The music industry has struggled in the digital era because even though there are plenty of good new artists, there isn't the same exposure for them that we had in the 60s-90s. Radio is dead, MTV is dead, it costs half your rent to see a concert and there is a lack of smaller venues to see new bands in a lot of areas, and streaming is a corrupt cesspool run on payola so even though you might never want to hear rap it's all that gets recommended because bots are gaming the algorithm.

The distribution of music has zero to do with the quality and content of rock and roll. Genes just butthurt because he can't make money like he used to due to the distribution methods - but that's not a reflection of rock itself. Rock and roll IS dead pre se, but only because record companies and radio stations dictate THEY want to get airplay. It's dictated what we listen to - IF you only went by mainstream methods. Rock isn't dead, it's just not allowed to get out there and thrive. But as far as the next 'big thing' - if you're looking for a new band to take the world by storm like the old ones did, forget it. So long as the marketing and return on interest is dictated by record companies there will never be a new band to literally dominate the world, they wouldn't get the finance promotion and opportunity to. But thank God Beyonce gets promoted, right??!?

Rock n Roll is alive and well, in many different shapes and forms…. As of right now, it’s just not mainstream… in my opinion bands need to revert back to sounding like bands, with a live feel. Rock music these days is horrifically overproduced, everything sounds robotic. Especially drums… hard to tell the difference between an actual drummer vs. a drum machine… all the imperfections are gone, but it’s the microscopic imperfections that gives the music it’s soul… nothing sounds genuine and nobody wants to listen to soulless robot rock… but once something has been declared “dead” that’s when someone comes along and changes everything…
@tommyfraz. Жыл бұрын
I think they’re both right, and wrong, at the same time. They both have solid points, but it doesn’t cover the whole topic. “Rock” is dead. We had the “sub”genre explosion of the 80s, and it separated fandoms. We don’t have a “Stones or Beatles” that satisfies 95% of the fandoms. The biggest hard rock bands are only accepted by 50% of the audience at best. Yes, we are getting a revival in “rock” and venues are starting to feature them more. You can catch good shows regularly, and as stated, streaming has made everything accessible.

its the business that killed rock music. theres really no money in rock and roll. all the radio stations are owned by the same companies and play the same 10 songs over and over across multiple stations. nobody has the attention span to listen to a great guitarist for more than 4 bars. to become popular today you need someone to do something stupid on tic toc while playing a 30 second clip of your song. everyone focuses on the singer and don't care about the other band members. I have a friend that thinks Steven Tyler name is Aerosmith. its why Gwen Stephani can be huge and no body gives any thought to No Doubt. its just easier and more profitable to have the song writers write a song and they get a 1 singer or rapper to sing it play it 20 times a day on the radio stations and then sit back and watch the people buy the album. bands write there own music so its more risky for a business. then they have to pay all members of the band.

Back in those early times there was television and radio pushing all these artists, and they only pushed successful artists, which elevated them to god like levels in the eyes of the masses since you had to be big to be on tv or radio. These days with platforms like KZbin, TikTok etc, and the explosion of cheap and convenient tech, anyone can put themselves in front of the world at any moment. It’s not like back in the day where only artists signed to major labels got studio time and media attention. Now everyone has access. That’s why even if an artist is big, they rarely take on that larger than life appearance, because people treat things more disposable now, which is a side effect of the fast paced evolution of tech we’re given access to.

Gene is right. There aren’t just big name bands like the Beatles and such out there anymore. But, rock and metal are far from dead. There are some amazing metal bands out there right now. Now to Paul’s point. Let’s be real, people are going to see his son’s band because he has a famous father and famous last name. That is helping tremendously even if he didn’t want it to. They both have valid points, but I will say again rock and metal are far from dead. You have to evolve in the modern age and you have to good and smart at marketing. Look at BilMuri. Johnny Franck does an amazing job marketing and promoting BilMuri. And he can make a living doing it. Gene and Paul both are from a totally different time so neither will fully understand how the industry has changed. Although music labels are doing better than ever. They never really suffered.

How do you feel about Anonymous 's Comment? I hate it😌. It's not hip hop. Look to the attitude 1986 where they were taking everyone else's genre and just talking over it. By the way the sampling was going to be outlawed because it's plagiarism. And it's not even attempt to control it in the entertainment complex. He's the only person with the money that's willing to speak out against it.

I think he’s right, in the sense that, there will be no new band (or artist) that releases a debut album in 2023, that will still be being played and talked about in 30-40 years time. Those times are gone. There will never another Beatles…or even another Kiss, Van Halen, AC/DC, Maiden etc…. I’ve discovered a lot of new bands, mainly on Frontiers Revords, but we won’t ever see a néw band become legends. As Metallica once sang….Sad By True…..

I don’t think rock is dead and I don’t think Gene meant that. I think what he means is that their are no new artist and bands coming out like the ones he listed. Sure all the great rock bands he listed will continue to do their thing and will gain new fans. But where are the up and coming bands that develop into greats?I’m still looking cus their no where to be found, which is why I agree with Gene. Rock is still alive, the problem is the flame isn’t as bright because all we have are the greats from 70’s 80’s 90’s and parts of 2000’s. Their is nothing new to stoke the fire and at some point as music changes, the fire will die off with no “new wood” to keep it going.

One reason physical media hasn't picked up a lot is that new CDs are typically rather expensuve, $15-$20. add to that the face that only 1-3 singles get promoted by the labels out of 10-12 tracks on the album, and it's rate that anybody will want to pay $15 for 3 songs. Another thing: many domestic American bands sound similar; there isn't the diversity that there is in Europe and Asia. Where are the American versions of The HU, Otyken, Nini Music or even Within Temptation? They're relegated to small labels if they get signed at all. Canadian acts BB like Anvil, that have been around for decades, take day jobs now to support themselves. Unless your name is Dave Grohl, or whichever one hit wonder pops up, you're drowned by the pop people. I lie acts like Band Maid, the HU, KrashKarma, Leo Moracchioli, Doll Skin, etc. They're not getting the big press in the States. That' why rock music has slowed doen. Nobody at the big labels stands behind them and pushes now.
