Especially when it's coming from someone like Paul who has the same clout and money as Gene so he can't flex his ego about fame or money to silence whoever is criticizing him. Notice how fast Gene shuts up when he ran into someone with the same power and money he has? Gene is smart enough to know that in 2020 the generation of people who made him feel special are dying off and a whole new world of people are growing up not giving a damn who Gene is. It bruises his ego like nothing else could. Hence why he waves fame and money around as his only defense. I truly believe he’s unhappy if not miserable inside. He’s a classic example of someone with all the money and possessions someone could want yet still walks around bitter and pissing hate on everything because even with all he has, he still can’t buy the one thing he wants; happiness. People who are truly well off, truly have everything they could want, are fucking happy about it. He flexes hard to be a spectacle for his fading attention and to fool others into thinking he’s living a happy life. When’s the last time you saw him laugh or smile and mean it? They had to pay their debts more than once. Obviously before the Kiss crazed days from mid 1975, until 1979. I remember reading an interview with their first album producer (Ritchie Wise, I think), and he highly praised Gene's musicianship. I just watched a video of Paul & Gene from 1985. In the video, Paul's calls out Gene for being a story teller about the children he has claimed to have fathered. @TheTN24 breaking even by the Revenge tour. Gene and Paul...while more or less well off financially had avoided actually dipping into their own pockets to support the band. By the reunion tour they had a choice. Keep the band going out of their own pockets in which they would have gone broke or put the makeup back on. Gene and Paul have reaped the rewards many times over, both are more financially sound now that they were at the high point of Kiss in the 70's. Always remember, it's a business.
