I've owned a Mesa Quad (Mark II/III rack preamp) and currently play a Randall RM100. They are both great amps, but honestly the Randall MTS line is way more versatile, and just sounds better to my ears.

Numetal bands primarily used Mesas. That's why they ended up sounding very similar. Eighties bands, real metal or glam, used Marshalls mostly. My uncle bought his Mesa back in the eighties before they got terribly popular, which was a good decision due to Marshall domination. I'm not knocking Marshall though; my main amp is a Marshall AVT 50 (I prefer solid-states).

it's funny cuz I was heavily into guitar hero when it first came out and I picked it up in tremendously short order. so once I saw how quickly I excelled at guitar hero, I wanted to learn how to play an actual guitar. Funny thing is I impulsively stopped at a pawn shop one day bought a Washburn House of Blues guitar and an amp for $135. My first amp was a BASS amp too just like Kirk mentioned in this video.. \../\.../\..../\...../\....../\......./

I'm not surprised he got a deal with Randall , but Mesa Boogie won't touch him, they are still considered a "serious" amp company. What's next Kirk, the "Enter Sandman" wah? Yeah, that would really sell.lol If this amp came out in 1988, it might be worth checking out. Don't bump into it too hard Kirk, the little sound modules might fall out. lol

Mesa is so Nineties. Most metal guitarists are using Krank these days. That's the flavor of the month though. Mesas are great, and sadly are more known for distortion: they have wonderful clean. Marshall may see a new awakening thanks to all their new advertisement and added gain knobs. Randalls have never been too popular though; Dimebag got great tone from them, and his were solidstates. Anyway, I wouldn't use a Mesa if I wanted to sound original. Most guitars sound the same through them.

@emg32 Yeah, These new Randall MTS amps are great and all BUT having owned a Mesa I can tell you that a lot of what makes the Dual Rect sound the way it does is the power stage of the amp. These MTS amps only address the preamp part of the equation. I've never been happy with the high gain sound of these amps but for Fender and Marshall tones they're great.
