My first job in Electronics [1967] was testing precision resistors. Precision wire-wound non-inductive resistors were wound half way in one direction, half way in the other, with a wire that had an intrinsically low temperature coefficient. The trend was toward 1% metal film resistors in arrays with cancelling temperature coefficients to remain extremely stable over temperature. We used a tertiary standard Kelvin Bridge, with beakers of oil at room and elevated temperature in which to immerse each resistor to calculate its TC. we noted each one's absolute value and TC, and added them together with canceling TCs to achieve the final "perfect' resistor, or voltage divider. The Stanford Linear Accelerator project bought a lot of our stuff. Cheers, --bd

Eddie You da man!!! 😊 I used to be a self proclaimed ‘Audiophile,’ and I could tell the difference in fractions of Hertz, between cables! You believe that, right? 🙄😂 Please do a Speaker cable Video. I had friends that claimed they could tell this and that, I dont know? I never cheapened out on my connections, but the ‘Source’ was always the most important aspect of a High Fidelity Sound System. I ran a higher end Kenwood DC Integrated Amplifier, and a Dual turntable, with Shure cartridge, tracking at a little over a gram and a 1/4 or so. Used a Discwasher and Zerostat system on the records. Aww, I miss those days.

I might still have my discwasher and antistatic system. I don't remember the name - so it could have been Zerostat... you bring back memories.

Curiously enough in getting my new workbench setup sorted for dialling amplifiers in, I recently tested some giant aluminum clad motor braking resistors on my Dayton Audio DATS V3 ..Amazingly they came in almost smack on the 8 Ohms specified, and despite being designed for general purpose industrial use, they exhibit *zero* inductance, which was a welcome bonus. So yes, whilst cheap for power resistors, I see no down sides to using them sofar :)

Not relying on resistance and using impedances is what made NAD 3020 such good real-world amplifiers in the early 80s and revolutionised amp topologies towards current delivery into low impedances.

Yes - NAD is one of the great ones. I should review the schematic for this amp;)

Air core wire wound resistor will have a magnetic field generated which will have an affect in testing an amplifier.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 11 күн бұрын
Yes normally it would - but if it is non-inductive - there is no magnetic field;)

What do you think of grounding boxes quite common in hifi.? Where you would have a capacitor resistor and an inductive possibly fed to ground Earth. Give us the statistics on the graph if its beneficial.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 11 күн бұрын
Thanks for asking. In short - there is nothing that Earth ground can do to improve the sound of any system. It is that simple. I did a video that you might find interesting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZLUlHeCabdkq7c

I did some work looking at a 220K carbon composite resistors in a valve ampllifier, where voltage swings can be 300V. Firstly noisy as hell, it was all over the place. It also has a non-linear element where the resistance drops with applied voltage, mostly over 160V so it compresses the amplification a tad. The third question was how fast did it do this? I didn't go further, but with a 1KHz sine, the exacts same voltage compression was present as with a DC test.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog Күн бұрын
Thanks for the great question. Yes resistors also have a voltage rating. Many are not rated for 300 VDC, so it is common to use 2 or even 3 in series. If the resistance changes with applied voltage - that is a great sign that it is not rated for that voltage. At audio frequencies, especially at 1 kHz, there should not be a change. Load resistors have more current so inductance can show up a bit as shown here.

Interesting measurements, but it is obvious that you are not by far a real audio guy. But a measurment guy. Constructive criticism: Your sound setup is obviously really bad. Thin, cold, hollow, canny and harch, with an unnatural boosted, sissling treble. Accoustic treatment in the room and better mic setup could be a start to get a way better and warmer sound. And a better reference sound playback equipment and setup so that you _too_ can actually hear that the sound right now is actually really, really bad. Good luck.✋🙂
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 10 күн бұрын
Thanks for your constructive feedback;) Ok - so you think I am not an audio guy because I care about what really makes a difference? Is an Audiophile today - a guy that lives on the placebo effect? There are many of us that love music (definition of Audiophile) that also want to 'KNOW' what really makes a difference. Thus there are the believers camp and the measurements camp. Both are audiophiles but the 'believers' have taken the word and think it is theirs. I am an engineer making videos - and I hope to educate more than entertain. I am in a lab - not a listening room. The equipment that I have is not low cost - nor is the time that I spend producing these videos. You are the first to complain about the quality of my audio for a long time - since I did do an upgrade a couple years ago. I hope the quality of my audio is adequate to get my point across. BTW - what did you think of the content?
@JeyDeeSweden
@JeyDeeSweden 9 күн бұрын
@@KissAnalog Hey🙂 Judgement about audio sound quality is always subjective and a question of personal taste, and always will be. And. Nothing wrong at all with that. Just as personal judgements about how different food tastes. But the fact that you have a actually bad sounding audio setup tells me that you do not REALLY care about how it actually sounds. But you seem to really love to measure. And. Nothing wrong with that. It is a free choice and a personal choice. The bad Sound quality: As compared to another audio youtube channel example: Listen to for instance to "Darko Audio" here on youtube. Whith simply exellent sound. (Again. In my personal estimation). In order to actually hear differences between individual components in your signal chain you have got to have a really good total playback setup: Otherwise the eventual differences with absolute, scientific certainty will DROWN in the mud hole of your own bad sound setup. (Listening rooom setup and audio playback equipment.)
