It's crazy how they literally cloned the gameboy just for this screen upgrade. Might have to buy some myself just to restore a few old shells I have lying around

For anyone curious about the screen size - it's smaller at 2.4 inch, which allows it to be a 'no-cut' mod. The same store has a 2.6 inch screen, which does require a little cutting of the shell window.

Besides cutting the shell window you may also need to cut/remove the 2 "screw holes" above the screen because the IPS frame is a little different. You also need a new screen lens, otherwise a (small) part of the screen will be invisible. I did the mod with the larger IPS screen (FunnyPlaying DMG RetroPixel IPS Q5 LCD), and I love it! So happy with my GameBoy 🥰

Thanks Kip, always appreciate the great work you do. On your recommendation ordered and installed the new screen. You made it look alot easier than it was for me as the ribbon cable fold and position caused the screen to glitch and stopped the sound to the speaker when installing the main case screws. Took me a while and figured out by folding the ribbon up so it sat over the lower board connector, the connection then remained solid in the connector. The screen quality is impressive and has given my Gameboy a new lease of life. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

That reminds me of when I fitted a new, I think it was a BennVenn, screen to my old Atari Lynx. One thing I preferred about it was not having to replace a whole board just remove the old screen and back light. Nice job though and big improvement to it's playability.

I did the backlight and bivert mod on my personal gameboy years ago which was a massive improvement but i think im going to order one of these now to replace the backlit kit

Yeah, it’s really simple and straightforward- just connect the ribbon before you fit it!

to think that the gameboy could have been a better hand held console. probably spent nearly as much on the original screen back then, as you would have spent on the upgrade. never seen tetris so viberent, and spent many fridays playing it still remember the music all these years later!! wonder if there will ever be a stereo version! even though be weird playing tetris with 2 speakers!!

If this works the same way the Funnyplaying screen replacement works you simply push in on the dial to switch color palettes.

Yes.. press and hold the contrast wheel in for a second, and then you can use the up and down on the contrast wheel to cycle through the different palletes. Or you can hold in the wheel for 3 seconds, and get into another menu where you can cycle through and change the settings on the screen, and build your own colour palettes too. I worked out where I recapped my Gameboy, a bit of solder was stopping the pressing in mechanism of the contrast wheel, so that didn't work for me when I made the video.

Hmmm that’s annoying maybe use a metal spudger to lever it up with one hand as you attempt to unscrew with another?
