KISSTORY - December 21, 1973 - We opened a 2 night stand at the Coventry in New York City. A planned 3rd night did not happen. Here's Deuce from night 2.

On December 22nd 1973, Paul Stanley was 21, Gene Simmons was 24, Peter Criss was 28 (two days after his birthday), and Ace Frehley was 22. Kiss was young and totally energetic when they first performed in clubs in 1973. WOAH!!!!! 🤘🎸🥁💋

@@DMSProduktions You're most welcome! I'm a sucker for concert footage of KISS prior to 1976...the 1973 - 1975 era, and the first three studio albums prove they had what it takes from the beginning. It's rather disappointing that the original lineup unraveled in such a manner.

This is amazing! I remember seeing it for the first time about twelve or thirteen years ago on Kissology Vol. I, when my "Flaming Youth" started to burn up. It is incredible how they were all set and ready for stardom. Incredible how raw the sound is, how Gene's vocals sound. And all about the moves that were already there almost fifty years back from now... What a journey this might have been. I feel blessed! Forever, and always.

Great plan! That is a herculean effort for any band with no record deal and very little money. They had it down tight from day one. Clearly there is no way to go but up! This time next year its a solid 50 years and it will be a well deserved celebration of colossal achievement. Enjoy it guys! The after party will be mega!

In 1977 I had tickets for my very first concert and they were for Elvis last concert but my Uncle told my Ma that it would be to dangerous. So I gave away the tickets and got tickets to see my favorite rock band “KISS” I was 17 and my Mother went with me. Judas Priest opened for them and there was no security at Roberts Stadium in Evansville Indiana. It was insane the fans were very wild & scary too. Lewd behavior was going on but the concert was incredible. After that Judas Priest was my 2nd favorite rock band. I remember my Mum grabbing plastic she found and cramming in her ears telling me to do the same. She said I’d lose my hearing. She was such a sweet Mom to go with me and it was a very memorable 🎶. @@Spokenfan Thanks for sharing your story! Nice to hear a personal story from a pivotal point in music history, the industry and its business. Elvis dies in Aug, Skynyrd crashed in Oct. Punk was at a bit of its peak. The 80s were on the horizon and a new sound came with it for the decade it was to be itself. 🤘 Rock on brother! Best wishes!

I would have seen them in 1977 but somehow I got in trouble and was grounded... My Hippy Babysitter was giong to take me ... but I don't know what happened.. total bummer. I did eventually see them in 1996!

Yep, the whole concert was included on KISSTORY 3, BUT...and a lot of people don't realize this, a couple of songs were included in the KISSTORY 1 as an easter egg. KISSTORY 1 was the best collection, of course.

When this was made the biggest albums were Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Elton John) and Band on the Run (Wings), The Carpenters, Steve Miller, The Who, Tres Hombres (ZZ Top), Alice Cooper, ELP, Greg Allman, Half Breed (Cher), Uriah Heep, Mott the Hoople, Poco and several others. Disco was starting to happen. Poco is interesting because this was the band and album that the movie "Almost Famous" was written about. It was changed for the film but this is what was happening when KISS recorded this performance.

Also note a few months after this was recorded in 1974 a little known band of teenagers in Los Angeles named Mammoth (Van Halen) would be recording their very first demos and performing backyard parties in Pasadena.

This was obviously before they were even a household name in Queens, let alone NYC. And they absolutely sounded as tight and raw as Alive I. I can only imagine how great those early times were. And those clubs too, throughout NY and LA and everywhere else where a band could launch themselves... if they had what takes. It's very different today unfortunately.

Thanksgiving 2019 I told my oldest sister that she failed me. I explained that back in 1975 KISS played at the Cap Center in Largo, MD twice that year (May and again in November) and that she failed to get me to either one of those shows. She didn't see it that way. I did, after 45 years finally see them live. I saw them as part of the End of the Road tour August 2019 at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow VA.

Comment: - As an article in Creem succinctly stated: "The Brats, KISS and Teenage Lust are now performing in Coventry, with a host of average Queens bands for the evening." This December 1973 article by Dave Marsh provided an excellent insight into the then-current New York the glitter scene. He was somewhat more mixed in describing the band: "This group looks like they just stepped out of an underground Pink Flamingos movie, which leads me to believe that I was right all along when I thought the glitter madness was an ugliness contest. But KISS Music it sounds like the most thoughtful, controlled sound around, and the stage show is just as professional” (Creem, 12/73). - While this show was also recorded on video, just like the 12/22 concert, only two songs survive on tape....but in much better image quality than is currently here !!! These two preserved songy from the tape were also on KZbin, but they are no longer there!!!

You can get the whole concert on KISSOLOGY 3. And just now, I looked it up and there it was on KZbin. So its still there, just maybe hard to find sometimes. I think the full show has 5 or 6 songs maybe more. Also, a song appears on KISSOLOGY 1 as an easter egg. Just click on KISS. That paragraph from CREEM is amazing. I wish I had run across that. I agree. After Dynasty, I was sure they would put out a hard rocker. The Elder confused me. But by then, I was already a big fan of Van Halen and The Blizzard of Oz. So my heart wasn't broken that bad. I found it hilarious that no other members of KISS were inducted into the Hall of Fame, although they should have inducted Eric Carr.
