1. Get your darks and lights right. 2. Avoid lines. Use shadows instead 3. Make sure your colors are the same value as the reference photo 4. Have accurate detail and texture Also, I've recently realized how important the shape of a waterline is to drawing an accurate eye, especially in profile or three quarter view.

My art teacher used to say "you can't draw something if you don't know what it looks like". He was right, references are so important.

Yes definitely! Especially if you want it to look realistic! There's so many shadows, highlights and variations in colours that you couldn't make up without a reference 😊

Tonal values, lighting and shading are def very important. a drawing wont look right if the values are all over the place and not where they should be lol
