to expand on 1:07, waiting to retrieve the destination coordinates has some purpose. a useful sequence when playing kiriko is to swift step to a critical teammate, look down, and immediately use suzu. if the teleport destination was determined on the button press rather than ~0.2 seconds later, you could end up at an outdated position outside of suzu range -- e.g. using swift step on a fast-moving teammate like a charging reinhardt. I don't know if this factored into the design (or if this hypothetical situation happens frequently enough to justify this) but it's worth noting.

@@nemozinioux I would think that casting a valid skill and going through the entire animation should teleport you, but I'm not sure what all causes the skill to fail. If it's only from switching heroes it wouldn't matter either way.

@@cheggf it works like that - Player presses the key, triggers the skill - The skill saves in a variable whose teammate's character the player was aiming - THEN it waits 0.2 seconds - After the .2 seconds passed, the game takes the teammates character that was saved, takes it's coordinates and teleports to it. What breaks it is that between the moment when the character is saved and the moment when the game looks for it's position, the character changes, aka does not exist anymore, so the game cannot find where it is and decides to use 0;0;0 as the place to teleport to instead What I said is that by simply checking once the .2 seconds passed if the character that was saved still exists or not BEFORE taking it's position and cancelling the tp if it doesn't exist anymore would solve the problem

@@akseli8314 more execution focused players in other genres have been known to hit timing windows that small or smaller with reasonable amounts of consistency, even under stress. taunt jet upper for example requires you to hit three frame-perfect inputs in a row, and some people can still do it semi-consistently. the real issue is the amount of time you need to dedicate to learning this for such a niche use case.

Fantastic video as always. I think it’s worth mentioning though that the world origin either changed or is more relevant on Rialto now that it has unused PVE areas. Being sent to the world origin on that map now puts you in the PVE area left of the first payload turn

A pretty cool and also kinda practical way to use this bug is to teleport to a Dva while she's demeching (since it deletes the mech dva entity, it works the same way as the interaction with people switching heroes.) You can maybe use it to escape if you have no other options, and if the origin isn't off the map lmao

Elaborating on the topic of world orgin outside of OW. I played pokémon SV recently (i honestly really enjoyed it), and i belive the pokéball models are often stored at 0,0,0 / world orgin when not used. Certain rooms have some kind of pokéball slightly peakig above the ground at times, often either in the middle of the room or at the only entrance to said room. I will remark, i didn't find the game as buggy as many others have said Great video as allways, diving into the inner workings of OW.

it's possible they factored in the default position of 0,0,0 expecting some bugs to occur with regards to that so they put it out of bounds to make such exploits as useless as possible. That or during the pre alpha phase of their maps what is now the origin was in bounds but the layout changed making the origin no longer be part of the play area. There is no real need for the origin of the map to be in the exact center, unless your engine has certain size limitations and you're making the biggest map ever. I did some unremarkable mapping back in the UT99 days using Unreal Ed 2.0 and in that engine you couldn't build geometry past a certain point, but there is nothing stopping you from putting the entire map in one corner as far away from the origin as possible. But there is also no reason to avoid it. It's just the default starting point.

The bot hasn't unlocked itself yet though, that happens 30 seconds after the game starts. So it's only really useful to get to a better/more aggressive position for the first fight.

So that spot in Junkertown is 0,0,0? I find that quite interesting. Back when Junkertown got released, I accidentally found out that if you throw a Junkrat mine on the TV antennas around first point, the mines would sometimes teleport themselfs into that 0,0,0 spot and stay there. Had alot of fun experimenting with that tech before it was eventually patched out.

I had a game as Sombra where this happened, the Kiriko was so confused she went from one side of the map to the other in seconds, I went to pick her up from the spawn and immediately translocated bringing her to the enemy backline, but everything ended well, we spawncamped a Ana 4 times until their DPS came to help her.

a way this could be abused in maps like espranca is if the whole teams killed near the end, kiriko could get to the robot to stall time much faster (assuming the robot isnt close to the kirikos spawn) and could also be used to disorient the enemy team

Funny thing is because of a fix for a glitch with mei it is impossible to tp to the map origin on New queen street and colosseo, sence you end up in a place where you are within a wall. And btw. if you do it just right you can actually survive the tp on Parisio and stay oob. On Eichenwalde you can do something simular by climbing right after the tp. This even allowes you to stay outside the spawn room if you hugg the spawn door. Also this glitch can be used to escape TDM maps if you tp to a duplicating echo, since many of the 000 coordinates are outside of the tdm boundaries.

I know it's probably weird for me to have a video suggestion but I investigated a bit of this and it's always puzzled me how it actually works but when Echo Duplicates heroes. What logic determines what abilities' effects stay after the Duplicate expires? There's so many interactions in the game and you're very thorough and you would do way better than my crack at it.

to my knowledge, pets created by echo persist up to 3 seconds after her ult ends. this includes things like bob, turrets, immortality field -- anything you build. this is in contrast to status effects like nano boost or zenyatta's orbs, which do not persist after duplication. it has been a long time since I've checked this, though

I had this happen to me once a little over a week ago. I was teleporting to a target on 3rd point on blizzard world, and ended up back in front of spawn and couldn't figure out why. My target had died during that .2 second cast time was the only thing I could come up with, and this pretty much solidifies my thought.

I immediately found out about teleport deciding coordinates on the teletport and not the button press day one. Because of this, she can actually teleport to a different ally than the one you targeted. Which can be very annoying and even deadly not going to your intended target. Because of this flawed logic in the code; I actually set her teleport sensitivity lower to prevent this from becoming a problem. Sure it technically makes her targeting more strict, l but it's a lifesaver when multiple allies are lined up for your teleport at varying distances in a team fight. I believe I have it set to 20 sensitivity. While it's technically trickier with a greater need of precise aiming to your target; I think it's ultimately worth it so long as teleport can change targets on you during the casting animation.

Yeesh, this kind of bug should definitely get caught in testing as part of a checklist for targeted abilities. Switching heroes is something every player has access to at all times, and has all sorts of strange behaviors. The fix, IMO, would be for Kiriko to track the location of her target every tick, and then use that *only* as a fallback if the intended target is gone or invalid, to drop her as near as possible. Or just cancel it entirely and refund the cooldown, since this is a rare occurrence.

One way I can see this being fixed is the ability grabbing the target player's coordinates at the beginning of the casting as well as at the end then if at the end of the casting the target player doesn't have a valid coordinate, the ability can default to the coordinates grabbed at the beginning.

The first thing that comes to mind to fix it is to add a failsafe where attempts to teleport to 0,0,0 are denied, but the problem is that in some maps 0,0,0 is inbounds, so it’d negate teleports if the target entity was there.

There is a better solution to this problem; Instead of checking entity's position, the game can simply check if that entity actually exists or not. Pseudocode: def swift_step(self, target): sleep(0.2) if target is None: cancel_ability() teleport(self, target)

@@zensonaton4095 Yeah, checking the existence of the entity would be the easiest way, but I proposed the denial based on coordinates since we aren’t sure how OW handles entities, so checking coordinates should be much easier than checking entities. Also, I think I’d be useful to have a 0,0,0 failsafe to protect the game from possible bugs related to teleportation.
