Whelmed is a great description! This guy can easily be made out of pre-existing plastic parts, I think apart from the bionic leg. There really isn't anything unique or inspiring about him. We got this guy in the plastic command squad pretty much.

The only reason I don't like the flag is that the command squad kit has a much bigger flag, when imo the herald should be the main standard bearer.

In terms of historical basis - flags of this size can be appropriate, and do appear a lot. The Roman standard and French Eagle standard seem to have inspired them, but they usually have a much smaller flag with them - a lot of standards I've encountered are icon or flag, or both small - this is weirdly big. Then again, there are larger standards historically, with much bigger flags and smaller icons, and I think that would have just been cooler. Maybe have a decal sheet or printed plastic pattern on the flag to allow you to customise it, that would for me fit with the "go big or go home" vibes both 40k and 30k have.

I completely agree that the legion standard should be less generic and more personal. We also have a good flag in the command squad. So I don’t think these heralds are completely necessary. With that said, I really like him. It’s a collection of small things besides just the robot leg that I love. The gorget style, the loin cloth is under the cod piece, the sash across the chest, good flag, nice neutral pose, and the fact that there’s no ornamentation on the belly button. I wouldn’t want the pony tail helmet on every legion, but I still like it, and that’s an easy swap. He’s just an all round good marine. And a very nice base for kitbashing characters. By the way, I really like the blue and yellow knee on the dark angel. Nice splash of bright colors.

This would have been a great opportunity to design a kit with legion specific upgrades in mind and make it a sort of 2 part kit, one part is the basic body and arms, the second is legion specific head/shoulders/banner/etc....

I like the mini ok, the main thing that bugs me is that the banner looks like a tea towel. It’s just a little too small, i like a big flowing banner. This is something that should be widely visible across a battlefield and i like the big eagle but the little banner below just looks kinda wimpy

not only is this a generic model meant to represent 9 very stylistically diverse legions, you're missing a huuuuuge lore-based error with the banner kiri: the main element of it is the palatine aquila, which wasn't used by astartes until after the heresy when all loyalists were granted the right to use it in their heraldry and on their armour (rather than only fulgrim's lot) and even then they usually had an imperialis (winged skull) instead, as this represented the losses & bravery of the loyalists. the aquila is obviously the symbol of the imperium so you'd be forgiven for thinking any imperial could use it, but in the case of the astartes that's not the case. bit weird that the lore guys didn't catch that but hey ho

You’ve got things a bit mixed up with the aquila, this is just a regular imperial aquila. The palatine aquila used by the Emperor’s Children has curved upswept wings and diamond shaped tail feathers at the bottom. While the aquila here has straight edged wings and talons at the bottom. The Imperial aquila is just the general symbol of the Imperium and could be used by any Imperial force during the great crusade and Heresy, for example, every scimitar jetbike has an imperial aquila slapped on the front, same with the land raider proteus. You are correct in saying that towards the end of the Heresy and especially after, the Imperial aquila became a much more prominent symbol amongst loyalist forces.

@@ayrton2557 i think it's you who've got things mixed up man, as have the designers of this mini. the palatine aquila *was* the "regular imperial aquila" in m31, and the emperor's children were the only astartes allowed to use it until after the horus heresy. the design on this mini is indeed more reminiscent of the m41 aquila, which makes it anachronistic, and it's borne by a non-emperor's children legionary which makes it inaccurate to the lore. so rather than prove me wrong you've actually highlighted another thing wrong with the mini :)

@@wolfgangrecordings I double checked my old Horus Heresy black books to make sure I wasn’t getting my wires crossed and what I said originally is correct. In book 1 Betrayal, which is where Horus Heresy Emperor’s Children had their lore first established for the game and setting. There’s an entire section on the Palatine Aquila on page 103, where it states that the Palatine Aquila was used exclusively by the Emperor’s Children, but that other variations of the Aquila simply represented the Imperium and the Emperor. And this is further supported like I originally mentioned by numerous other Horus Heresy era models having the straight-edged, taloned “m41” style Aquila on them. Like the scimitar jetbikes, land raider proteus and relic contemptor dread. I know GW changes lore like this sometimes but I wasn’t able to find any other sources stating differently.

Reveals recently are doing this weird thig where they show more detail simply by putting cropped zoomed-in bits of the image next to the full view. Instead of have a different angle of the detailed sections. Guess it means they can just take one image of each model?

He looks very early Great Crusade to me, when the legions had yet to be reconciled with their respective primarch. So if anyone is making a War Hounds army (for example), this model might be a decent fit... But for a proper HH Legion, it's a lot of "not quit it"

To be fair, as a model, it's quite a nice model as a base for a generic mid level command unit. The only thing that irks me is it being resin-- I thought they'd be going plastic for generic characters given GW had stated that they were moving Heresy to GW from FW to make the generic stuff plastic and leave the legion specifics in resin This is just coming from my place as a modeller with a deep preference for working in plastic though, so I probably have some bias with my issue

Seeing the other examples for the other chapters.. I do not get what "else" you would want. I believe it's pretty standard practice to have a certain "kind of model" and just make it repainted for the other chapters, without much physical difference between each other, if the role it's the same. Why would Herald Consul of chapter Y would look different of Herald Consul of chapter B if they serve pretty much the same purpose, outside of stylistic choices that reflect the chapter, as provided in the other examples?

I think the whole "soul of the legion" is just lifted straight from Rome. The eagles of the legions were highly symbolic and important, but their eagles and other standards were not particularly distinct in themselves. That said, I think some more customisation would have been nice. I also think that the vexillum (banner) should have been a bit larger or the aquilla should have been a bit smaller. The proportions seem a bit whack

I’ve started to understand what makes me feel HH releases give me mixed feelings, and it’s the fact that they add stuff like cool bionics and ornamental stuff that looks awesome, but belongs on Astartes in general. Every time I see something like a cool bionic leg, I end up thinking ”that’s what should have been included on the Iron Hands upgrade sprue.” They’re great minis, but the result is that I just miss these things in other sets.

The standard is too small. The chest plate beneath the cloth is missing an Aquila or other ornamentations. The loincloth is out of place. He looks like he cannot decide on what to wear, so he chose a little bit of everything, and now it looks bad.
