping to make our Christmases so beautiful, special and enjoyable every year!

Could you do a video for us on all the different unusual places to put garland? I do not have a fireplace nor a beautiful winding staircase. But I love Garland and I walk around looking where I can put it and I just can’t figure anything out. I’m thinking over the windows drape down in the archway of my house, which is kind of common, anything different, or unique in a house with nowhere to put a garland?

I feel mistakes are only mistakes to people who believe they are christmas decorating guru. If you decorate your home for Christmas and YOU are happy with it, that's all that matters. Not everyone has thousands of dollars to decorate. Don't let anyone ruin your Christmas joy by making you feel you've done it all wrong.
@Sechari11 ай бұрын
… did you even watch the video? None of these other than maaaaybe one or two (depending on what you already have or how far you’re willing to go) cost any money at all. This comment is so patronizing and self righteous..

Whew! I actually do all of these things!! But I do wait until Thanksgiving ends. My confession is I am an overly organized person. Day 1 put away all the normal decor and dust thoroughly. Day 2 unload all my boxes, fluff trees and garlands, add lights. Day 3 decorate…it’s a walk down memory lane and a special time!! I also hire a college guy to do all the toting and climbing and help with the lights which speeds things along. I already have tickets to a Celtic Christmas concert and holiday tour of homes which puts me in the holiday spirit. It all gets neatly put away and labeled which, you’re so right, is the key to the next year’s decorating. I am eagerly looking forward to what you have planned for this season!

Some brilliant ideas and tips here, I’m a florist and I used to do demonstrations and especially at Christmas time I would tell people to think of your Christmas tree as a flower arrangement and look at how nature grows. Nature doesn’t have all its flowers on the outside edges it has flowers in the branches in different depths . It gives perspective and makes your tree look fuller plus it’s always fun to peek in and see what little bits of magic you can find within the tree. The other thing I always said and was always leave space for the butterflies…. Or in the case of a Christmas tree the fairies to fly! Filling every space with something can look too busy and you “cant see the wood for the trees” you need each beautiful bauble and decoration it’s own space to shine. Sometimes less is more, if you’re not sure if it’s needed or if it goes….leave it out.

I loved this video! I need a basement this size for all my Christmas stuff plus the other Religious and Patriotic holidays (NOT Halloween) and Seasons, plus I’m a reseller! My attic is a little embarrassing with so much stufffffah! Your garlands are so amazing. I’m going to work on mine this year not just wrestle with them. I did add extra last year with pine cones and bells. I’ll try ribbons this year

I have started decorating my tree In early November. I put my ribbons and picks in then I use fall florals instead of bulbs. After Thanksgiving I pull the fall florals out and simply replace them with my bulbs. It only takes a short amount of time. That way I don't feel like I stared too early and don't get bored with my tree before Christmas.

“Joseph, dude, it’s been a while. Aw, he’s so cute.” I literally laughed out loud! Really enjoy your videos, Rebecca. I agree with these mistakes. The tags! My goodness. Why do people leave tags on anything? I buy Sterilite boxes and the tags come off first! 😂 Just say “no” to tags! And yes, gotta fluff that greenery! Makes such a difference! I might try some decorating before Thanksgiving. I have always done the day after. We like to keep Thanksgiving extra special and not overshadow it with Christmas. So I’m not sure. Still considering on that suggestion. But I agree with your reasoning. Another great video!

Unless your a millionaire, lol! I've found if you take care of your decorations they can last years. Also, it's important to set aside money monthly for not just gifts but decor. Then you're not stressed out come November with all these expenses you didn't plan for. Even if your just settling back 20$ a month in your decor envelope,DO IT! I PROMISE, It makes a huge difference! I haven't replaced the family tree in 15 years. This year is replacement year, lol! (We went a little longer than expected, thanks to a certain pandemic!) Am I stressed, NO. The money is in a special envelope ready to go! If you don't take anything away from this, know this. The holidays can be stress free if you just plan a little in advance. ❤😊❤

Rebecca, your tips are terrific! Can I add one? Curl the tails of your bows. Also, can I make a suggest to you? Calling round ornaments “balls” is inelegant. How about referring to them the way British people do as “baubles” - that’s much classier!

Do you ever declutter? Do you sell any of your decor that you don’t love anymore or drop it off at Goodwill or pass it down to other family members? I think it’s a shame to leave it all boxed up and not being used.

All that Christmas stuff stored in her basement is ridiculous but to each their own. The only 2 rules in Christmas decorating is only use good quality items and don’t over do it- less is more
