TX teacher builds space-saving container home at materials cost

Micah Woods taught woodshop and welding to high school students, but he dreamed of using his skills to build his own home with high-end wood furniture. When a friend offered him a place to build on his sheep farm, Woods began shopping for shipping containers to convert into a modern mobile home.
He purchased a high cube for extra space for light and airflow, and he specified a one-trip container to be sure it hadn’t carried anything that might be toxic. Once he cut windows and doors in the structure, he chose not to weld on a support frame (despite his extensive experience with metal) in order to create a no-weld method that could be copied by others.
Woods spent months hand-crafting hardwood furniture that would fit the space to perfection. His “piece de resistance” is the transforming sofa made of walnut pieces that slide out to create a guest bed. A slim side table transforms to become a dining table or extra countertop space (he built it to the exact height of the counters). The bed is filled with storage compartments and has an intricate headboard that is backlit at night.
Everything in the home was built by Woods, from the kitchen and bathroom cabinets to the quartz countertops (that he cut and shaped). He hopes his home, which he calls “Uncontained Dreams,” will motivate others to build a home, furniture, or something in their lives. He is currently selling the home because it’s too small for his family, but he hopes to build something larger soon.

The man has some serious skills. And excellent taste as well. His pride in showing his home and how he built it was heartwarming. He seems like a very kind human being as well. For me, the kitchen occupies a lot of space, I would personally prefer a bit more living space. And the couch seemed a bit narrow. But, these are my own personal preferences. He must be an excellent teacher. Seems very patient.

Love this guy and his passion and focus to detail :) He's right, American made used to have pride...now things are manufactured to break so the consumers are lifetime consumers. I had to replace a newer dryer that survived about 5 years. I bought the most old school one I could find, without all the bells and whistles this time, because I'm old enough to remember when the old school items lasted decades.

Wow! So much attention to detail and really clever designs that keep such a light and open feel throughout. Everything custom built to his specifications, and now he has a lovely home that he could literally live for the rest of his life comfortably as it's all on one level. With the price of homes these days, having this beautiful asset is MAJOR! The fact that he can pick it up and move it to anywhere easily is also a huge bonus, and since he built it he can maintain everything in it himself. Again, this is huge. Just getting a plumber or electrician out to your house to LOOK at something costs $150 bucks, never mind the cost for parts and labor to actually fix the problem. The "cost" of living is in large part because we have "experts" do everything for us rather than taking the time to learn how to do things for ourselves. What Micah has created with his own two hands is a stunning home with high end finishes that he can maintain himself with very frugal means. He's created great security for himself and followed through on his dream in a manner he can be extremely proud of. So inspiring!

Love Mecah's work, the elegant simplicity belies the thought, care, love and joy that has gone into the creation of this home. "I always wanted blue cabinets"; that is one advantage of tiny builds that Mecah touched on several times. Compared to traditional home builds, with tiny's, you get to choose, with a greater degree of freedom, what you want to spec... soft-close drawer sliders, blue cupboards, etc
