It's hard to get excited about new digital EQs these days, but this one is special.

Downloaded the demo and I was amazed that it has no time limitations, you only can’t save or load presets(which I don’t mind anyway) and maybe lacking some other features maybe. But it’s pretty usable that I think the demo alone is enough. Plus I can put some really nice picture on the background and customize theme which is pretty cool.. love it!

Have you compared meldas automatic eq to fabfilter?
@cachelesssociety51872 жыл бұрын
I did a test with Fabfilter Pro Q3 inside DDMF oversampling at 16x. This way in comparison to Kirchhoff the airiness at the very high end 6-12 k) is very comparable. It took me a lot of listening to really hear much difference. Only when I "popped" my ears (like wen on an airplane) could I discern maybe 10 percent improvement with Kirchhoff 2x oversampling and 117 bit mode. That "airy" band is a critical band for many instruments, electric guitar and vocals being two. Turning those off made it very hard to hear any difference from Pro Q3, and Pro Q3 did quite well if not better with that oversampling jacked up like that. Metaplugin is pure Gold. I'm pretty sure many producers will not be that obsessive but I deal with synthesis techniques and electric guitar, where distortion and saturation are literally a central concern. I'm still interested in getting Kirchhoff EQ, because having its built in high end clarity, and dynamic EQ functions all seems handy.
@Hexspa Жыл бұрын
You like metaplugin for oversampling?
@cachelesssociety5187 Жыл бұрын
@@Hexspa I quite like it for oversampling, that's what I use it for mainly, although you can save FX and synth chains in them. I use it for oversampling, especially on saturators, or on synths where something in my chain is saturating, and where synth waveforms are producing square waveforms, or nearly so. Then its unmistakable - I can hear the improvement as clarity in the brightest regions of the sound. My ears are not great either, but I imagine we're talking about some foldback aliasing but I could be wrong. I recently started using DDMF's grand EQ in minimal phase mode because it does a better job than my other EQ's on acoustic pianos. It compares to Crave EQ - both are good.
@Hexspa Жыл бұрын
@@cachelesssociety5187 Hmm, square waves. That makes sense. I've notice myself that oversampling changes how synths sound, and of course distortions and other things. Using reaper, I have this feature available to me also. The idea of saving FX chains is cool but, not to sound like a fanboy, reaper is making progress there too. Of course, Metaplugin makes these features portable. Seems like you're really into EQs. I've been using MAutoDynamicEQ and it's pretty good. ProQ3 has some tempting features and Acustica updated Gold (vintage Neve) recently so that's been keeping me busy. Do you have any insights into my choices? :)
@cachelesssociety5187 Жыл бұрын
@@Hexspa I haven't gotten very far into Acustica - its on my list at some point. For guitar I'm using the DDMF Grand EQ because of that minimum phase setting - it only takes 32 samples of latency if I remember correctly. Crave EQ takes 48 on the similar setting. I tried these 2 EQ's compared to a bunch of others when trying to compensate for some unwanted very upper frequency range stuff on certain Pianoteq piano models. It was then that I really became convinced that there's something to the phase settings (linear, minimum, etc.) but of course as a guitarist I can't have more than about 15 ms of latency,. Possibly the other EQ's can all do well with their greater latency, I didn't test that.

In the free setting, the blue (relative horizontal line) is shorter than the entire (relative) range. Its range (length) becomes adjustable. This has me slightly confused. What if I took the relative & detect horizontal line (blue vs bluish red) and have them overlap, as is the case at 5:31 of this video. It just means it focuses the detection percentage in a position that overlaps the relative detection (which was at first befuddling - these are really just 2 identical functions at this point, aside from being the opposite?.)

Reminder: the Kirchhoff was set to 117 Bits while the presonus EQ remain at its default (64 bits?). Oversampling on the Kirchhoff is turned off, the PreSonus is the default so it could be on or off.
@GreenLightSound2 жыл бұрын
The Kirchhoff was actually set to 64-bit processing like the stock EQ - the 117 bit button would be lit up if it was engaged. The stock EQ does have oversampling, but that shouldn't really matter that much with a shelf. I suspect the stock EQ would cramp with a bell filter and no oversampling.

flavor of the month, how bad are people tracking their recordings that EQs need all this? In a world where most new mixes are horribly overprocessed we throw more processing options into the mix. People waste too much time and money on plug-ins and you can't even resell them. Buy outboard gear you can get incredible mixes once you learn how to use them, they are nice to look at and you can get your money back out of them when you resell them. I see no end in sight with people needing the next great plug-in month after month wasting money, some people I know have hundreds if not close to a thousand plug-ins, by the time they find what they are looking for I am half way done with my mix. Tools are supposed to make work easier and most plug-ins do make mixing easier, but having a huge selection to choose from and learning how to use them correctly serves no real purpose.

Can you really tell me that hardware junkies don't do the same thing? The only difference being the cost of the equipment is so high that they can't afford more until next year. Who's to say that new mixes are overprocessed? If people like to listen to it, the engineer did exactly as much as they needed.
