Jeesye Norman 1986 did a great performance singing it to HM The Queen in an opera house. Took the roof offand flattened the queens hair in the blast. Kiri, indoors, does a great version of God Savethe Queen and Gid Defend NZ and Pokare kare ana

I would say that the problem was not with the orchestra but with the amplification system. Both Dame Kiri and the orchestra were miked.

With all due respect to Dame Kiri, this version simply cannot in any way, shape or form hold a candle to the version performed by the late Jessye Norman. I encourage everyone who has not yet heard to listen to it. It is truly riveting and there are no words to adequately convey the incredible quality of her performance. It is simply flawless!!! RIP Jessye!

Why would the British ask an American to sing their national anthem? It made sense to have Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sing it because her native country of New Zealand is still part of the British Commonwealth, making New Zealand’s titular Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Very common with non singers. Ms. Norman was singing inside with a choir and a production. Dame Kiri was singing outside with orchestra and a mic. Very different situations and very different kinds of singers. I am a fan of both and have seen both live. I can't compare the two...and i find nonsensical to do so.

I have seen many times when the Queen stands there as God Save the Queen is being played. She is always stone faced and I wonder if she doesn't care to be held that high of standard or like her Royalty isn't as important as others do. She seems to much of a down to earth Queen then wanting people to hail her as Queen. Maybe as an American I just don't get it. Either way I love the song and love Her Majesty.
