Have you ever tried using Derwent Inktense as a base layer, instead of watercolor pencils or paint? It would become more of a permanent ink base layer instead of a watercolor layer that could unintentionally be reactivated by oms. I haven’t tried it myself, but think it would be quite beautiful underneath it all.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 2 жыл бұрын
You could definitely try it, although Derwent have specified that they do not test the lightfastness of the inktense once water has been added... so I personally wouldn't use them on anything that I am planning on selling 😊 But if you aren't worried about the longevity or archival quality of your work then it's worth a shot! I have the full set of inktense pencils and blocks and they're definitely fun to work with, but again, I would only make prints from my art that I created with them.. and coloured pencil takes such a long time that I wouldn't want to waste those hours on something I couldn't potentially sell Hope that makes sense! 😊

Your videos have really inspired me to draw with colored pencils again. I have two questions. How do you find your reference photos and how would you advise drawing imaginary places/objects without a reference?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt

Thank you 😊 I use royalty free sites like www.pixabay.com, www.unsplash.com or www.wildlifereferencephotos.com I wouldn't suggest not using a reference if you want your work to look realistic

Forgot to ask-Clairfontaine pastel mat is not available here in Japan, but regular Canson Mi-Tients is, what do you think about that for using with color pencils and which side if you do? Thank you!
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 жыл бұрын
I like the Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper (not the Touch/Tex - just the normal pastel paper) and use the smooth side 😊 I also like hot pressed watercolour by Arches They both work differently to Pastelmat (you will need a sharper pencil because the coloured pencil doesn't blend as easily as Pastelmat - it will also take a lot more layers to get that amount saturation that Pastelmat provides) but they still work well Also, I sometimes buy my supplies from Jackson's in the UK (I live in Australia) and they're prices are sometimes cheaper than they are here, even with shipping! so that may be an option for you! www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/clairefontaine-pastelmat-pastel-paper-gummed-pads-360gsm-au?___store=jacksonsart_au&acc=07a96b1f61097ccb54be14d6a47439b0

Thank you so much Kirsty for such clear and concise explainations and demo. You and your channel definitely deserve WAY more subs. May I ask, have you ever tried saunders Waterford high white hot pressed watercolour paper? How does it compare to the fabriano artistico ? The artistico extra white is no longer available in my state & would be expensive to have brought in I believe. I’m so sorry for all the questions! And thank you so much again!
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt

You're welcome 😊 I haven't tried it, but I have heard good things about it for use with watercolour - I'm not sure about coloured pencil though! I actually can't get the extra white Fabriano either, I just use the traditional white which is fine, it's just a little creamier, but still pretty white! I find the Arches to be a little more pure white if that helps!

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt thank you so incredibly much Kirsty!! May I ask, have you tried the 200gsm Fabriano paper for quicker studies? Also If you ever get the chance to try the Saunders Waterford high white paper, I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!! It Can purchased in sheets and it’s so much more affordable than arches in Australia. That has me thinking.... perhaps if you ever have time, a video comparing different papers for coloured pencil would be amazing. I know there are only a few around and they don’t seem to be as thorough & concise as your videos are. Thank you so much again

Hi Kirsty, beautiful work. Can you mix different kinds of color pencils to achieve the color you want? For example, I have polychromos, faber-castell goldfarb, krismacolor ( the new name for prismacolor). Do you think that would be a problem if using a solvent etc.?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can definitely mix your coloured pencils (I do it all the time!) and they will all work with solvent 😊

That's a lot of great tips, especially about using pastelmat for colour pencils, I thought it would actually be harder to use with pencils as it's designed for pastels and for gripping as much pigment as possible meaning it would just eat through the pencils really quick. But I will give it a go and see May be I like it better than my drawing paper 😅

There are a lot of coloured pencils that are great to start with, however I would not recommend cheaper brands as they are usually not archival/lightfast and usually do not work as well as artist grade coloured pencil However, if you want to save some money, I'd recommend just getting a small set of 12 or 24 and add single colours over time You can learn to layer and blend with a smaller set which will actually help you improve quicker Some brands I like are Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran D'ache Luminance, Derwent Lightfast and Prismacolor are decent as well

I've tried the pastel-mat, but it smudged so so easily. Do you have any tips?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean when you say it smudges? What medium are you using? Are you talking about the coloured pencil/pastel smudging while your work, or once the drawing smudging once it is completed? Or do you mean that white Pastelmat itself tends to get marks/stains easier than other paper? If you are talking about coloured pencil/pastel smudging while you work, you can rest your hand on a piece of paper or glassine to stop your hand from smudging the work If you are talking about after the drawing is finished, I keep mine in between tracing paper pads to keep all the drawings separate and safe until they are framed - which stops smudging Or if you are talking about the white Pastelmat itself getting marks on it, I'm really not fussed about that because I cover the entire drawing surface with coloured pencil or pastel anyway But if you want to keep the white of the paper, some other people use sheets of Frisket or masking film to block off the background so it doesn't get dirty. You can also use a kneaded eraser to lift up a lot of marks from the paper as well Hope that helps!

meeeeehhhhh kirsty!!!! i used zest it for the first time and i think i used too much :O 300gsm smooth hot pressed paper theres a solvent 'shadow' around my drawing and im not sure its going to dry :/ has this happened to you before?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, unfortunately that can happen! Depending on the paper you are using, you may need to have only a small amount on the brush (I usually dab off most of the excess solvent on a paper towel before going into my drawing) The brush nearly feels dry! You may need to go over it a few times when blending with a drier brush but it will still work fine, and you won't have the halo around the outside 😊
