The fact that he didn't show her the drawings and only sent her the hearts... he was giving love the best way he could, he waited for her to break her own insecurities, to get the courage to go out her dark place. And when she got out, his arms were right there and she realized it wasn't that scary anymore. And that it was okay to just be. How beautiful. Fantastic film!

John 3-15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

@GoGo-ze1mq methinks you missed the (obvious) point... she never was fat/obese. It was her distorted body image that they were portraying; wherein she believed she was fat and unlovable, and in reality was quite slim. Lots of people with disordered eating patterns have that self visibility block.

Holy crap, the twist at the end made me tear up! Body dysmorphia is a real thing and can mentally mess someone up...but the fact that Roberto sees past all of that and would still choose her for who she IS as an individual rather than what she sees is beyond encapsulating and I love this! I mean yes, people may have weight problems here and there (hell I do too), and yes my wife may have insecurities about her body as well but I still love her for her. I would choose her over and over again. I am her Roberto.

They are falsely accused of crimes they didn't commit. They are baby trapped by women. They are forced to pay for kids they don't want or kids to begin with. When she looked in the mirror she realized what happened. That’s my take on it but as someone who’s also struggled with my weight and the mental game it plays with you I felt the “yeah but at least she’s not fat” feeling too. As someone who is currently still recovering from years of having an eating disorder that (thankfully) turned into just disordered eating (which means I'm on a better path now), and has had issues with body dysmorphia... this is very real to me. This made me cry. Yeah, I'm not skinny like the girl was revealed to be at the end (PCOS and pregnancy related weight gain), so no one takes me seriously. Heck, they don't even take skinny people seriously when they say they have an eating disorder. But this is something I've had to live with for the majority of my lifetime on Earth, and it's so difficult to show people what that's like. I can't show them my perspective. But this shows it. This is really well done.

I love how this showed the other end of the spectrum because a lot of people feel that this would have been as good if she was big, and yes it would, but not many touch on this topic. I struggled so much to gain weight when I was younger, I didn't have body dysmorphia but I really disliked how I looked. People are constantly commenting on my weight and how I need to eat to look less sickly (I ate more than the average, I just had insane high metabolism), much like how people would comment on people who were bigger to lose weight. It sucked for either end of the spectrum and not many people talk about this as much so thank you for this. Everyone deserve love and care regardless of what their bodies look like

People deserve love whatever they weigh but if you love someone you will encourage them to be an healthy weight. A man who never encourages his overweight partner to lose weight when they have excess visceral fat is as bad as a partner who never encourages his underweight partner to gain weight. We need to stop acting like being fat is okay, it’s not and its dangerous how much visceral fat people have, so many people are encouraged online to love their fat body, imagine telling an underweight person to love their body instead of encouraging them to get healthy? It’s disturbing and so is pretending that people walking around with excess visceral fat guts is okay.

@@AdeDueDamballa. Agreed! I think people just took things too far. A lot of the self care and self love started with you don't have to hate yourself WHILE trying to get healthier and it's okay to be comfortable with your body but also taking steps to be healthier in one way or other. But that slowly turned into a very unhealthy view of whatever size you are it's okay. And no way you would say that to someone who is anorexic, likewise for overweight. You can totally accept your body for what it currently is while trying to improve.

@@ronsha9621 that's the whole point. She only thinks of herself as fat but looks skinny to everyone else therefore was never typecasted as off-putting/gross/ugly by general public. Like it or not it's a general advantage when it comes to forming ANY relationship when people don't immediately cross you out and refuse to get to know you or just see everything about your character through the prism of your weight. If you're interested there are plenty of videos in here (and Reddit posts) on "what's acceptable/classy if you're skinny but unacceptable/trashy if you're fat?" and you'll probably be surprised how many character traits that are considered cute/quirky in skinny people are immediately gross/creepy when you're overweight. That's why the main character finding AND keeping a relationship without magically turning skinny halfway through the story would be so impactful. Sincerely - one of the fat people who went through multiple abusive relationships because she was conditioned by society that she doesn't deserve a good, healthy relationship and should be grateful to anyone who isn't immediately disgusted with her no matter how they treat her.

@@sammyj9367 I understand what you mean. I agree with what you said, but as a person with a similar situation as the main character, I can say that these are two different situations that, regarding anorexia and overweight, should be presented separately. Of course, these are not directly opposite problems, but the author wanted to show and showed a different story. That's what made this film unique in a way. If the main character really was overweight, then, in my humble opinion, the meaning of some ideas would change, because in that case it would be a story about the appearance of support and a person who accepts you for who you are, which is also good, but it's not that's what story wanted to say. Surely the author wouldn't have made such a turn at the end if he didn't want to show it from the very beginning? In this particular film, self-esteem and anorexia are an important point. We live in a modern world where weight problems are beginning to be widely publicized, so I'm sure there are projects in which the main character is overweight and gets love. I hope I've made it clear why I think this movie is good for what it is and perfectly captures the task at hand. Although people still can perceive it in their own way.

He first fell in love with her when she was chubby. The first drawing was a chunky girl. If you look at his art he draws her when she's not as thin also. He draws her as she is at every weight she is. He loves her in all of them but realizes she is insecure so doesn't show her the drawings. He is a fat man. This symbolism shows how she holds herself to a standard that she doesn't hold others to. She sees the beauty in him, but is convinced she isn't good enough as a girl without being thin. In the end she is depicted as terribly unhealthy and thin, not as the standard of beauty. He is likely concerned that she is so thin and this is why his art begins to focus on the emaciated parts of her. She doesn't look at them and say "yay I'm actually thin." She realizes he loves her from the beginning when she was chubby, then average, then thin, then emaciated. She didnt just jump from a chubby kid to a skeleton. He drew her every single day. What she saw was that she went too far and he wasn't drawing some ideal, but her honest depiction. This is about anorexia. It isnt praising being pretty and thin, it is highlighting the common thread between body dysmorphic people and how they perceive themselves as unworthy while others love them at every phase of the journey.

He cared for her and was watching her struggle with an eating disorder and was trying to reach out to her in love. He loved her no matter what she looked like. And he himself is not tiny. Your take sounds like a projection when all the evidence the film is showing is that he saw her pain and sorrow and loved her anyway. The paintings of her she is visibly distressed and sad. He didnt glamorize or fetishize her thinness by any means. The paintings showed her she really looked and felt.

Finally found this comment...the ending was anticlimactic for me too. The fact that at the end, it turned out that she wasn't actually fat at all and just thought she was, is to me, the wrong message. She only felt happy and worthy of his love because she realized she wasn't actually fat, only thought she was. She finally saw in herself the standard of beauty that she'd been craving, and thus got the guy. But it only reasserts the point that fat is ugly.

I really love this. I myself am a petite female, but I have female friends who are plus size, and I must say I feel awfully horrible for them due to their personal experiences. I really despise the idea that girls must be unrealistically skinny, have long hair, tiny waist, wide hips, and large top to be considered beautiful nowadays. Girls are not some dolls that can be picked up and played with however. We are human with sincere feelings and deserve to be treated as such. There is nothing wrong with one having a quality they find attractive, but looks shouldn't be all that matters. If someone only "cares" for someone due to their physical appearance, it is not true love. It should be who they are as a person as well. I have a friend who is only but a year younger than me named Alex. She is 14. She has told me herself, "No boy would ever want me because I'm fat and ugly. I'm not pretty enough." Those were her exact words, and I felt mixed emotion of being furious and feeling devastation because no girl should feel that way, but society has put so much pressure on girls to look a certain way that it has become damaging to young girl's and even older women's mental health. You have many girls who have dreams to be cheerleaders, for instance, but they don't get to do so because they may not be considered skinny enough. But cheer isn't about looks. It's not a fashion show. It's about showing spirit and uplifting others. You have girls who dream of being models, but because they may not look a certain way, they are rejected. Beauty comes in many shapes, and that is what people fail to realize. Our differences are what makes us unique. ♡

I've come to believe, in my forty-five years, that we need to accept that not all of us are world-class beautiful on the outside and that's okay. Some of us aren't even beautiful on the inside. But we all have some quality about us that makes us worth the pain of living. I know people who can't find love. They look fine, but there is something inside of them that is so broken, it destroys their ability to be with someone or they always choose the wrong kind of person instead of being honest and realizing that who they could work with is not who they wish they could work with. Some folks don't get a fairytale romance. Sometimes you get a ride or die friend who will battle through life's trenches with you. We are owed nothing, promised nothing. Some people seem to sail through life, others can't seem to take a step without incident. There's no fairness to it. Given that, you must FIGHT for everything you desire. When life piles on, you have to fight MORE. Harder. Better. Kick life's ass and keep going, even after you're way past a bloody pulp.

@@caylem00I would change a lot about this film, if it were my business to change it. I wouldn’t call it ‘Roberto’, for one thing, as though the whole thing is about what men find attractive. I would make it clear this is a film about anorexia. I would not do a bait and switch for people who, naively perhaps, thought that finally, *finally*, someone had recognised how it feels to be loveless and alone because your body is deemed to be too big. I wouldn’t make a 10 minute film about something so complex as eating disorders, emotional eating, etc. But if I had been limited to 10 minutes, I would have spent equal time on two characters, one who has anorexia and one who is obese. I would have shown both women receiving love for their character, not for what their bodies look like. I’d have shown both women needing equal care and support for the psychological issues they face, and the obvious trauma they’re both experiencing. I would not make the punchline “oh, phew, she’s not *really* that whale in the mirror, she has an acceptable mental disorder, and thankfully she’s not genuinely fat. That would be horrific!” It’s bad enough that obese women feel (and are treated like) they are absolutely invisible - this film goes a step beyond that. This obese character is completely erased by the end of the film. She never even existed. You spend most of the film feeling for her, appreciating her sorrow and her struggle, and the poof! She’s gone. She was just part of a diseased mind. I would never put out a film reminding fat people that their exact body is what is perceived as the product of a diseased mind, and the worst thing that anyone could ever be.

The reality is that she's really thin and beautiful... she can only be loved if she's thin and beautiful. But it's okay that he's chunky. I simply cannot relate to the skinny girl who thinks shes fat but was actually skinny. I just can't. I'm far from my ideal weight and the torment I feel from restrictive eating, low self esteem, being alone, never feeling pretty enough, feeling like a waste of a woman, etc.

Wow, that was so incredible! I guess the ending should have been obvious, but it wasn't to me. When she saw herself finally as she really was, i literally gasped. Such a well done film with a beautiful message as well.

Part of me wishes she was overweight though, so she knew she was beautiful and he loved her and she was a larger person.

When I tell you my tears dried up the moment I realized what the shtick was 🙄 this is such a shallow slap in the face to real fat women.

@@jamoore418What about anorexics? The ones who need professional help to see themselves as anything other than fat - no matter how much weight they lose. They have a different issue to fat people, sure, but can't we bond over a shared issue with our bodies and food? You can be jealous of the thinness... but verbalising that just causes hurt and nothing productive.... like when people think telling a fat person theyre fat will suddennly make them lose weight.

What a beautiful film, i love how he doesn’t give up on her. The hearts torn out from the art pieces teared me up and then couldn’t stop when we actually get to see her, how frail and tiny she is.

This had me ugly crying through the whole thing. So beautifully done. I’ve been in therapy for a couple of years now dealing with an eating disorder. And since I quit over-exercising and starving myself I’ve gained a lot of weight and I feel absolutely terrible about it. I constantly feel like this girl did. I’m so grateful for my husband, because he’s the only one that has ever made me feel like my body is beautiful. I just still need to convince myself of that.
