As a Conservation Officer in the US, I love seeing videos like this where there is the joy of the hunt and the conservation aspect as well. To many people think that hunters are just out there to kill. They don't understand the balance and the sanctity that most people put into the sport. 99% of hunters are more about the preservation to maintain the resource for the benefit of future generations.

(a brit) I started watching kirby as banter to be honest and did laugh at some videos but this was beautiful as half scot we occasionally get to go up and visit family but they're aren't many places more beautiful than Scotland, and to be honest if kirby did an hour long on game keeping and land it would be up there with some of the best nature documentaries, amazing cinematography and the knowledge shared I've got to say apart from cigar vids this has to be my favourite and lets be honest as someone from my neck of the woods would say that is a 'dirty' view, the Loch the land simply stunning

I wish he’d just admit he’s inexperienced at shooting. Instead of trying to front that it’s the gun difference. His mechanics are the issue. Not the gun. But yeah, he didnt shy from putting it all on film which is more than a lot of KZbinrs would do.

My Grandad was going to be 6th generation games keeper looking after estates in Northern England and Scotland, i believe some Royal estates too. He worked with his dad and uncle until called upon during WW2 in his late teens and decided to stay in the military post war as military police rather than going back to the career he was groomed and trained for from a very young age. I often wondered if I would have been 8th gen games keeper, it does give me food for thought for what could have been,

@paulortiz2035

Sipping cognac is Scotland? Not likely! Is it? Not any more than folks there drinking an Amercan bourbon or a Tennessee whiskey! It would be a Scotch whisky or nothing! Maybe Aberfeldy or a Glenfarclas! There are very good whiskies there that are just never exported due to small bottlings but that are quite excellent nonetheless! (The same is true with Champagne! Many champagnes are never exported because they don't produce 500,000 bottles a year, minimum. Many times a small estate vintner has a real advantage, over the behemoths, with their products. Absolutely! Do not over look or dismiss smaller operations! Or do but at your own disadvantage!)

I would suspect the problem you were having, Kirby, is that the Purdy SXS has a prince of wales straight stock. That is very common for that type of shotgun, especially with double triggers. If you are used to an over under, your cheek rest will be different. The height over bore needs to be very low for the SXS. So, it’s just basic geometry; if your head is up too high over the bore, your eyesight angle will intersect the shotgun bore at the front sight, causing you miss pretty much every time.

Just a couple of points: Never wear new boots to a shoot, especially deer-stalking. Game keepers love to take clients in new boots for a good, long walk to break in their new boots😂 When closing a shotgun: grip the barrels with your left hand and run your right hand along the underside of the stock to close it. Practice mounting the gun i.e. bringing the stock from your waist to your shoulder in one movement.

When closing a gun of this quality please hold the barrels still and lift the stock to close. That way the barrels always point at the ground and never move. Modern clay shooting, which is very safe, often has people lift the barrel whist holding the stock still. This brings the barrels up and flat. Part reason done is firstly clay grounds have a large safety area, and clay guns often are stiff to close so getting the barrels moving seems the easier way. Sometimes the clay stand safety cage makes it the only practical method. The former way is the safest and preferred in the field. The latter a bad habit in so many ways. We have all done both at times.
@JamesChurchill3
@JamesChurchill3 3 ай бұрын
I was always told to lift the barrels to a static stock, the reason being is if the gun were to go off at the point of closure, it would be aimed skyward and not into the ground or at some equipment. Is the 'move stock to barrels' a game shooting etiquette thing?
@muskett4108
@muskett4108 3 ай бұрын
@@JamesChurchill3 Never heard it done that way. For the barrels to be skyward enough the cartridges might fall out??? Control the barrels where they point first, preferably at the ground a foot in front of you; and then close the action by lifting the stock. Quality guns don't need slamming shut, and should just click shut. When bringing the barrels up to close, invariably on shutting they point six or seven feet away, if not flat waist height. Why I try not to do it that way. Why a good gundog sits to your side, not to the front. When carrying a loaded gun then either high port or low port depending on the ground being moved on and the spacing between guns. On easy ground I like high port, on difficult ground then low port. The question is what muzzle sweep could happen if going for a tumble???
