Korea had very strict censorship on music, and other media, all the way up to the late '90s. That's why there were so many pirated releases of foreign acts. Bands like Kiss and Sabbath were among the most censored. For years, the only well known Sabbath tune in Korea was 'Changes'. It was a slow piano tune, deemed non-offensive, so it got released. No one heard 'Children of Grave' or 'Under the Sun', and the sort unless they were pirated. Accessing hard rock and metal was truly rebellious in those days. I've been living in Korea for almost 25 years now and have many friends here who grew up in the '70s, '80s, and '90s in that counter-culture. One friend learned how to speak English from listening to pirated copies of of Iron Maiden LPs. You can visit used LP shops in Seoul today and get tons of those pirated LPs for cheap. A lot of local music at the time was excellent as well because it was often underground and censored. It wasn't the glossy corporate K-pop Korea is known for today. It was genuine counter-culture art.

Bak-Pan!! I haven't heard that word since i went downtown Seoul, and I found these in an underground Black Market. A girlfriend took me there back in 1986, when i was stationed in South Korea in the US Army there. I found a shop that were selling these bootlegs. They cost $1.00 Each! I bought 10 for $10. Zeppelin, Metallica, Alcatrazz, etc. I did have the Purple Paul Stanley. They were garbage, and i threw some out. They copied the USA releases on a copy machine for the thin carboard covers. The LP's if not warped were junk. I remember heard the snap, crackle, pops, skips. Copied from a USA LP. I still have a few that I kept. The commercial releases were pretty cool. Always came with insert/lyrics. Lot of my LP's were altered song listings due to govt. Ozzy, Zeppelin, Judas Priest. Fast forward, 35 plus years, I saw these Bak-Pan records showing up on ebay for astronomical prices!! I couldn't believe it. I'm now, living in South Korea, and started collecting vinyl again. I still these bak pans pop up now and again online markets. Not many used record stores in Seoul. But, they got to be out there somewhere.....the search is on. Enjoyed the episode!

I have the red RARO that I just bought in Tokyo. That stamp is a tax certificate. I used Google translate to check it out. Says Republic of Korea and Tax Certificate.
