Yeah, Sonic CD does have a lot going for it. Multiple ways to see the true ending, beautiful cut-scenes, emphases on exploration, multiple versions of each stage, introduction of long stay villain Metal Sonic, all and all this was clearly the more ambitious game to follow up the original Sonic game. Maybe I have a little bias considering Sonic 2 was my first ever owned video game, but it is my preference. I love the emphases on speed, level design was top notch, Tails was the perfect long stay companion, Super Sonic was and still is one of the coolest power ups in any video game. It was pure gaming bliss and one I still come back to frequently today. If it weren't for Sonic Mania, Sonic 2 would probably be in my top 10 favorite games of all time.

It's sad that most people simply hate Sonic CD due to the often lack of speed in the levels and the need to do some pretty annoying tasks to get the true ending. This is why Sonic CD is not really a favourite in the community of sonic most of the time. I guess some people simply hate the existence of the time stones, they do just seem like a knockoff of the chaos emeralds.
@TurkeyFaceX2 жыл бұрын
@@lastcorridorsans Never said I hate it, actually I thought I gave it high praise. Thing is, Sonic 2 might be getting a free pass being my first ever video game and I hold it up unfairly high likely due to my nostalgia. Where Sonic CD is a game I only started playing more recently when I picked it up on Steam a few years back. Plus you're right, the speed in Sonic 2 does help, after all the concept and main selling point of Sonic was speed after all and this game is one of if not the best entries when it comes to speed, only matched by possibly Mania. And no, boost doesn't count, artificial speed doesn't compare to the raw momentum gameplay Sonic 2's speed brings to the table.

The recent re-releases of Sonic CD (Chris Whitehead) included the time attack mode, which removes the time travel posts and lets you attack the level just on speed. Despite the size of the Sonic CD levels, you can get through each one in some very quick times (you actually unlock more features this way). You can do this in the regular game mode as well but have to pay attention to the time travel posts.

Sonic 2 definitely has the smoothest of transitions between Sonic 1 to its successor, especially in terms of level format. The one detriment to the game to me.....has got to be the special stages though. I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE THEM!!!! Sonic CD whilst I'd love to have seen Super Sonic or even a different ability given for collecting all the Time Stones, was greater overall in the experience of collecting said stones or having the options to skip them entirely for the Badnick Machines to achieve same said result. In Sonic 1 you can kind of consider them luck based, however I still felt more in control and when I messed up...I felt it was on me. Sonic 3/Knuckles I felt the same way, probably the easiest of the 4 in my opinion. Sonic CD's was both a mixture of challenging like 2, fairness like 3/Knuckles, & new enjoyable experience accompanied with CD format/style. Overall Sonic 2 is better/best if you want an improved Sonic 1 experience with increased speed and stronger reward for collecting Chaos Emeralds (though I always just used 19, 65, 9, 17 and then 4, 1, 2 ,6 sound test codes to get said reward....cause again.....F* Those Special Stages) Sonic CD overall is better/best in my opinion if you want a mixture of both speed and a funky soundtrack adventure with both JPN/US accompaniments. More grandiose with 4 versions of stages, abilities such as the Super Peel Out & Sonic 1-styled version of the Spin Dash/Attack from Sonic 2. Special Rewards aren't as strong as Sonic 2's, yet the story encapsulated within makes the journey more worthwhile in my eyes. Different strokes for different folks. Sonic 2 would still be an easy 8-9/10 to me, Sonic CD would just be an easy 9-9.5/10 by comparison.

I still have yet to try a "Play Good Future for Every Zone" run, where I destroy the generator in the past, then warp all the way to the good future, and play the entire good future stage (It's honestly rather tedious). i love the jp/eu & us versions of the sonic cd soundtrack equally for different reasons. jp/eu is more upbeat & in-tune with sonic's personality, us is more atmospheric & compliments the level environments. i throw on the jp/eu one when i wanna dance, throw on the us one when i wanna vibe. "speedway to good future" is one of my particular faves off the us ost.

12:52 So *that's* why the Past music wasn't replaced in the American version of Sonic CD! Due to the Boss and Game Over themes in the US soundtrack being so terrifying, I've only played with the Japanese soundtrack in the 2011 version of Sonic CD (initially its Steam release; I wouldn't mind the 2013 versions of Sonic 1 and 2 on Steam with a single upfront cost and no ads, though I suppose that ship has sailed by now). Plus, the Past themes don't mix that well with the US music.

This is a good video for detailing a heartfelt chapter of video game history. Two different sequels accomplishing different things, presenting different ideas and takes on Sonic, and contributing in unique ways to the franchise for decades. I wish video games still took a consumer-focused approach to gameplay and development. Since the industry has long since solidified around a specific set of iffy norms like any other technological innovation (publicly accessible literature in the late 19th century, recorded music in the 1910s-20s, cinema in the 20s-30s, TV in the 50s-60s, video games in the 90s-2000s, the Internet in the 2000s-10s, and generative AI's probably going to settle down some time this decade), we're not going to see a narrative like this in video games ever again.

I’m gonna piss off a lot of people, but I also prefer Metal and Amy over Tails. To me they add more interesting perspective into sonics character than just “sidekick friend”. Amy explores Sonic’s perspective on freedom, Metal like you said perfectly foils his attitude and liveliness.

I wouldn't call silver a rival because sonic literally only fights him once and they barely interact in the game and the first fight you have with johnny is near the end of the game so wouldn't call him a rival but you can call them rivals if you want i don't really care

@SuperSonicMan22658 ай бұрын
I know this is a late comment but I am pretty sure the rings are indeed canon, but that needing 50 rings to transform is simply a game mechanic, kind of like limiting how long Tails can actually fly for before getting tired in order to prevent the player from flying too much.

4:42 So when did Knuckles The Echidna come along? I always enjoyed playing Sonic & Knuckles (and Sonic 3 & Knuckles) as Knuckles when I was a kid! He was my favorite character because of his ability to fly and climb walls. Also, I always thought that the game was so much easier with Knuckles, as he didn’t have to go to the Doomsday Sone - he had an easy Hidden Palace Zone and other levels, in comparison to Sonic (& Tails). But I know that I can play as Knuckles in Sonic 2, by locking on the Sonic 2 cartridge to Sonic & Knuckles, so obviously the idea for Knuckles must have been around when Sonic 2 came out, right?

So after looking up some of the details: interestingly enough, the Sonic & Knuckles cart actually contains a separate ROM with the full modified code for Sonic 2. Sonic is replaced by Knuckles, there's some new graphics data for Knuckles and some stuff added to the level data for places only Knuckles can reach. When the S&K cart is booted with another cart attached it checks for the serial number of Sonic 2. If found, it loads the game from this modified ROM, and the only code executed from the actual Sonic 2 cart is the sound driver.

Now I (and my cousin) grew up with the US soundtrack for Sonic CD, and I like most if not all the pieces, but when I found out there was an entirely different Japanese soundtrack, I checked it out. I also enjoy most of the pieces. Both versions are excellent at remixing one piece into three or four pieces. Of course I prefer one over the other at times. I like the US versions of the Special Stage and Tidal Tempest more. On the other hand, I like how the Japanese version of Metallic Madness has taunting lyrics, and how the final boss has unique haunting music. I like Sonic You Can Do Anything, but I love Sonic Boom.
