Great video as always! I do really like your usage of the 7" cardboard, it make it wary easy to compare, rather then if you only did try to point it out. :-) About you correcting yourself, I think that you may find it works better if you record your speak, the same way as when you make the main recording, that way, your sound is the same, even if you are not using the video part of your corrections. :-)

For me, besides cost, important items are: the minimum signal level (V/div), bandwidth (and flat bode plot type measurements - no peaking), high BW primarily for measuring fast rise times, a big range of measurement and decoding, quality/reliability and company reputation. I worry about aliasing at higher frequencies with ADC sampling. I don't see a lot of reviews looking at the -3dB roll-off nor trying to trigger on and analyze a small (i.e.,

watched this video while researching what scope to get it was really helpful for me. i did order the gw instek but found out it is only 1gig total and is divided throughout the 4 channels. also got bummed out that it didnt have decoding and i didnt understand if it had a trigger out but it says open collector/ go no go. is that trigger out or something better i dont know? the siglent has trigger out and i felt that was talked about alot in other scope reviews so must be a good thing to have. so i ordered the siglent sds 1104x-e and first thing i noticed was how much more clear the screen looked to me and the fact that the top of the screen was not blocked when the scope sat a little lower than eye level. very cool i thought. the bottom menus do turn off on the siglent the 4 channel scope has that menu off button on the far left side where as the 2 channel one i dont see the button so may be a work around to get the lower menus turned off. the screen does not grow or shrink like the gw does when the menus are turned off but for the most part the siglent seems to have a much better screen in my option for viewing even if the bars dont grow or shrink from the menus being turned on or off. i really do like the adjustment dials on the gw being a set per each channel but the siglent is very easy also to adjust between channels by just having to select what channel you want to adjust and use the same controls to do the same movements, it is very easy and not that big of a deal. i do like the gw better as far as that goes but the fact the 1GSa/s is actually divided and the siglent has dual 1gsa's then quad 500 MSa/s and decoding and cool color changing stuff for hot spots and just very user friendly help info per button hold down and images with help info in them seems better for me being a newb. i wouldnt mind keeping both scopes to learn what the differences are and not feel like i might be sending something back that i wish i didnt but in the end id rather use that money on other test equipment and just go with my gut feeling that the siglent was better and that the wording on the gw was misleading and not cool as far as the 1GSa/s part goes. i dont really know what im doing and wanted one in this price range to build off of and learn if i even need say a higher dollar one. kinda also why i went with the siglent it has more options and being $100 more i feel there is a reason for that and the reason i think is because of the decoding and 100MHz and dual 1GSa/s and trigger out vs gw @ 50Mz and just 1GSa/s across the 4 channels and not sure if it had a trigger out or what open collector is? also got that mic sig differential probe and hantek amp clamp and load tester oh and a AWG just a cheap one that was offered with the gw when i fist orded it saying other customers also order this when getting this. so yeah kinda went a wall but iv been wanting one for awhile now id say since 2014 when i first started learning and fixing electronics and learned that it was easy for me and something i wanted to learn more of and really needed to get an o scope that wasnt just a limited hand held one. the 2 channel 200MHz siglent one caught my eye and funny thing is i canceled my order of the gw then ordered that one and was like wait no i want 4 channel then went back and re ordered the gw and canceled the siglent 2 channel. lol its been fun i think this is why iv waiting so long to get one im not good at getting stuff if i dont really understand what it is im getting and well lets just say theres alot to an o scope. not to mention what ones are hackable and what not. i gave up on that after feeling siglent most likely wanted to have one that is as good as a hackable one and maybe even better since thats got to be just killing there market dang 1054z anyways. sorry for the story just thought you would get a kick out of it and wanted you to know i like your videos and look forward to learning more on electronics and using o scopes hopefully more on the siglent and who knows maybe ill upgrade to a better gw like you have some day.

I asked GW Instek about the sampling rate, and the way they describe it - it sounds like the same as Siglent. You can get the full 1 GHz on two channels, but if all 4 channels are used, it divides 1 GHz between 2 channels, so you get 500 MHz for each of the 4 channels. GW Instek”s deep memory is dedicated 10 M per channel. While Siglent divides 14 M between 2 channels. So if one channel is used you get 14 M, but if 2channels are used you will get 7 M each. They both have excellent 1 Mpts FFT and 4 channel versions have Bode plot application I’ll in, so I think they are so near the same. I never use the ext. trigger, but you are right, this output is not provided on the 4 ch GW. But it does have the ability to turn off menus which I like. But both screens are nice big 7” either way. If you have both, try them both out , but if you like the Siglent’s dig bus decoding, then that might be the wat to go. I think both scopes are great options, so I’m sure you will be happy with whatever choice you make. Thanks for sharing your experience! Can’t wait to hear how it goes!

@@KissAnalog i still have both i planned on sending the gw back this week. i will look at it more but i do remember seeing on the screen when i would turn on 2 channels it would drop to 500m then when i turned on 3 it went to 250m i think then stayed at 250m with all 4 on. ill double check i think it only did it when i had the points count way up. its for sure a nice scope and i really do need to play with both a little more before i feel like im making the right choice. the quick start guide says 1GSa/s, Max.

Nice video. I think, ultimately, it shows there's not a lot in it at this price range - esp. if you pay GBP on a 1:1 basis to USD (which we do for "insert nonsensical profiteering reason here".) We could add in the ability to decode SPI/I2C - useful for things like Microcontroller debugging - which the GW Instek doesn't seem to even have as an option and that might bump them even closer together. The sample rate might be worth scoring on: as you (sort of) mentioned, some scopes split it over each channel in use - so 250MSa/s if all 4 (or even 3 like the Rigol); others, like the Siglent, will split it over channel pairs - so 1GSa/s for 1& 2 and again for 3&4 - which makes it useful if you use two channels in this way, and the worst being 500MSa/s. The GW, you say, gives you 1GSa/s on each channel which is pretty amazing at this price level and I'm not convinced - I suspect it gets split if more than 1 channel is being used (they talk about 'each single channel' for sampling rate and 'every channel' for the memory points. I don't know how the Owon compares in this respect, perhaps the same. I suspect what the deciding factor would be here is (a) price; and (b) usability/how it looks - and I think that the GW Instek would still win on that basis! I don't know though - I quite like the SPI/I2C debugging and the 1GSa/s on 2 ADCs so suspect that I would stick with the Siglent. I just need to persuade the wife that a scope is a cool thing to have!
@KissAnalog

Thank you! I appreciate the support and great information!! The OWON actually divides the sample rate between all 4 channels, but in this case I think that’s ok. Great info! Two questions, in what likely scenario do I need more than two channels, and where is a good place to buy GW Instek 1104E?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks - that's a great question! Two channels is great for comparing two signals - like the input and output of an Amplifier. If you had a 3rd channel, you could monitor some other signal and compare it to the first 2, or you can monitor a current at the input or output. With 4 channels, you can monitor both current and voltage at input and output. This would go for a power supply as well. Now with 2 channels, you can use one as a reference and move the 2nd channel around to see basically the same thing, it just takes a little longer. Here's a link to the 2 channel, and from this link you can see the other GW options. amzn.to/3pPknjx

Very informative video, however, I would do the evaluation in the following way: I would devide the sum of points of each osciloscope with its price. That way you can get an exact measure how much you pay per each individual point, or functional contribution in the overall set of features...😀 By doing so, you get that a ratio between your money and the features you actually get for it, expressed as [$/point]. According to that metric, the GW Intek GDS 1104E scores best with 13,93 $ per functional point, and the worst value for your money you get from Siglent where each functional point or feature point you pay 18,48 $ per functional point.

You're on the right track I believe but I don't think all features are equally important. Adding more weight to features you feel more important would yield a better over all numeric review. For example screen size is a pretty low priority one as for example the Siglent has both the option for an external monitor via HDMI as well as remote control over ethernet or USB. In addition the screen sizes aren't really that different in these four scopes that it would make a real difference anyway.

@@KissAnalog No Problem I am looking for a scope myself so let me add some more confusion 🙂Your links shows a : GW Instek GDS-1054B which BTW is much more expensive in Europe as usual. I guess that your video is about the GDS-1054B right? Fun part, looking at the picture, it shows the GDS 1104B. This model should be 100MHz and costs about 750Euro. For me overkill but I am still tempted to buy it. other option for me is the GDS-1202B which is 2 channel and 200MHz. I think I will flip a coin to decide.

Only just starting the video, what stood out immediately was the video quality. Picture is sharp, clean, clear and natural looking. Whatever you're recording with, however you're editing/processing keep doing it! I'd be curious to know. ::edit to add:: DS1054Z owner, had it for a few years now, got it when there were fewer choices. Have unlocked all the options in mine which is dead easy, so now have 100MHz 24Mpt memory and all the triggers and decoding options. One thing to note looking at your score sheet is that unless I'm mistaken the Rigol only has 12Mpts memory standard, the 24Mpts is an option. Sadly it's worth noting the Rigol software is pretty rubbish. At 800x480 the Rigol screen is 'good', not poor or outstanding. Some of the features available now make the Rigol less appealing, and the competition is good news for those of us looking for an economy scope. A few things that have come some way since the 1054 was released are even better intensity graduated displays, better memory depths, FFT and waveform/s. Honestly not sure what I'd pick now, the Owon does have some clever stuff and a larger, higher res screen. The battery option depending on how much $ could be handy for portable and/or floating use. It's still lousy that so many trigger and decoding functions are 'options', there was a scope released recently that bucked that trend but it's almost 3am local here and my brain is about done. Cheers!

Thank you! I’ll list my equipment later. I think Rigol is now unlocking all features in that series. Very capable scope. I think a Siglent and GW Instek are great options too. I do like the battery option and sharp screen on the OWON, but the one I had the FFT was not working properly. I hope they have corrected that. Plus the cursors needed some work, but they are fairly new to the game... Do you have any requests for a subject for a video?

GW instek is 1GSa/s shared between all channels, so if 4 channels are used you have 250gsa/s. Siglent 1104x-e has 2 ADCs, so 500gsa/s if all 4 channels are used, and full 1gsa/s if 1-2 channels are used.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this up. Yes Siglent has 2 ADCs, and I think it operates with one ADC dedicated to CH1 & CH2, and the other dedicated to CH3 & CH4. So, if you use 2 channels, one from each ADC, then you can get the 1GSa/s on each, but if you use say CH1 & CH2, or CH3 & CH4, then it drops to 500 mSA/s. So, if you are only using 2 channels, you would want to use 1 from each pair. Is that the way yours works? This is from memory, so I could be wrong;) My GW Instek MDO operates just a little bit nicer I think, it will let you use any 2 channels at 1GSa/s, but if you use 3 or more it drops each down to 500 MSa/s.

I have just purchased a scope in the same price ballpark, but still in transit, so I don't know if it is any good or if it will even be delivered, as it was quite a bit lower then what regional sellers sold it here for.. One important factor for me was no noisy fan, and that is more or less the norm on cheap scopes.. 100mhz/1ghs, 80.000wfm, 29mb-memory,3ns-rise,20hz-bandwithlimitH/L, 256k grading.color and that jazz, HDMI, video killed the radiostar, 8". touch, 4 channel. final price will be a tad over 400 bucks (USD) but its unknown vendor and not a big player. Will definitely be taking a closer look at your scope-videos when it arrives and hopefully also lean on your knowledge.. I also had a good eye on the Rigol MSO5072 2ch. 70mhz/8ghz, as that, seems hackable 350mhz even channels (4) and can be had for around 1150USD though that would be way overkill for my needs, but the rather dull screen, on that model did let a lot to be desired. Thx for the video, but what about the analog-like display with a good grading to sense variety.. not something you prioritize.?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 жыл бұрын
Jacob, that sounds like a great scope. It might be from a manufacturer of scopes that go by better known names and they decided to make one under their own name. Let me know the name and what you think of it when you receive it. I do like the persistence especially on a color grade scope, but honestly it isn’t used that often. Analog scopes used that to basically get storage on the screen for a few seconds:).

If you're an analog guy; The fundamentals/key functionality to look for would be: Bode plotting, SPO and AWG-support. If you do digital stuff then it's: Serial decoding and memory segmentation. Whichever you buy, in this range is so-so. I've bough Owon in 2013 for occasional pojects. I think it was not ON longer than 10 hours and now is not working properly anymore. Contacted Owon, no response so be ready for that scenario. I do not know if other Chinese company service is any better than this. Probably you can do something if thing is in warranty and if not, be ready to pay another $500. Think of it as cell-phone: need to buy it every few years, or PC, laptop, whatever. Digital scope is same as other digital 'stuff'. Becomes obsolete quickly and probably won't last forever. When I've bought my Owon 7102 and read about occasional unhappy 'user' I though .. yeah ... I will not be that unlucky. Also I could not get even spare parts if I've wanted to replace main board as I am not even sure what is wrong with it. So I could end up spending few hundred bucks and not fix the problem. So at the end have to accept the reality and maybe go for a new one and kind of like this Siglent - not exactly sure why, but will be good for what I do.

@@KissAnalog Hah ... have to take back at least half what I've said. Owon site messages did not work but email did. After I've sent one I've got quick answer and in three days owon sent me a patch that fixed my problem. So my scope still works as before. But the problem remains: if you apply new firmware it may cause problem and since there is no firmware backup (at least I don't know how to make one) you get stuck as you also do not know what the problem is. You may think it is the hardware issue. Also (apology for talking about different scope here) reason I've went for firmware update was that after going to 'save' and 'record' function my waveform becomes unstable. After updating firmware it became unstable all the time but luckily now i've got two firmwares one I know works fine. Until owon fixes other bug.

I think all new oscilloscopes should ditch their screens and opt for external touch panels. Preferably connected with USB C PD cables; one cable for power and data from the scope. I might also suggest doing the same with the controls to break it out to a control surface. You then have a nice compact box with just lead connectors. You can then mix and match controls and screens for your own needs. A small screen could be good for in the field but I think something like a 16 inch screen for your bench is more practical. The actual scope I think would be cheaper.

It cannot be done better from a scientific point of view, although you need to assess the box and the colors of the cables from 1 to 5 as always. From an adult point of view I have laughed a lot.

Thank you! I’m comparing specs and I’ve had 30 years plus of using oscilloscopes so not so weird. I’m not talking about build quality or what you might experience in using them, I’m trying to compare using specs. If one car will go 30 miles per hour and the other will go 50 miles per hour - do you have to drive both cars to compare how they will work? No, it is obvious that one will go faster.

@@KissAnalog I understand, but with some cheap oscilloscopes it seems impossible to make a decent measurement, they can just be too inaccurate to measure low voltages. which should be a very basic thing.. (like FNIRSI has a bad reputation in this f.e.)
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog Жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm sure that there are scopes that have worse specs then the ones I listed here. I chose proven scopes that have good reputations. Comparing specs as I did, the scopes that I show have either 1mV or 0.5mV vertical resolution. The FNIRSI that I looked at has 50mV vertical resolution. So, yes the FNIRSI would not make this list. What FNIRSI model are you referring to? I can take a look. BTW, you have to give FNIRSI credit for showing this performance in the spec - and not hiding it.
@winandd8649
@winandd8649 Жыл бұрын
@@KissAnalog The FNRSI is the 1014D model. It seems o be unusable to measure anything blow 1V. I saw a review where an input of 500mV DC was measured by the unit as 145mV... That is how extreme off these measurements are 😳 An oscilloscope is a measuring instrument, so you want one you can trust, or else it's useless..
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog Жыл бұрын
Wow! I don't have any experience using a FNRSI, so that is one reason - besides its specs - that I didn't even consider it. When a scope has specs so far out from the others - I am skeptical.

@@KissAnalog That one is $700+ .. were you looking at the GDS-1054B which is around $400 dollars? That one also only has one 1Gs/s ADC which gets divided across all 4 channels.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 жыл бұрын
El Jefe @El Jefe. I found the GDS-1054B on Amazon for about $332. My MDO version splits the sample rate when looking at more than 2 channels, so I get the full 1GSa/s with two channels. I’ll check with GW Instek on the GDzS series. But for the 50MHz oscilloscope, even if it divided the sample rate 4x the 250MSa/s still gives 5 samples per cycle which is 2x the min required by the Nyquist criterion. And is equal to the Siglent SDS1104x-E on this video as it is a 100MHz bandwidth. And is twice as good as my Siglent 200MHz scope. Thanks for the great comment!!
@endoracing
@endoracing 4 жыл бұрын
I am still leaning towards the 1054b but it is easy to modify to work at 100mhz from what I have read. At that point the sampling is a bit low but only in the fringe case of needing 4 channels over 50mhz

@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 5 жыл бұрын
Great question! I think 2 channels are fine, but this was meant to offer a scope that you would likely never want or need an upgrade. However, if you are looking at your output and input voltages, but you also maybe want to monitor your inrush current with a current probe, then 3 channels would be needed - or you simply take the measurement twice and move the probe.

Also, in circuits that have both analog and digital sections, it can be advantageous to view an analog signal against the the digital signals that either control it or react to it. 2-channels can make this rather difficult.

Browarus Pierogus Thanks for the comment! I completely agree that the big scope manufacturers are way overpriced! At work we use scopes that cost in the 10s of thousands. So these scopes with these features for $500 or less, comparatively, are great deals.

The major cost driver is the input stage - look at the price jumps 100-200-500mhz... I went Siglent 2 ch 200Mhz... but really most home users do not need above 100mHz. I want to do switching work with MOSFETS and IGBT - so I had 200Mh min - wanted 4 channel, but could not swing the 2x price.

I stick with HP-Keysight. A used HP or Keysight for the same money is DEFINITELY better than a cheaply made scope for the same money. The HP stuff was made for industry and had to be utterly the top quality, and thus had the horrible original price. The cheap copies use stuff that is consumer grade and are nowhere near the quality of the HP. Used HP-Keysight scopes in great condition are now regularly available on ebay for bargain prices! Getting a $20,000 scope for $500 is a no brainer.
@KissAnalog

I agree, I also like the value in used equipment. However, unless you can find a top level brand name - the specs just are not there in regards to deep memory. The high bandwidth and high sampling rate just does not pay rewards without the deep memory. I just got a new Tektronix scope that cost around $25000, and it is hard to get a good pix - both the low frequency ripple across time and being able to zoom in and get a high resolution. For switching power supplies, it is important to see low frequency ripple - and being able to zoom in on fast rise times. A 100 MHz scope is plenty good, but deep memory makes a digital scope look like an analog scope. The GW Inskek MDO series is awesome for this and the Siglent scope seems to be made well enough and has great specs at a low price. Thank you for your great comment!
