Here' some context on the Big 4: Metallica - their sound came together from combining the speed & aggression of Motorhead and the melodic, raw delivery of Diamond Head. Megadeth - Dave Mustaine was a huge fan of Diamond Head as well as the punk attitude of Sex Pistols... but he also added the proficiency of Judas Priest & Iron Maiden & added some jazz elements. Slayer - Their sound came from the dual guitar delivery of Judas Priest & Iron Maiden. But they also added underground punk rock aggression & speed from D.R.I, Minor Threat, etc... the imagery of Venom & Mercyful Fate. Anthrax - They were from the New York scene, and had the Ramones' influence & humor, and the melody & delivery of Kiss. But they loved Motorhead, as well as Judas Priest, AC/DC and Iron Maiden. They were also the only band of the 4 w/ a singer (as opposed to a screamer) Joe Belladonna, who was more of a fan of Journey & Whitesnake.

Really glad you enjoyed Anthrax and Slayer! I think the ideal introductory song from Anthrax is "I Am The Law." It's got a great hook and a lot of energy, but it's less chaotic than "Caught In A Mosh." And it's about Judge Dredd, which is fun. With Slayer, I think my only caution would be about their lyrics. "Angel of Death" is about a Nazi doctor who committed atrocities during the Holocaust, and the band basically writes about that real history like a horror movie, and depicts the doctor as the monster he was. But because the song doesn't come out and say, 'He was a bad guy' (probably because it's obvious from what he did) some people interpret it as pro-Nazi. It's not, though, and neither is the band. They just write about dark subjects, like a lot of other metal bands do.

Fun reaction video! Metallica Enter Sandman was first song I heard from the Big 4, and I was hooked. I then heard Megadeth Symphony of Destruction and fell in love. Metallica cracked the door, Megadeth kicked the door wide open. Then I heard Anthrax, and they were a fun band. They were the one that felt like sitting down and having a great time with. They were fast, but also a fun band. As you've heard from others, Anthrax is more punk based, which comes from their drummer, Charlie. Charlie writes all of the Anthrax music after the first album. He writes the drum parts, the guitars, and bass. Then he'll play it for the rest of the band, and they'll make their tweaks to what he wrote. The rhythm guitarist, Scott Ian, writes the song lyrics for them. For a short time, when John Bush was the singer of the band, he would write some of the lyrics with Scott. Musically, Spreading The Disease, Among The Living, and State of Euphoria, you're going to get a very very heavy punk rock influence from Charlie's writing. He decided for Persistence of Time, he wanted to start experimenting, and wrote a somewhat more prog metal style album, and shifted them away from being just thrash. At the time, Scott Ian was going through a divorce, and wanting to write darker lyrics, and he didn't think Joey could sing the vocals dark enough for what he wanted and imagined when he wrote the lyrics. He was replaced by John Bush, who coincidently, had turned down joining Metallica when Metallica was forming prior to Kill 'Em All. I would rate Joey a 10/10 live, but I'm not the biggest fan of his higher pitch singing on the old albums. A lot of people love it. He has rejoined the band, and his vocals on album have gotten much better. If you were going to listen to anymore Joey era Anthrax, I would recommend the Live in Chile version of Skeletons In The Closet. That is from the same album as Caught In A Mosh, and I think it really shows the perfect vocals Joey can do singing live. It really captures them in their element the best. If you want to try a John Bush era Anthrax song, I would recommend the album version of Inside Out, not the video or a live version. The solo is played by Dimebag Darrel from Pantera. John Bush has a deeper voice than Joey and just has a much more gruff voice. Another great song from them with John Bush is Only. At one point, James Hatfield said that was the perfect metal song, and later said the song Safe Home is his favorite Anthrax song. Safe Home is a much more mellow song, and has my favorite Anthrax guitar solo, from Rob Caggiano. And, if you are very adventurous, there is a live performance of John Bush singing The Four Horsemen with Metallica. They were doing their 30 year celebration, and invited people to play with them, and John Bush chose to sing The Four Horsemen and they briefly talk about him turning down joining them back in the day. He and James sing the song together.

These bands were 4 of my first 5 concerts: Metallica - 'Ride the Lightning' tour, Armored Saint opening Anthrax 'Spreading the Disease' tour, Accept opening Slayer 'Reign in Blood' tour, Overkill opening at a 200 person bar in Denver Megadeth 'Peace Sells ... ' tour, forget who opened, at the same 200 person bar, I met Dave Mustaine. First concert was 'Iron Maiden 'World Slavery Tour', saw them a second time on that tour when they came back through Denver and saw them at Red Rocks. I also saw Slayer/Megadeth and Anthrax - with Alice in Chains opening - on the 'Clash of the Titans' tour, at Red Rocks. Those were good days. Thanks for the reaction! Now do some Jethro Tull ...

Of the big four, I'd argue Anthrax is honestly the most underappreciated. So many good albums from them but the other three are just so much bigger in comparison. If you want something easier on the ear from them, their latest album's first two tracks, "Impaled" (a short minute long intro instrumental) and "You Gotta Believe" are great at just building excitement until it all comes full head in a "If I DON'T bang my head, I will combust" kind of way. It's great. Slayer's drumming can definitely sound chaotic, but not always. And I'd argue that South of Heaven is more indicative of their work as a whole, moreso than Raining Blood. Their last album, Repentless (genuinely a great album) is very much like SoH. Haha yeah, Holy Wars is an S-tier song on an S-tier album. The drumming and guitar is very fast, but they also show a clear understanding of rhythm and syncopation, so it's easier to understand. It's not just a wall of white noise. Great reviews! Can't wait to see more. 😄

I like how you're giving props to Kill Em All. Its my favorite Metallica album right now.
Anthrax would write simple sounding lyrics that were actually deep, Caught In A Mosh is completely metaphorical for being trapped in a situation you hate. Also, South Of Heaven is about Earth and how humans treat each other.
@bossfan493 жыл бұрын
Anthrax is from New York....and you can hear a difference in them compared to the other 3 bands who are all from Los Angeles. Anthrax adopted a bit more of the punk attitude and would be among the first to incorporate some hip-hop/rap into their sound like fellow New Yorkers the Beastie Boys..who actually started out as a punk band.

More digestible Anthrax songs: Indians, Madhouse, Medusa, Armed & Dangerous. And talking about Slayer: Reign in Blood & Angel of Death are their most popular songs, but they're also two of their more extreme ones. I would recommend Seasons in the Abyss, Dead Skin Mask or Skeletons of Society next. And if I'm guessing correctly then it's AC/DC next on your list.

Kira the next bands in your thrash journey should be the remaining three American bands that make up the 'big 7' (they're always debated on to replace anthrax in the big 4) and then the German big 4. Exodus - deliver us to evil Testament - disciples of the watch Overkill - head first Toxic waltz, practice what you preach and elimination would be the popular suggestions, but I think you'll like these songs better. They're in chronology as well :) The German big 4 are tankard, destruction, kreator and Sodom. My suggestions for them would be based on your reaction to heavier slayer.

This video came up on my suggestions and I'm very glad it did. As someone who grew up in the Big 4 thrash era, seeing new fans get as excited about it as I was 30+ years ago is incredibly satisfying. So happy you've found this particular treasure-hoard! \m/
