Am one, not sure why anyone would "defend" Sony's actions here... the requirement for PSN accounts literally stripped people in countries where PSN registration isn't allow from the ability to play and subsequently their investment into the game itself on Steam. You shouldn't "need" a Sony account for HD2, you have Steam and Steam ID's function pretty much in the same way that a Sony PSN account would, all it would realistically do is allow Sony themselves to moderate the community but Arrowhead can honestly create tech internally to effectively do the same thing and provide access to Sony's moderation team to handle it there.

Universal and ardent rejection is not "feedback" and Sony trying to frame this as them listening to needs and wants of their player base is as insidious as what they were proposing in the first place. That's not to say anything of how quickly Sony folded on keeping their players "safe and secure" with their new measures, all but confirming that this was never their priority at any point. To be honest, while I hate Sony and had no intention of making a PSN account, they kinda got screwed over here... PSN accounts were meant to be required day 1 and forcing 3rd party accounts in games is nothing new. The major problem here was not communicating the requirement after it was delayed due to server related issues, creating a sort of bait and switch, but that was Arrowhead's responsibility more than Sony's. If Arrowhead had still required a PSN creation/login at the start of the game, despite PSN services being disabled, this wouldn't have been the issue it was. The one thing Sony did really mess up with was allowing the game to be sold in places without access to PSN. That would be Sony's responsibility. But Valve would have dolled out automatic refunds to anyone effected who didn't realise the PSN requirement, so even if it was a massive oversight, little damage would have been done. Like, don't get me wrong, I'd prefer if these 3rd party accounts didn't exist and we could get together against Ubisoft and all the other ones too. But, if I'm being impartial, they were introducing something most large publishers already had, only to get screwed by Arrowhead not properly communicating a requirement they had agreed to six months prior to the game's release.

When somebody calls another a "console peasant", it's not because they prefer to play on a console rather than a PC. Console peasantry is specifically this attitude. Also, re PS5 is a PC: it uses a FreeBSD-based operating system with Sony's proprietary firmware. FreeBSD is frequently used in server roles, embedded systems (e.g. PfSense and OPNsense routers), and sometimes desktop PCs. The PS4 and PS5 are really just PCs with heavily limited functionality.

I do find it funny how some of them point at the refunds being a bad thing lol. As someone who owns a PS5, one of the worst aspects of it is how restrictive Sony's refund policy is. We went from being able to go back to a store and get a full or even partial refund, to none at all if you even so much as launched a game. Steam's refund policy isn't perfect, but it's miles better than what Sony offers

I'm on PS5. I stood shoulder to shoulder with my PC brethren, to the point where I was seeking legal recourse to getting a refund, since on the trajectory Sony was taking, they were cratering the entire community on both PC and PS5. I'm relieved Sony came to their senses (after a fashion), and that we can attempt to return to normalcy. In any event, take care not to lump all PlayStation players into one monolithic group. I've always been about the games, and don't give a rip what you play them on.

I dont even know what remaining reasons are there to clamor for Sony; they have some of the worst security in PSN, recycles the same 3 IPs and 3rd person over-the-shoulder "cinematic" style of games, disbanded Japan Studio, their ONLY developer that makes refreshing and unique games, forces devs to "tone down" their works because it doesnt align with their brand of politics while other versions of the game remain unaltered for other platforms, nextgen console has like, 5 exclusives and some of them not even true exclusives; its all very tiresome

A big part of the win here is on Valve/Steam siding with the customers. I'm not sure Sony would have turned around had they not decided to pull the game in countries where you can't easily get a PS account or allowed refunds.

People who get screwed over by John Deere aren't exactly bloggers or giving online reviews regularly and don't have platforms to really fight back. Hold on Kira, you and a lot of other content creators are jumping the gun, read that Tweet carefully, "The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward." The update will not be moving forward, they haven't said they will drop the PSN linking. Those countries that Steam delisted where PSN isn't available are still delisted and I'd rather use that as a bar than Sony's words. I'm hoping for the best but life has taught me to expect the worst.

I don't play Helldivers2, but I am glad that the players won this one. The problem with the shift towards digital only media is we don't have the same consumer protections that apply to physical media, and corporations take full advantage of that. If I buy a cup, the manufacturer can't remotely lock me out of being able to use my cup until I agree to new terms that didn't exist when I bought the product. Why is it acceptable with games, "smart" devices, and other digital/connected products when it would be flat out theft in any other context?

I don't care about Stellar Blade either but if you have no principles then you are effectively just on the right side for the wrong reasons. If _everything_ went as Sony expected and PSN logins worked from day one, they would have stole some the game in *more than 170 countries* that couldn't even play it. That's either malicious intent- which doesn't make sense because people would immediately refund it and they would take a huge PR hit for being greedy/incompetent -or they were just incompetent from the start. The fact that they didn't do anything about all those customers _after_ it should have been shockingly clear to literally anyone in Sony that things were going to get bad. I'm genuinely amazed that I don't hear anyone making that point more often. They, the distributors, fucked up epically from jump by not pre-region locking the game to countries that can get PSN accounts _and_ they let people think the login was optional rather turn making it _explicitly_ clear that it was only a temporary situation. None of my friends saw anything in game trying to get them to login and they all thought it was optional.
