Rare recording of Kiss rehearsing at their New York City loft (10 East 23rd Street) in May 1973. I cannot vouch 100% for the authenticity of this recording, but to my ears it sounds like the real deal. And if it's not then, hey, at least you didn't have to pay to hear it!
At the time this recording was supposedly made, Kiss had already performed their first handful of shows and were still taking up residence in local New York clubs (at least one reference to the Daisy (a club in Amityville) can be heard on this tape). They had not yet been signed to a record contract.
Track listing:
-soundcheck
-Strutter
-Firehouse
-Watchin' You
-Let Me Know
-Life in the Woods (false start)
-Life in the Woods
-Acrobat
Kiss is:
Paul Stanley - guitar and lead vocal
Gene Simmons - bass and lead vocal
Ace Frehley - guitar
Peter Criss - drums

When the band started, he was probably the best musician in the band. As the rest of the guys grew musically, Peter regressed due to drug use. Ace was always sloppy, but it was truly his style. No one could ever imitate it. The 4 of them could not have made it in any other line up. The stars aligned and from 1973 to 1978 it was pure magic. Never the greatest musicians, but together, they took over the world for 6 years. I really hope by the end if the road they let Peter and Ace play at least a few songs, IN MAKE UP!!

@@mr.brenman2132 It's not "propaganda". What Paul wrote about Peter is plausible. As drug-addict he had not the discipline with his talent and his social behavior, they needed. Gene said once "I f*cking hate drug-addicts". And Paul said about Tommy: "I love his playing. And I love his WORK ETHIC! "(Paul's mother came from Germany). In another interview: "I don't need anybody to shoot in my head". My (german) teamleader at work usually says: "You don't get paid for your talent. You get paid for WORK!"

Xialong1963 Okay, all of my research says it's real. I guess Ace hadn't fully developed his style at that point. The repeating triplets and slow vibrato bends that so define his sound were not part of his skill set at that point. It was supposedly recorded by Gene Simmons on a two track recording machine in the spring of 1973. It's a Japanese release on Zodiac Records from April of 2014. How they got the tapes is a mystery! Thank you for sharing, as this has been an eye-opening look into KISS' early development. By the way, "Space Invader" is Ace's best album in years. find some samples and enjoy!

@@joescicchitano7753 i think there are two songs here. Love theme from kiss, which did make it on the 1st album, and it leads into acrobat at the end. Acrobat is on Kissology vol 1. And is a different song

One amazing and Legend group right here. I love Ace and Peter. They are all so good together. It's Paul, Gene, Ace and Peter. We love them and always will. Back in the 70's when you were a teen and you saw them for the first time, they made an impression on you forever. That's how I felt. I've loved them ever since.

I agree - same w/Firehouse. They were able to freelance like with live shows. Obviously that's why they were dead in the water until "ALIVE I." Just the same, I wore out the vinyl on each of the 1st three albums.

One of Ace's friends was Eddie Solan, who contributed a great deal to the band "behind the scenes." Among other things, he was a sound engineer, and may have aided in the "tweaking" of this recording here and there.

Pretty cool how clear the one guitar is. The other is gained up but the one is pretty clean. Check out the 2nd song Watching You intro. They complement each other when played together.

I used to live at 14 East 23rd from 2006-2006. It wasn't until months after I moved that I found out Kiss' Loft address. My bedroom studio must've bumped up against the same wall as their rehearsal room.
