The performances given here by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hermann Prey, Mirella Freni, and Maria Ewing are simply EXTRAORDINARY! This magnificent rendition is a cruel reminder of just what we lost with the untimely death of Ponnelle in 1988, at only fifty-six years of age. He was in the process of filming all his Mozart productions when he died, and though thankfully he left us films or videos of Mitridate, Idomeneo, Figaro, Cosi, Zauberflöte and Titus, he unfortunately had not yet filmed his definitive versions of Lucio Silla, Entführung and Don Giovanni. We must be grateful for what we do have from him, which includes Rigoletto, Manon, Falstaff, Madama Butterfly, the three big Rossini comedies, Tristan, Mathis der Maler and the three surviving Monteverdi operas. Stage productions that he was planning to film and which his death prevented were Otello, Flying Dutchman, Traviata, Carmen, Norma, Turandot, Tosca and the complete Ring. Alas, what might have been!

KTK VAULT I'll take it a step further. The most unique female opera vocalist of the 20th century, who can you compare? See "Making of West Side Story" on YT, Kiri sings "There's a place for us" - which somehow did NOT make it to the record that was released from these sessions. Maestro Bernstein, no slouch he, heard Kiri's voice and "just had to" have her sing this tune. It gave me *goose bumps*. I don't think anyone was more perfect for Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Ditto here, Mozart would have LOVED you Kiri. And the fact you are a Pacific Islander would've tickled him pink (well there weren't too many Maori in Europe at the time lol).

John attree, I agree that the libretto is hilariously funny if you understand the text. I have known the opera since I was a kid because my parents used the opera for introducing us to the basic facts of sex. Certainly unconventional - but the plot of the opera is impossible to understand if one is unaware of what may happen between humans in a bed. Heck, the opera actually starts in a bed - although it is still under construction :) :) :) Lorenzo da Ponte was a wonderful librettist, and Mozart knew how to translate the humor as well as the serious aspects into one of he greatest musical works ever. I have English subs btw...

An interesting film. Subtitles or not, there's so much going on that I have to read a synopsis before the next scene. Mozart loved this kind of thing. For pure perfection, the opening "Cinque/Dieci/Venti" scene is just superb. The orchestration, for any of you orchestra geeks (like me) out there is just incredible. And lets face it, Lorenzo DaPonte never gets the credit he deserved, for this and especially for Don Giovanni, which was likely the greatest opera ever, and assuredly #1 in classical italian opera. The turns of the phases in italian ("Sembra fatto inver per me") and the rhyming is exquisite. Mozart wanted the poetry to be subtle and unobtrusive, and DaPonte came through like a boss! Comparing this to DG, you can see how after this the Recetativo Secco was something wanted to marginalize, preferring DG's major use of Recetativo Stromentato.
@peibyn52784 жыл бұрын
Yes, almost all the credit should go to those who CREATED this extraordinary work: da Ponte and Mozart.
@TerrayunaOwl3 жыл бұрын
Thankfully, we study this at A Level for Music on AQA, so they both get the credit they deserve. And yes, the orchestration is truly incredible
