Boat-inspired apartment is a series of transforming cubes

The Born is now one of Barcelona's most desirable neighborhoods, but several centuries ago this portion of the Gothic quarter was filled with craftspeople and fishermen. Several years ago, a family of architects and interior designers bought a flat here in a 17th-century building and turned it into a hyper-modern transforming apartment.
The whole apartment is a series of cubes or boxes. The most spectacular is the floating bathroom cube that is an all-glass all-in-one shower plus toilet (the blinds lower for privacy). The master bedroom closes to become its own wooden cube.
The living room/kitchen area has been left open to maximize space, but the kitchen can be closed into a glass cube and a second bedroom closes behind another wooden cube. There's even a floating vertical garden cube that communicates the two bedrooms.
The space is only 70m2 (753 square feet), but it feels larger thanks in part to many sliding wooden panels that shift to morph the shape of the space. All the wood and transforming furniture give the space the feel of the interior of a sailboat, and like boats, all the space is well-utilized. Nearly all of the furniture is built-in and there's a very tiny, and very thin second bathroom that even tucks a bathtub under the wooden flooring.
The design is very modern, but some of the old fisherman's home remains in the restored 18th-century front door, Catalan vaults, old beams, and mud bricks.

70m2 (753 square feet) could, nowadays, be considered a "large" size for a big city apartment so, I don't understand why they went to all that trouble and expense to produce such complicated and intricate design where you live pushing, pulling, opening, closing, holding, twisting, swinging, doors, panels, walls, lights, curtains, partitions... let me out of here!!!

My one-bedroom apartment is 51 sq m, and 70 sq m would be a two-bedroom apartment in my city (Bucharest). So I agree with you, this is just a waste of space and an overly complicated way of doing simple things for the sake of bad design.

I think that it's in the cupboard of the second bedroom, you can see that there is a long wall in the passage , it makes sense as it's narrow and long.

I loved the way she used the space. But I didn't get the requirement of having a bathroom just at the entry door. The first thing that catches the eye when you enter is the toilet. Rest was done nicely, Best wishes.

Honestly, the kitchen was really poorly laid out, with the fridge on one side of the cube and the sink and stove on the other and no pantry space. I liked the idea of the bathroom with the glass, but the shades weren't practical at all. You can get glass like that is filled with gas and will become opaque when you run a current through it. That would have made perfect sense, or else just tinted glass. Also the hallway seemed like a huge waste of space. I guess I shouldn't be complaining because I honestly did like it and think it's well designed, I especially liked the way the 2nd bedroom could be created and was big enough for a trundle bed and a big closet. But if I was looking to buy a place the list of negatives would make me not want to buy it. I did like the tub option, but didn't seem very practical.

My thoughts exactly. The apartment really has some "wow" factor with nice materials & a decent layout, but some of the design decisions are really questionable. I don't have a problem with the shower being a glass box & I agree with her that it's kinda sexy, but the toilet? That should always be closed off from the rest of the space, not put on display & you shouldn't have to wait for a shade to lower every time you want to do your dirty business. Also that second "bedroom" doesn't have ANY room for any personal effects so it's only really suitable as a short term guest room. I think this place would make for a great Airbnb rental, but if you lived in it for an extended period of time the design flaws would really become bothersome.

Apart of the impraticality of the glass confinement of the bathroom and kitchen, it's a beautiful design. I have one question - how long does it last to have a wooden-plank shower drainage? Cause through my common sense, I'd believe that it won't be long until it grows mold, no?
