The mudbrick is excellent in this home, but the high ceilings with the light coming in at the top and the cross ventilation removing the heat from the house make it a wonderful way to keep cool. I was in a old un air conditioned house in the Florida keys that had a large cupola with windows that pened and allwed the hot air to escape and it was very cool in the middle of summer.

What he says for the bricks: "It's not pure clay. It's probably 60% clay with a mixture of light soil, a bit of straw just to combine it together." For the finish: "That mixture to get that finish is sieved soil, a handful of lime and half a bucket of cow manure. You work out of a big bucket, You put it on the wall and you just rub, rub, rub. You leave that for a couple of days and then you can go back over it with a dry bag and give it another rub and that will take all the roughness off it."

Kirsten Dirksen hi. What is the exact mix ratio of the finishes for wall? Thank you.

The Quechua people in the Andes Mts of South America have been building homes of adobe brick for thousands of years and still do to this day. Their construction methods are no where near as good as this and they live in a region 10 times more earthquake prone than California. Their houses hold up just fine in quakes of descent magnitude. You could design a mud brick home in California to withstand earthquakes. The Quechua can do it, even 2 story homes. So, why can´t you?

I'd love to have a mudbrick house, but they tend to crack during earthquakes. Since I'm based in California, that's a big problem. Maybe I'll have my dream home if I ever relocate!

There has been research done on seismic reinforcements for mud bricks. One solution uses bamboo and chicken fencing.

Anyone know why cow manure is necessary in the mix? What does it add to the mix?

Isnt that too much clay as a percentage?..
@stochastic246 жыл бұрын
No, 60% clay is right in the optimal range.

A large post and beam home with infill. Most countries do not have the luxury of any lumber and use all soil for the structure. Save plenty of money though.
