Both are fantastically made and of a high quality for their respective price point and depending on who you are where you like to spend your money. While I support all indevors toward outward expressiveness by way of fashion boundaries bending habits. And flouting convention in most respects. I'm not sure that the highly exceptional craftsmanship in those shoes wouldn't be wasted on the overall gutter sheek of that posited ensemble. Might in effect detract from the carefully placed Dave's red hot, and Tabasco paintjob. Better to go with a set of vintage combats, torn and painted vans or DC, flip flops. Or for real effect a par of Manolo Blahnik 3" pumps(?). But, alas, to each his own. And ultimately I salute your sence of irony. 😉

Shine helps with that, soldiers tend to be polishing their shoes much more often than your average Joe and point out new people by the way the stitching still differs from the colour of shine usually staining them slowly.

I went crazy when I first got into shoes and bought like 15 pairs. I haven’t “needed” to buy another pair of shoes in years and haven’t regretted a single purchase. Plus, for Allen Edmonds at least, you should NEVER be paying full price. Wait until after Christmas and you can usually catch them for like 70% off.

ShaySlay. This is what you don't get about classical men's wear. Men interested in classical men's wear do not wear it to impress others. When we do it's mainly for special occasions or work. We don't care if someone else knows the details or not because they matter to ourselves. Now don't get me wrong I love street wear and I'm a Nike dunk fanatic and would be willing to pay over $3,000 for a pair, but the average joe doesn't care and that's fine because they are special to me. I like Rolex, but not to impress other people , that's why I wear the most simple Rolex. All in all we don't dress to impress other people this is our hobby and we love the details.

It amazes me the little things people who have money to spare focus on to justify the cost. On both sides...the craftsman making them as well as the customer who can buy them. I personally would never buy any of these shoes, not just because of their cost but because as a leather craftsman myself, I understand a bit more how these are made and why none of that makes them better. Stitch density is purely for looks as it literally punches more holes in the very material that is holding on to that seam. It requires significantly less force to tear that seam away than one stitched at half or less holes per inch. I know as I personally experimented with the number. The hidden stitching on the outsoles is very useful but the nearly polished finish is not. Finished leather can be very slick, especially on smooth and/or wet surfaces. Personally I prefer a synthetic sole. Leather was only used for so long because we lacked any other flexible, durable material to use.

Spanish shoes, in general, are quite comfortable. Many people here wear nice shoes everyday, everywhere. And not everybody is rich, so usually you can find nice things that last a long time for decent prices. It's not odd to hear about dress shoes or heels that someone purchased 8+ years ago. It's also true that people here tend to wear appropriate footwear for the season and occasion. Sport shoes for running, very stylish casual for work, dress shoes for events. Winter shoes or boots when it's cold/rainy and lighter fare in summer. Women and men here swear by several Spanish brands because they can be worn all day (comfort/practicality is prized almost as highly as style). And in southern Spain you can find shoemakers with quality hand-made, leather shoes, propperly welted for less than 200€ with the benefit of a local cobbler who knows how to work on them ( Palanco, for example ... m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYGxfZmwbMZ2pqs ). There is still a culture here of fixing and maintaining men's and women's shoes (as apposed to throwing them away). I have great soft leather Pikolinos casual shoes which, after lot of street miles, I refurbished into tango (dance) shoes. They must have cost me maybe 120€ four years ago and they are my new favorite dance shoes. My wife has many nice pairs from various brands that are 5+ years old (some that are 10+). There are brands like Carmina (and other designers w/crafstman pedigree) but also several mid-range brands (Wonders, Campers) that are great everyday wear and even sport shoes (Joma). I'm no expert in shoes, by any measure... but simply living here -- it's something that you notice. In any event, I've never owned Carminas but it's a respected brand. Entry to that range is ~400€ but you can find really quality shoes for half of that as well. Beyond 200-300€, you're really basically paying for style and name brand ("nicer", "prettier", "cooler" yes... but not necessarily "better made"). Just my opinion. I don't sell shoes and am not Spanish.
@earthknight60
@earthknight60 4 жыл бұрын
@@inef85 For excellent shoes in Spain you do't even need to go that high, I got a fantastic pair of handmade leather men's dress boots in Spain for €69 (end of the year sale) a few years back. Without the sale I think they were a bit less than €200.

No doubt there are better shoes but the price prohibits me. I am satisfied with my Allen Edmonds. And yes, I still have and wear my first pair 35 years later due to proper care and recrafting. This is a great video. I too, have graduated from entry level great shoemaking to high-end mens RTW and MTO shoes. You explain the differences very well, as I have had to numerous times to my wife, family members, and friends why I seek higher grade shoes, and why it matters. In the fashion industry where the markup can be as high as 400% simply by adding a name brand to an item, men's shoes are more often priced according to style, craftsmanship, and quality of materials used to make the shoes. The details matter to shoe connoisseurs, and it's one of the first things that we notice.

Kirby, this is the video I've always wanted to see--someone walking through different price points of shoes to really explain what you pay for at each level. This is what I desperately needed when first buying quality shoes to know how to differentiate options, and tell where one is getting appropriate quality for money, and where one might be paying only for the brand. Bravo on this video! I'd love to see a follow-up where you look at some other brands (e.g. Crockett & Jones) and maybe even some of your bespoke black cap toes. As someone who regularly wears both Allen Edmonds and bespoke George Cleverleys, I wholehearted agree with you about not being moralistic about different levels of shoes. I actually think a pair of my Allen Edmonds are my most beautiful shoes--they've developed a lovely patina over the years, with frequent wear and periodic quick polishings (not even putting the time in to do fancy mirror polishes). I get more joy wearing them than my bespoke Cleverleys despite the Cleverleys (which I do love) obviously having a much better fit and the better finishing (though, only I and no one else will notice that, unlike the patina on my Allen Edmonds). I think this reinforces the ethos of your channel and business: taking care of your wardrobe can make it more valuable and beautiful, as long as you are starting with something at a minimal level of quality.

It doesn't matter that they are men's shoes. Heck, it works out in my favor. I have big feet. Women's size 12 aren't the easiest to find. But a men's 10 is a standard size.
