Then I met you, Kirk, in Decatur Alabama at a Love is Worth Fighting For conference and there I was able to ask you a question, how do you witness to an atheist. The person I was asking for was my nephew who was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma a year or so later. He was saved before he passed away. Praise God!

Hymns are beautiful and should always have a place in worship. There are beautiful new songs as well. As I walk through the stores, I always seem to be singing/humming quietly the hymns and I don’t even realize it until i stop and think. Usually, that song has to do with what I’m going through at that time.

I grew up singing mostly hymns, and the church I attend now also sings a lot of old songs. My kids also have a love and appreciation for music and lyrics that are rich and varied. That being said, I understand Mark's admonition to avoid judging other people's motives. I was visiting a church that had a worship team singing boring tunes and "shallow" lyrics. I was feeling sort of disgusted when I clearly heard the Holy Spirit ask me, "What if those people actually MEAN the words they're singing? Who is worshipping right now, you or them?" I was humbled! Now, I still love my good old hymns and gospel songs, but I can respect other worshippers. ❤

I loved finding this interview. Love both of your ministries. Mark and I are pretty much on the same road at different places. I've written a handful of songs, love the hymns, grown to love directional worship music TO the Father and Son, and LOVE a rounded worship service. So many churches either sing only hymns, or none at all. I've been in both. My ministry is to "sing a new song", and some of those "new songs' are really born out of the '70's and '80's. They are new to a lot of people reaised in churches just like Mark's and my own. It's a wonderful walk we have with our Lord. Always showing us His mercies new, every morning.

As a teacher who works with teenagers daily. The lyrics is not what brings people to music it is the sound. I think the way to keep the hymns in church is the way Gaither did it. Modernize the music to fit contemporary music with the old hymns and you can bring them to them. As they listen to them with a contemporary sound, they will hear the lyrics and get the message. I remember hearing Gaither talk about doing it and I think that is why people of all ages know Gaither music and he has blessed so many people. You can find where people have done that with Amazing Grace. If someone does that to the other hymns this generation will know them.

I am grateful to say that I am a born again Christian and have been since I was 19.......I praise God for my dear precious and of course hilarious and nutty Mark Lowry!!!!!! and all the Gaither Vocal Band also just every man or woman sold out to Jesus in many ways!!!!!! I pray for their ministry and that God would fill all their hearts with much obedience and strength to much glorify the wonderful name of Jesus Christ in all they say and do!!!!! To God Be All The Glory!!!!! however folks if you don’t know Christ as your savior then it burdens my soul to think that you are headed for a terrible place called Hell where the Bible says the fire is never quenched and the worm dies not! Folks you are not promised tomorrow! If you want to know how to be saved from this horrible reality then please by all means don’t hesitate to comment right back so I can lead you to the savior! 2 Corinthians 6:2 clearly states “now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation!” And Hebrews 3:15 clearly states, “Today if you hear his voice don’t harden your hearts! It is not me but the Holy Spirit that I pray reveals to you the truth of his precious gospel......John 3:16 says for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes on him will not perish but have everlasting life! V 17 says then V 18 says whoever believes on the son is not condemned but whoever does not believe on the son is condemned already because he has not believed on the son whom God has sent! Also Acts 16:30-31 what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house I am not threatening anyone but just warning them what will happen if they reject this precious gift of eternal life! Christ died a horrible criminals death! He was beaten brutally mocked spit upon and endured countless hours of torture pain for all of our sins! Ppl go to hell because they reject that pardon for their sins! And Jesus is saying to them in Matthew 25:41 depart from me you cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels! Hell was only prepared for Satan and his angels! It is not God who threatens anyone it is the craziness of rejecting the free pardon of salvation! It’s like if you’re in court you’ve committed a crime say you murdered someone! Now if you say to that Judge hey I know I’ve done a terrible thing of murdering that person but I hear you’re a good judge and so I know you’ll be fair to me...... the judge is going to reply well yes you’re right about one thing I am a good judge and because I’m a good judge I’m going to see to it that you’re punished and that justice is served! Well then all of a sudden someone you don’t even know comes forward and says you know what I know he’s committed the crime he’s committed and he deserves to go to jail but I really don’t want to see him go to prison so I’ll just go to prison for him so he can go free! So if you accepted that offer you’d be free to leave the courtroom but if you didn’t well you’d be crazy and go to prison yourself! Well that’s exactly how it was 2,000 years ago! He is God in human flesh and he came to this earth lived a perfect sinless life and even though he knew that we had sinned and because of our sins deserved to die miserably but he said no I don’t want to see them suffer so I will go and take their punishment for them! Even though he did absolutely nothing wrong still he chose to take the punishment for our sins so we can be set free from the power bondages and consequences of our disobedience to God! Romans 5:8 says For God commends his love toward us that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us! 1 John 2:2 says he was made to be the propitiation for our sins! And not just for our sins but the sins of the whole world! 2 Corinthians 5:21 He who knew no sin became Sin for us that we would be made his righteousness! The truth is if you had to get to Heaven by your own effort then you cannot do it! Because Romans 3:10 says there is not one that does good! No Not One! Romans 3:23 says For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God! Romans 6:23 says For the wages of sin is death! But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our lord! But the good news is Romans 10:9 If we confess with our mouth and believes in our hearts that Christ died for our sins then was raised from the dead we will be saved! V 10 For it’s with the heart we believe and it’s with the mouth confession is made unto salvation! God gave us 10 commandments to follow and we’ve broken every one of them! And because God is a good God he cannot allow our disobedience to him to go unpunished! Well then like I just mentioned above his son Jesus stepped forward and said no I don’t want to see them punished so I will take their punishment for them! And also like I said he died a terrible substitute criminal’s death for us on a cross so now all we have to do is accept that payment for our sins and we can escape the terrible wrath of God that is to fall on them who do not accept this atonement that was sacrificed for our sins! Praise the lord Romans 10:13 says Whoever calls on the name of the lord shall be saved! And 1 Peter 1:4 you’re an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you! Christ clearly said in John 14:6 I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the father but through me! Acts 4:12 clearly states that there is no other name given unto Heaven or earth by which we must be saved as there is salvation in no other! Jesus clearly states that there is clearly only one way to Salvation and it’s him that’s it! There is no other way! God Bless everyone who reads!

So wrong to a degree. David sang and praised Jesus. Praise is another way to display our love for Jesus, as long as it is for Him and not our glory. I challenge you to find in the Bible where it says singing to the Lord gets in the way or our worship. You won’t find it.

Thank you ,Kirk, for mentioning the Getty's and the beautiful songs they have written that are so beautiful and so Biblical like In Christ Alone, The Power of the Cross, See What a Morning, Christ the Sure And Steady Anchor, Psalm 23, 42, 130, 150, He Will Hold Me Fast, to name a few. I just discovered the Getty's a couple of years ago and my spirit was so starved in my heart and soul. We hadn't heard more than maybe 10 hymns in 10 years since contemporary music took over church services and I yearned to hear some of those hymns I hadn't heard in so long. When I found and heard that same longing in your voice, it was a comfort to know my husband and I weren't the only ones in the tiny minority. We had been a fan of Mark and been to some of his concerts. The Getty's have introduced us to some beautiful music by fellow musicians they write with that we also had not heard, like Stuart Townsend, Matt Boswell, Matt Papa to name a few. Thank you for having that podcast with you and Mark that I just "happened" across. I had also come across another one that I saw and greatly appreciated where you talked . about your wife wearing a wig and filled in for the star so you could kiss her instead of the star and honor your marriage. thank you for that testimony.

The CCM of today has been a major block for me, and my heart is heavy within me as others are worshiping joyfully. I sing at home, in the car, and at the occasional Gaither concert😉. I used to sing out loud at my old church which had a blend of music, and I have prayed for my current church, which embraces CCM style music, and my own heart. I had to have a scan on my brain while having my head strapped down that lasted 28 minutes. The only way I made it was to come up with a music set that I knew would last half an hour and I laid there and mentally played every note of a praise & worship and altar-call set. I must have sped it up in my mind. When I finished, I had to rerun the chorus "Something About That Name" a couple of extra times because I had to fill an extra 90 seconds. Glad to hear someone else has used the same coping mechanism.

The church I attended, before I moved, did something that blended both the old and new. There would be contemporary songs, but worship leader would bring a hymn that tied into the sermon. And before we would sing the hymn, the leader would bring kind of a "pre message" and share the history behind the song, and what the writer was going through during that time. Think... Horatio Spafford author of "It is well with my soul". People can relate to that. Plus, for several hymns, there are up tempo versions that relay the same message, just in a more modern sound. For example Amazing Grace/My Chains are Gone.

He was a wild child and it seemed like he was really scared of dieing but i remember after he would pray i would start hearing him say jesus loves the little children. I dont think thats a hymn but that what came to my mind when they were talking about singing the hymns.

I love watching this Baptist because he explains scripture in a way I can relate to. Hope he never hears me singing...lol. God gave him gifts and he is sharing his relationship with Jesus and it is awesome.

Thankfully, we have a mix of new songs and the old hymns. But as I look around, I honestly see the young people singing and enjoying the hymns as much or possibly more than the new songs.

Mark, I get it. I'm an old baptist too, but church is also for older people. You can never know who is or is not saved or their age. We had a 98 year old saved at our small baptist church! Praise the Lord! He went home to the Lord at 100.

We still sing hymns in our church. I grew up on them too and prefer them to worship music.

9:00 I run the live sound mixer at our church. The sound booth is at the rear of the church. I can see everyone in the seats. I LOVE!!!!! to watch others worship GOD! I gives me such joy.... Seeing someone getting into the music and lyrics, brings me GREAT JOY and tears to my eyes. Make a joyful noise to the Lord! AMEN Mark! AMEN! Psalm 98:4-9 Psalm 100

Oh, I miss seeing Mark and Vestal Goodman during the Gaither concerts. And the joking that would go back and forth between Mark and Jake Hess.

He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood. He loved me 'ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him. He plunged me to victory, beneath the cleansing flood. One of my favorite songs.
