I'm so glad to've found your channel! Animalize was my first tour and it's one of my fondest memories of live Kiss, along with the Revenge club tour!! 100% agree on the 80s Gene material being criminally underrated.

We're glad you found us! Another 80's Gene defender is more than welcome here. Animalize was my first show as well, and when my co-host got into them. So special times! JF

I discovered KISS with 'Animalize' through the videoclip 'Heaven's On Fire'. My local library had 'Animalize' on LP, so I borrowed it and made a copy on cassette tape. Love the concept of your channel, and this format of reviewing albums and discussing your experiences with such recordings. 'Animalize' is a special studio album for me because it's my first KISS album. Paul STANLEY's talents as the principal songwriter, lead vocalist, frontman, record producer and de facto leader of the band were essential in keeping KISS relevant. Paul's hard working ethics and his drive were responsible for keeping the band going. Let's be honest, Bozo the CLOWN had checked out to become a Hollywood C-list actor. Long live all eras of KISS and the amazing Paul STANLEY (my favourite member of KISS); Eric CARR (R.I.P. my favourite KISS drummer); Mark St. JOHN; and Bruce KULICK (my favourite KISS guitarist). Thank you for your excellent videos, and keep up your excellent work.

We appreciate all the kind words! Paul was the man in the 80s for sure. I've always felt like Animalize was his baby for all the reasons you named.

Seen the tour in Cleveland and it was a kick ass show, by the way also was just at the last show October 22nd in Cleveland and it might have been the best I’ve ever seen them, Revenge tour is also one of my favorite tours, hard to believe the band I discovered in Kmart when I was 12 in 1975 (my first record I bought there)has continued for 50 years! I remember reading many articles about how they would never last, flash in the pan, the KISS ARMY is proud to have been there all the way to the END OF THE ROAD

In peoples rankings of the kiss albums I am amazed at how low Animalize is ranked and you hear the same thing how Gene had such little input or impact on these 80's albums and I agree with you both, I don't get it neither! The people are just parrot phrasing one another. Lick it up thru Asylum is pure gold and did well commercially, it was their rebirth after the fall in the early 80's as they were right in the mix with all the younger heavy metal bands of the mid 80's and Animalize still holds up to this day! I had owned all the kiss albums on cassette back in the day and today own a selection of the remastered on CD as I'm not a completionist of their discography but Lick it up, Animalize and Asylum are must have music to me and get many listens along with their classic era!

@@anywayyousliceitreviews Gene was on fire 🔥 on Lick it up and Creatures of the night. Great songwriting and singing - the best vocals he ever did in my opinion.🤘 But on Animalize, sorry to say that, he sucks. Wrote more in my comment….

I'm a huge KISS fan and am definitely glad to have discovered this channel! Excellent stuff! Also, and I mean this in all sincerity, I definitely support doing a review of the Peter solo album; while not the greatest album in the KISS discography, it gets far more abuse than it deserves. Keep up the tremendous work!

Another good one boys! Enjoyed the album review and all the reminiscing, although I didn't realize I was so much older! 🤣 I always thought this album was right on the borderline of being a full on metal album, very heavy.

Paul Stanley attacks his guitar with fast moving riffs and scratching the strings and sliding chords, I've Had Enough (Into The Fire) & Under The Gun are amazing uptempo Metal songs. This album is listed as Glam. Um, I gotta think someone don't know Glam died off by 1979-1980. If not even earlier. There's no Glam on this album. Carr is driving us under his beat and taking us home, how do ya do that so fast??? It's Stanley's vocals reaching some new high points and the melodies are very good. Song structure is great, some very cool things going on with these two songs. Then in the middle you just let St. John loose and yes, a billion notes in 12 measures or so works for that time. It was the 80'S. Paul's Get All You Can Take is what sort of sounds like a Creatures.. left over, it has that Keep Me Comin' feel and yet, it's heavier. Good riffing, and it takes a nice minor turn in the bridges, changes the whole sound as he builds up to the chorus. A Zeppelin feel for sure, well what do you expect from a Zeppelin fan? Heaven's On Fire is the single and needed a strong follow up like Under The Gun as the 2nd, but instead we got Thrills In The Night. Heaven's On Fire is an easy 1,4,5 song, sort of, Bluesy jam and depending on which album or cd you play it's in a lot of different keys, usually in between G and A, tape speeds were fun to play with back then. Also be aware Michael James Jackson had a small hand in this production too. Basic tracks. Can you tell he's in the booth, maybe not, but it's a good thing he's there. Heaven's On Fire, I still hear it on Classic Rock stations today. That's nice. It was on the Pop charts back in '84, it was like up to #11 on Billboard. Thrills In The Night however was in my mind, a waste of time, lame and wrong for this record. Structure, vocally, musically and it showed us they couldn't do this song justice in concert either. It just dragged and maybe it made the girls crazy, it made me uncomfortable from the beginning to end. Get it over with!!!

Animalize does continue on where the Creatures... & LIU albums started. Letting Vinnine go and finding Mark St. John, brought in something, a billion lead guitar notes going up and going down. I'm still not crazy about the police siren sounding descending notes at the beginning of a couple songs, not needed. This was a showpiece for Stanley, his baby, more or less. Paul does shine all over this album, vocally he's hitting higher notes than on LIU! Eric Carr is in full blown pounding, double time beats that would wear a person out after 10 minutes, but he did 16-17 song shows at full speed back then, very low body fat after that. I've never really been clear about Stanley's bad ear, if he has hearing in it or not and if not, he did an amazing job producing this record with only one ear. So I gotta think he's got some hearing in the bad ear. I know it's shape was a defect, but I'm just not sure if it works. Three members of this group were grinding away, throwing down tracks and who wasn't there? The guy who talks the biggest talk, Simmons. Being unaware of what was happening in the band at this time, cuz we weren't there, it's a wonder how this album got made. I wonder if Simmons came in and just dropped off tapes in a pile and said "here ya go." I hope he had more of a hand in than that. Being left on his own in the studio and working days and nites then remixing it at the last second like the legend says, he remixed the whole damn thing just hours they say just before it had to ship to the factory for pressing.

Say what you want about Gene and Paul, but with the avalanche of lead guitarists they burned through in the previous two (ish) years, they had a LOT of work to do. They had a lot to hold together, but, you know what? They did!

They say, Paul had to piece Gene's songs together and structure them as they were just pieces of songs when he got them. Maybe a few full fledged demos, but mostly, pieces. So Paul adds intros and solos and tries to piece a song together with at least two verses cuz he didn't have much to work with. Burn Bitch Burn is one of those examples. It's a fun up tempo screamer, it has that fun E-G-A riff that would have been so cool in arenas, how did they not do this one?? I'll tell ya why, Simmons didn't have time oh no let's put it this way, he didn't allow enough time to learn his own songs that Paul had to build and put together make them whole. To perform the songs live he'd have to learn it and Mr. Ego won't do that. Gene's contributions are some good tunes. There's some good writing there, Burn Bitch Burn and While The City Sleeps are arena ready songs. Murder In High Heels & Lonely Is The Hunter are slower and choppy. They sound a touch unfinished. It's a damn shame that they only used three songs from the new album to perform on the world tour. For all the things behind the scenes that had the band wondering if they were gonna be able to make another album, an inner argument between the heads of the band, which was never brought out into the light, Simmons and Stanley were like brothers pissed off at each other, maybe just Stanley, Simmons seems oblivious to what is going on in the band for the next 4 years or so. Glad he had a chance to make a few movies, but the band was and should have been number one on his agenda. Lick It Up had at least 8 songs from that album played live on that tour. This album we got three. Clearly 6 are ready to go, maybe 7. It was still a massive seller, the tour was all over the place and the rotation of the video on MTV pushed it to platinum sales. As the music world was taking in Hard Rock and Rap/Hip-Hop with open arms, even Gangsta Rap, things were changing again. Euro bands were on American radio with Hard Rock songs like Livin' After Midnight & Rock You Like A Hurricane and yes, MTV had a lot to do with this. MTV showed us the bands in live settings or concept videos of drama or silliness, Motley Crue did a lot of that. But it was the Live videos that made us wanna go to the shows. Hard Rock/Metal found it's nitch now, not quite there with the Grammys yet, but that was coming. Overall Anilamize is a good album, I find the remaster from 1997 to still be a bit tinny, needs a bit more bass. Like I said, I still hear Heaven's On Fire on the radio and in the local bars, so someone likes it 40 years later. COOL!!! :)

Very interesting show with great background informations!👍🤘👍🤘 My thoughts about the album Animalize: In my opinion, "Animalize" is one of the worst Kiss albums. Especially because Gene Smmons had his head in Hollywood (acting) at the time and Kiss probably only took a secondary place to him. You can tell by his compositions for the album - absolute crap! Marc St. John (RiP brother!) didn't necessarily enrich the band either. I don't think he was involved in the songwriting at all and his style of playing lead guitar isn't to everyone's taste either. Just speed on the guitar neck is not a sign of quality. What remains are some useful compositions by Paul Stanley, but unfortunately some of them were destroyed by Marc's exaggerated lead guitar playing. My list: I've Had Enough (Into the Fire) 🤘 Under the Gun 🤘 Heaven's on Fire 🤘 Thrills in the Night While the City Sleeps Get All You Can Take 💩 Lonely Is the Hunter 💩💩 Burn Bitch Burn💩💩💩 Murder in High Heels 💩💩💩 💩= Shit 💩💩= Bullshit 💩💩💩= Mega-Bullshit Of course, this is just my personal opinion. I know there are a lot of people who like "Animalize"......of course I respect that! Everyone should listen to what they like... 👍 Keep on rocking and greetings from Germany 🇩🇪🤘👍🎸🇺🇸🌎
