The wings of the Polish Winged Hussars were actually a fear tactic, since panicking infantry is an extremely effective part of cavalry charges. It served to make the horse and rider even larger looking as well as causing a fierce clatter of metal from the metal feathers crashing against each other while charging. So you've have this group of gigantic looking armored horsemen that in addition to all the noise of a charge also have enough metal clattering to be an entire army of swords clashing against each other. The reason why this was important was because braced infantry can counter heavy cavalry relatively effectively. If you can cause a panic this result in the formation becomes far easier to penetrate, and at that point it's just a matter of chasing and chopping until they're dead or letting them rout as you move onto the next target. The Ungols sounds like a combination of Cossacks and Mongols.
@Sandrodziej19 күн бұрын
I heard it was a bunch of bulllshizz. The big wings are from late 18 and early 19 century remakes of Hussar armor. Also hussars were shock cavalry, from your comment it seems like they had effin metal feathers and notbird ones which is pretty funny since they relied on speed and having a bunch of metal feathers on their back would add a lot of weight. But idk I hope the real history was more like wgat ur saying... it would be cooler.
@Nikolarean19 күн бұрын
Yeah, I think I got it mixed up with something else. But the main thing is that it was a fear tactic to cause the formation to break more easily. Combination of "They're gigantic" and "Ahh, scary noises". It was the wooden frame clattering, which I got mixed up. It also served to spook enemy horses.

@@Sandrodziej look up the Siege of Vienna.
@henrychurch606217 күн бұрын
@@Sandrodziej I don't think the feathers would be all that heavy. How heavy is a steel knife? similar size and weight to a single metal feather I would wager. Pick up 20 butter knives and you're probably looking at around 2 or 3 lbs of steel. Maybe another 2 for the form they were attached to and another 1/2 pound for the harness. Lets make an assumption though that I'm estimating wrong and we'll double the weight to get a worst case scenario. (Maybe they were thicker than I think, or longer for example) That leaves us with (about) 11 lbs. And that's not so bad. (and again that's a big estimate and some napkin math so don't take it as a scholarly attempt, but I don't really think the wing's weight was much of a factor)

Its far too easy to underestimate how important Kislev is. If the rightfully named "Bulwark of the North" falls, its pretty much game over since every piece of land hiding behind it will be way easier to traverse for the enemy. If Kislev falls, the Empire soon follows. Once the Empire is gone, anything else in the Old World is going to go as well. The Empire thinks they're facing the worst the enemy has. Far from it.

A theme that is strong in the lore of Kislev is that women in many human cultures are the ones trusted with wielding magic, in Bretonnia with the Grail Damsels, and in Kislev with the Ice witches and the Wise Women who make a pact with the spirits. this seems to be a thing in many human cultures in the old world, in Nehekhara, the Empire and Cathay this is far less the case, and I love the variety of all the human cultiures in warhammer so i'm a fan of this, it truly shows that these are all different people with different beliefs and ways of life

Pretty sure they meant what they meant. Poland-Lithuanian common wealth, Russia, the Kievan Rus.... All Eastern Europe. You really think that isn't enough? How about you do some deep research on all Eastern European nations and comeback when you have a comprehensive enough reason as to why they can't be included in this. If you think shared Slavic folklore doesn't reach the Balkans or the Baltic sea, you are tripping. And if you do think that... Your original comment makes no sense.
@ScadrianGhostblood18 күн бұрын
@@NotAnAlphaLegionary they just made a fantasy Russia and called it the representation of all of the slavic cultures. Them adding hussars on bears and references to kozaków doesn't make it any more broad of a representation. It's like having a faction based on China, but calling it also Japanese representation because the faction has ninjas. Also sorry for not liking the fact that the reason why slavic countries for many years where under oppression and weren't able to develop until recently is the main central inspiration behind the only slavic inspired faction in warhammer fantasy. (also Poland is central europe, not eastern. we have a culture that isn't just "shared slavic folklore")
@NotAnAlphaLegionary18 күн бұрын
@@ScadrianGhostblood first: Poland is most definitely eastern Europe. It's as east as you can get before reaching Russia, which isn't part of Europe. Way to fail basic geography. Whilst the region is variously defined, it often includes Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Transylvania as part of Romania." Also what are you even talking about, Poland isn't right before Russia starts. You know that Ukraine still stands, right? And there are big differences between folklore from slavic countries. There are many legends and historical elements they could have used to make it more broadly slavic instead of Russian. Where is warhammer version of Zawisza the black? Where is Dragon Wawelski? Where is Stańczyk? Where is Wernyhora?

Ok I doubt that dj bricky and shy will see this but I hope they do cause my god, they deserve to know. For one, the winged hussars were one of the last major heavy Calvary forces in Europe, and in fact contemporaries to them thought Poland was incredibly backwards for still using heavy Calvary. But anyways, one of the most famous battle the winged hussars partook in was the siege of Vienna, specifically its ending. Basically the Ottoman Empire had lay siege to Vienna for quite a while (years I think but don’t quote me) and Vienna was, at the time, the last major defensive bastion for quite the distance. Had the ottomans been able to take Vienna history likely would have been extremely different. But anyways, the winged hussars along with many other Calvary contingents arrived at a hilltop overlooking the ottoman siege camp. What came next was the LARGEST CALVARY CHARGE, in history, mind this was in 1527, cannons and rudimentary guns were not uncommon at this point. 20,000 people on horse back, in shining armor, proceed to as one charge down the hillside smashing into ottoman defensive lines breaking the siege and with it, ending the last serious push by the ottomans further into Europe. It is truly one of the few moments in history I wish I could see as a third person omniscient perspective.

58:14 The Hag Witches of Kislev can not look different, because they age a lot faster than normal people. Like, you see a "decrepit old woman" and she tells you that she is 27 years old. Once you are born with this "gift" of seeing the spirits of the land, that is your fate. Meanwhile, the Wise Women are basically the group of people to teach the young Hag Witches before their gifts "activate". They also do not directly use magic, but rather make deals with the spirits of the land and have them do stuff.

One of these days they'll accept that Warhammer Fantasy being just fantasy-earth isn't because they thought they'd get away with it but the point. Next they'll be shocked when they realize Bretonnia is France, Albion is England, and Ulthuan is Atlantis. Maybe the true brain blast of Ind being India.

here's a tiny bout of bonus lore to link it to the real world- Kislev is actually a real name; for a month, from the old Gregorian calendar

really good episode and overall a far improvement from the Greenskins episode. DK managed to relatively balance both important characters as well as general lore as well as some of the more nuanced small stuff that really fleshes out the faction and WH fantasy as a whole. the only things that I will say needs improvement (NAPWISS) is that DK should maybe emphasize a bit more that WH fantasy is not a Medieval Dark-High fantasy but a Renaissance/ early gunpowder era dark-high fantasy. I would've liked if he mentioned just a tiny bit about the Streltsi or the fact they have bear-pulled cannons as artillery

I know this series is supposed to be focused on Old World/Fantasy, but honestly I’d really enjoy if Realm of Ridiculous extended into Age of Sigmar. Like, if you guys covered the End Times and then continued with Sigmar, going over the factions in that setting next. Or even if you guys wanted to keep this show to only Old World, just going back and doing part 2s to topics that you couldn’t finish like the Skaven. Basically I just want infinite content

That's about right. Tho as far as how they play in TWW3 they are the space marines. Them and Cathay.

@@MySuperPowerIsITouchGrass Are you saying they are basically super heavy knights errant? Heavily specialized? A swiss army knife faction? I'm not trying to nit pick, I'm just generally confused how you are comparing these two lol
@MySuperPowerIsITouchGrass18 күн бұрын
@NotAnAlphaLegionary sorry for the confusion. Let me see if I can clarify. Role wise Kislev is the first order nation the Chaos factions reach. This means they deal with them more often than any other faction with Cathay being a close number 2. As stated by OP, this makes their role similar to that of Cadia in 40k. Gameplay wise, at least in W3, they are the SM of fantasy. Warriors of Chaos are the elite armored faction of fantasy. In fact, SM and CSM are based on them. Kislev is a reflection of them, with beefy armord infantry that aren't as good as they Choas counter parts but way better than most other order faction. They also got some big monsters like WoC. Kislev does really more on ranged but thats because while their units can compete with WoC, they have fewer models, so they need that ranged DPS to handle units like chosen. Now going forward here is some speculation as to why this is. Current Kislev is the result of a rewrite for the old world. Units like ice guard and frost wyrms did not exist when the faction was last playable in (6th?) edition. Before the Old World got massively reduced in scope, Kislev was going to be a launch faction for the game. This is likely because one of the issues identified by GW with WHFB was that the empire was a difficult starter faction. A horde army that's hard to paint makes for a bad first faction for new playera. The Kislev rewrite was likely an attempt to resolve this issue. Hope this comment helped! Edit: tldr; they are the swiss army knife faction.

I might be in the minority here, but I think Bricky could do a little more active listening. There are a lot of times where DK ends a point, and it's met with silence, so DK goes, "Um, yeah, so,"

@1:28:44 You might not see this Bricky and DK but WH3 has the options to just play the "Quest Battles" for each of the major playable characters. They're scripted and give you preset armies. It's similiar to the Historical Battles feature from the other Total War Titles
