I have the original recording of this given to me by by dear mother (now 96). I remember her playing it on an old HMV radiogram and dancing around our tiny loungeroom with my baby sister in her arms.

Would love to see the whole movie. Stranger in Paradise song is in this movie and it is one of my favorite old songs.

Unfortunately, the film is not available to watch for free (like all classic MGM films), but it's worth purchasing. Gorgeous to look at and Keel is magnificent!

Stranger in paradise is from Borodin's Prince Igor and Baubles bangles and beads from Borodin's second string quartet.

We will never see the likes of magnificence like this today. Hollywood is in the toilet.

The Broadway musical got mediocre reviews BUT because there was a newspaper strike no one saw them. The producers went on the offensive and heavily promoted the show on Television and radio, the first Broadway show to be marketed that way and breaking the elitist reputation live theater had gained in the 30's and 40's.

When I went to college in the 90's, this was exhibit 1 of "orientalism." We were specifically instructed to hate this film. I guess they wanted a war against Muslims or something. Such fraudulent teachers I had. It's beautiful.

Howard Keel was usually so natural in musicals but in “Kismet” he seems mannered and artificial, much like the entire film.

Right. His virility was cramped by camp. Much more forceful as Hannibal in 'Jupiter's Darling', and with a more spirited and witty co-star in Esther Williams. Ann Blyth is just another insipid soubrette, a far cry from her bitch-daughter in 'Mildred Pierce'. She had already bombed in 'Rose Marie', but Freed thought she had been OK in 'The Student Prince' and so dug out another hoary old property for her and Keel. Obviously Kathryn Grayson or Patrice Munsel should have done it.
